That is a monster hill in my area, kind of a legend in the biking community. It took me 6 minutes at 6mph to go up it, and 1 minute at 38mph to come back down. And I did it on my first 50 miler! I attached the link to the bke route, just click on the Elevation Graph tab to see the mountain. You can't miss it!!! Yes, thankfully that hill is on the HIM course, not the Olympic. I'm sure my husband will want to attempt it sometime that weekend - crazy. I'll be happy to take his picture when he falls off (he he he). Did you see the photos of the people falling over BACKWARDS because the hill is so steep! Nuts! |

Pro 4100 Wherever the trail takes me, WA. | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL HELLO!!!! HELLO!!!!! I AM BACK IN THE HOUSE... Only for 4 days until I take off for another 13 days on Friday.... It is good to see everyone is doing well... Good job to all on Races, Good Job to Trac on her big bike ride, and if I missed anything sorry.... There is a lot on this thread to read through and so little time.... Baowolf.... To add a little to your question about training for a 1/2 Iron and the distance..... The only thing that you really "TRAIN" for is brick workouts... You will see that many times after your long bike ride it is asked that you run 20-30 minutes (just to develop MUSCLE MEMORY for your running muscles!).... I don't ever do a full ironman just to train for an ironman... This was a huge fear one my first ironman.... The longest workout I had was 9 hours... I knew that my race was going to take SEVERAL MORE HOURS than that, and I feared how my body would handle that..... It is all muscle memory.... HOPE THIS HELPS AT ALL?!! My training last week was very LACK LUSTER! On a ship w/ 1/2 hour spinning class everyday, running on a treadmill w/ the waves throwing you side to side (not too bad, but you could feel it!), or running on a track w/ the boat, and against the boat (depending on which side you were running!!)..... It scares me how little I worked out 3 weeks before my race, but I also understand that this was FAMILY TIME and not about my race (I am not racing to win, or racing to improve from 2 years ago... I am just going out and doing what I love!)..... So it was all about the family, wine, and R&R! It was great.... http://picasaweb.google.com/swbkrun/MexicanCruise If ever interested in doing a Ironman, here is a neat little graph thingy that someone sent me last week.... http://www.nasports.com/compare/comparebike.php ITAN don't look at it until after our race next week!!! |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Great pictures Steve. Looks like you had a great time. The first couple of pictures looked like Cabo San Lucas on the Baja pennisula. Looked at the elevation chart you had posted. I think I might have to o to Florida when I get ready to do one even though Lake Placid is closer. I had a good swim this morning after taking a couple of days off. Dr told me to take it a little easier for a few days so I only did 1400 m instead of the 1600 my plan called for. Will do a short run tonight. Edited by Redknight 2008-08-11 2:21 PM |

Well an update on my side. had my first run close to 5 weeks today with zero pain in the a$$, I mean knee, felt great and it has reassured me that I will be able to race this week. Not going to the best run ever but as long as I finish that is all that matters now. NO my only question is what to eat/drink during the race, I am thinking of some gels in T1 and Gatorade and H2O in during the bike? what are everyone's thoughts. Oh ya it is an Oly that I am doing. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL The Oly I just did was not bad, temp was cool in am and rose to about 85 F by the end of the run. I did half a banana before the swim, full banana and 20-24 oz on the bike (half water half gatoraid) (25 miles) and hit 2-3 of those 4 oz ish water/gator aids on the run. I don't know if that is typical or recomended, but I didn't wall or anything and felt good throughout the race. It was my first Oly so am totaly interested in what others have to say as well. "SOME GELS" I don't think you need gel (s) right away... I usually (this is my 2 cents) like to wait about 10-15 minutes to let my belly and HR settle down after the swim.... When I am on the bike I will start taking this stuff.... I tend to dial it WAY back approaching the last couple miles of the bike to let the belly settle in AGAIN, and get ready for the run.... Hope this helps! |

I am probably not eating enough on my longer bike rides then. I am probably only doing 90 to 150 cal per hour on the bike and similar on the run. |

Expert 1231 B'ham | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL I think I'm in trouble for my race this weekend. Today was the first day I felt like I could really breathe since getting sick last Tuesday so I decided to go for a swim and it felt like my first time (not that first time, get your mind out of the gutter Tracy!). Between that, not running very well - likely a product of the breathing issue. I have asthma, so whenever I get a cold it has to go through my lungs before I'm "over" it. I'll also have been out of town for 8 of 9 nights before the race, working long hours. Needless to say I haven't been eating very healthy or sleeping enough. So my new goal for the race is not to improve over my first race, nor just to finish, but to NOT DIE! |

Although I haven't tried the dying thing. Once you get into the race you should be OK. Listen to your body. It will tell you if you are pushing too hard or if you can go a little harder. Don't forget that it is OK to walk a little on the run if you have to. Just don't stop swimming on the swim portion or that dying thing may kick in. Good luck. I will be partying this weekend at my daughter's wedding. It is going to be a great time. Headaches for everyone!!!!!!!!! Then off for a weeks vacation and finally a weeks woth of training before my next tri. I am so gonna pay on that one for having a good couple of weeks. Edited by Redknight 2008-08-12 6:35 AM |

Search the forums for calorie calculator, can't remember which thread it is in but it's there somewhere. What your stomach can handle is up to you, everyone is different. Try out some different nutrition and if it works, stick with it. Personally I couldn't handle gatorade on long rides/runs, I like to stick with water and maybe a gel. |

Cadmus, don't worry about it.... You don't actually lose too much fitness in a week or 2 rest, and anything you do lose you get back pretty dang quickly!!! I think that you will be more than ok, and I think that you are going to do AWESOME! |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: swbkrun's group - FULL Hello everyone, Where to begin....Perry, glad to hear you are feeling good. Matt, sad to hear you are feeling bad. Rob, sounds like you are feeling no pain at all. (better living through chemistry) Mark is still in Texas swimming post glory. Baowolf is counting calories. Steve is loosing his sea legs. And Tony is sporting a very cool new helmet. What a busy group. I have just been kind of maintaining. My legs feel good after all my bike riding this weekend. And I was feeling pretty good about my little hill until Steve showed us all what he and Igo will be tackling with the IMCanada Still choking on my humble pie. I placed an order for new running shoes. After the last 3 runs my feet hurt more and more, so I guessed it was time. I bought a new pair of biking shorts and they are a smaller size! Understand for a girl anything in a smaller size is a good thing - unless it's bra sizes - oops sorry TMI - anyway.... So after surviving my guy riding groups' jokes and whistles about "less spandex" I am finally feeling as comfortable as possible riding. I do have one question... how come my endurance in swimming is getting better, but my sprint time doesn't seem to be? In my swim this afternoon I timed my 100 yards and it still is around 2 minutes!! Yet I can bang out 1000 yards and not be tired at all. I thought that with endurance came speed, but I guess not for me. This isn't a big deal for my olympic, but I would like to see the results for my Sprint races. Is this happening to anyone else? Any advise on where to go with this?
