Blue berries are the easiest of the three. The others require a trellis to support them if you actually want to pick any. Get a couple of different varieties of blueberries early, middle and late fruiting to make sure you extend the season. They like a sunny place, not too wet, not too dry (average soil) and make sure you don't plant them too close together. There is no point in getting dwarf ones unless you are going to put them in a pot. Get regular ones as large as you can afford. they start to bloom and fruit fairly early but small gallon-sized ones will be a couple of years, at least, before you see fruit. If you do raspberries. Make a simple trellis with poles and wires on both sides and plant them about 2 feet apart. You will get fruit the next year. People put nets over them to make sure that birds don't eat all the berries. I don't. It just kills the birds cause the get caught in them and there is always enough fruit for all of us. |
