This is the best time for you to work out these issues. You have a great base so a couple days off will only make you healthier and stronger. Glad you got to sleep last night!!kaburns1214 - 2013-01-10 7:44 PM jarvy01 - 2013-01-10 1:44 PM Ok, I'm off to sulk. No sulking -- its important to get better. A week off in January isn't going to hurt an A race in August but "pushing through" illness, developing a chronic condition and being seriously ill in April - May - June will. I know. I was just emotionally reacting to the news of the day. I'm much better this morning (emotionally). This month has been very tough for me, and it isn't over yet. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED Swim cap question ... I usually use speedo latex caps. I have tried the silicone, which is like a cap with vasoline on it. The material caps aren't bad, but you get that drag and I don't know if your hair is getting damage more with water constantly going thru it? Are there any caps out there that stay on and don't shimmy up your head and off your ears? I hate the cap not covering my ears. Thoughts on caps? |

I haven't bought a swim cap since I competed in my first triathlon. I just wear my old race caps. I have tons but some are better than others. The race cap from my very first tri is still in rotation and the words haven't faded a bit. Most of them are pretty big but sometimes they shimmy up after a while. I just yank them down between sets. I've never used the material caps. |

Oh and I'd take 7 hours of sleep right now drug induced or not. 2. I only wear caps in races so I'm no help there. 3. 11.5ish miles down this morning. Felt good. Could use a nap though. Reference point 1. |

I coughed until 11 and then got 7 drug induced hours of sleep. It's the first night in a week that I caught a solid block. Yay! I plan to do the same tonight It's supposed to be in the 60s here on Saturday. I'm going to have to fight the urge to take my bike out for a joy ride. The plan is to open the windows and let the fresh air suck out the plague from my house. Any northerners heading outside to celebrate this warm January weekend? It's 50 degrees in Chicago this morning! I rode my bike to work today for the first time since maybe October. It was great -- despite getting caught in the rain and being a bit of a mess when I got to work. I had forgotten how much I miss riding to work. Looking forward to tomorrow too. Feel better this weekend! |

Any northerners heading outside to celebrate this warm January weekend? Glad you're feeling better. I went the homeopathic route and ended up doing good. Codeine for me is the devil. I've had it once in my life when I was 11. I had ten baby teeth pulled because they simply wouldn't fall out and my mouth needed the space to let the permanent ones grow in. I woke up in the middle of the night and was hallucinating, because it's technically a hallucinogen, so I saw a tarantula crawling up my chest and started screaming at the top of my lungs. You can imagine my parents horror at 2-AM. |

Pretty tough group from what I hear. Thanks for all the birthday wishes. Your move is probably lateral at best. Mine really is moving up. I looked at it last year and basically it took me from the top 40% of the age group to top 20%. The 40-44 might not have the burners of some other age groups but the depth is second to none. |

I'm now into day six of a nasty sinus infection that has prevented me from doing any training at all. I'm on antibiotics, but they're not beating it as fast as I'd like. Hopefully by Monday I'll feel well enough to get back in the pool. It drives me bananas when I can't exercise, and that drives my wife and kids bananas, too. Not as bad as Celiac disease/pneumonia/bronchitis to be sure, but I just wanted you to know you're not alone. We just have to tell ourselves we're getting our "sick" out of the way now, and then we'll be free to train for the rest of the spring. Tell you what. I'll send good healing vibes your way and you do that for me. |

Extreme Veteran 490 Higganum, Connecticut | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2013 (Year 3!) - CLOSED This being my first full 140 in July, I have been trying my best to complete each of my scheduled training tasks, only to get a tough cold near the end of December. I thought I kicked it, and did a all out 5k which totally knocked me down for a solid week - missing every scheduled training event for about 9 days. Moral to the story, make sure you are truely over the bug before you wear yourself down and the nasty bugs take over and make it 10 times worse. I've found my "zen" with the cold, and what I missed in training, well, I just missed those and it's done with. I have been getting back into the routine again, which was much more of a challenge than I thought it would have been. Breaking the momentum really stinks, but it's all part of the process - better now than in June. Good luck with the recovery for all those who are sick or injured - do what's right and don't make a rushed decision that could end up costing more time. |

Sitting down with you foot on the floor is going to increase the swelling. If you take care if it would should be able to be back running in 1 -2 weeks. Its definitely worth letting it heal and not pushing it. After 12 sprains in a year I had my ankle surgically reconstructed in 2005 -- as simple as a sprain may seem its not worth messing around with it. |

Nothing that happens in January is going to make a race in the summer or fall but you can do things in January that can break a race in the summer or fall. I've found that the most difficult thing about training is knowing when to back off and when to reset not when to push harder. |
