Scott, I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. Losing any family member is hard, especially one you were so close to.

I missed my workout Friday afternoon because I got stuck at work late. Got in a good one yesterday morning though. My body is extremely sore! Doing another workout at this gym today if my foot is still feeling good (I felt my first inkling of soreness where I broke it yesterday so may need to take it easy). If no gym workout, I will do yoga in my living room to stretch my sore muscles and start tomorrow with a run.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother.

I have been talking to Dave for a while about this but figured it was time to share. My grandmother had to be hospitalized in Jan. I spend everyday with her growing up and even lived with her for a few months after college. That is the reason I cancelled my Dopey race. She is 94 and was not expected to last a week, but being a Sicilian she held on until last night. I had missed my morning workout and left work early to get in my hour bike ride. On the way home my mom called and told me that grandma didn't have long left. I had planned on going to see her the next day and thought I would make it so I went home and got in my ride. I had just made dinner when my mom called and told me that she had passed away.

I was suppose to work today and planned on it. I got up at 0220 to get my run in, and while running decided I needed the day. My workouts for the week are done, although I may do something tomorrow just to clear my head.

It's no excuse but I felt like I owed y'all an explanation as to why I have been so bad at getting on here especially after offering to help Dave with mentoring. I promise I will do better moving forward. My goals for next week are to not miss a planned workout (from iron fit) and to get in 3 stretching sessions.

Scott - real sorry about your grandmother. I sent you an fb message.

Almost forgot to mention - as long as I can grab a spot I'll be doing the Dopey in 2017 as well. A friend has been obsessed with it for years and finally talked me into it. We've got our lodging all set just need to get our spots in the race(s).

Totally off topic- be we're doing a Disneyland trip for spring break- anyone have tips? We've never been. We have three days and are staying at the hotel there for 2 nights. With a 6 yo and probably 5yo niece as well (she lives in LA).

First race of the season done! First AG win of the season in the books!! I repeated as the champ from F35-39 again this year!! Super excited about that, but my performance overall wasn't fantastic. I didn't get home from Vegas until 10pm last night and then I couldn't sleep at all last night. I was really wound up from all the travel and excitement about the race. Race report is up (http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=539473) if anyone is interested.

Now I'm baking my wife a birthday cake (lemon). Again, she graciously allowed me to race on her birthday!

Gretchen:
4run, 3 bike, 3 swim
2 yoga
Set race schedule

Last week I missed one bike, but that was because the hotel fitness center was closed for remodeling, so I had no option. Hit my run and swim goals.

Keep hydrated with alcohol, and have lots of patience. It's magical. LOL Disney with kids is kinda like the Amazing Race.
Good luck. You'll need it.

  • Scott,
I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother. You were so fortunate to have had 94 years with her and it sounds like a close relationship at that. My prayers and condolences to you and your family. Peace.

Okay! End of week showed I hit my workouts except the day my oldest was actively throwing up so I'm feeling good there. I think we all ended up with it to some extent in different ways but I just kept pressing on through it. hahaha.

Yesterday was a mind numbing 1:45 on the trainer - thank God for The 100 on Netflix... (next week will be 2 hours...)
    Today was an hour run.
I rewarded myself with a lovely Switchback tonight and it was tasty.

    This upcoming week shows:
3 runs all at 1 hour each
    3 bikes
    2 swims

I've already had a wrench thrown into Tuesday with a plumber coming in the morning to finally hook up the plumbing in the bathroom to finish that project then I leave to fly at noon. I'm thinking I can squirrel in my run while he's working here and if it doesn't take him too long I'll hit the pool and go right to the airport..... We'll see if I can work that out. If I do, I may have to have a Heady Topper Tuesday night just for the effort... (have 7 sitting in the fridge just waiting to be opened).

    Goals for the week:

    1) actually get in a work out?

    2) 2 runs

    3) 2 rides (including an updated FTP test to kick off a new TR plan)

I'll have to save the celebratory beer to the end of the month, and instead will have fond daydreams of Bavarian lagers and Belgian wheats.

Today's long run lesson. Hydrate before and especially during run.

I never really needed water 4 years ago when I did distances of 9 and under. Now at 38, I felt the effect of lack of water at mile 7 all the way to the finish of 8.2 mile run today. No worries. Lesson learned.

I have my schedule for this year mapped out.
    12K, 25K, and 2 marathons. Maybe I'll find a 50K to do.

I'm going big this week with almost 20 miles ran.

    Goals this week:
    Run 3x
Continue to lose weight by eating healthy and monitoring alcohol consumption

Tomorrow I'm kicking it off with 6.2 mile recovery pace run.
Thursday I'm stepping it up with 4.1 mile interval run. (2) 1:30 intervals per mile at hard to breathe pace.
Saturday I'm pushing it to a 9.25 mile long run at long run pace. Lots of hills.

    Great job, Gretchen!

DQ, it still isn't showing me anything (when I click on the link it asks me to log in and then takes me to the main page again).
I did get my workout in yesterday! I felt good, it was pretty killer. The workouts involve jogging, sprinting, rowing, and lots of strength stuff, so I'm feeling really strong after one week (4 workouts total). I am going on a run this afternoon before my volleyball match (first one since I broke my foot! Super excited!).

    My goals this week:
    Do something active every day
Cook/eat something healthy at home every night and only buy lunch on Friday
Start reading again! Read at least a chapter of a book for fun each day

Too bad you became a county man (although judging solely by your picture you may be a bit too fast to be a running partner, haha). I am right by Patterson Park, just south of Baltimore Street. How do you like Middle River? I go out there on occasion to go to Kohl's. Yoga was awesome last night, especially since walking down stairs was really difficult all day. This morning I did another HIIT workout at my gym and already felt so much better than the one on Monday! Hoping to get a run in tomorrow.

We know that Kohl's well.  :-/   Middle River is a nice area - it's just taking some adjustment to not be able walk everywhere, especially to enjoy those frosty beverages our mentor group is famous for.

I was just a couple of blocks from you - just south of the Park on Rose Street.  And that picture is from three years ago LOL it's from the Druid Hill Park Triathlon up near the zoo.

I still swim at the Merritt and my daughter goes to school down there, so we're in town a bunch still.

Very cool! I teach swim lessons at the Merritt! I bet we've seen each other before. Good old Smaltimore. I hear you on not being able to walk places. I know someday I'm probably going to have to leave the city, but can't even imagine! How old is your daughter? Is she your only child?

My only child daughter is 13 and swims for the Merritt team in Canton, usually it's Lindsey or Devon coaching, but sometimes Rob fills in.  Too funny.

    Last week's numbers:

    2 swims, ~ 2500 meters
    6 rides, TSS = 250+
    1 run, ~ 1 mile
    1.5 hours of ST

I'm dealing with some pain in my right lower leg - making it tough to run.  If it doesn't resolve itself with some rest then off to the doctor.  BOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Goals this week are to just build on last week - just keep at it.
