Some of you probably know my distaste in swimming. Sad...looking at my logs, pretty low numbers, and 80% of it is from triathlons.

I have one more triathlon coming up, and will do a quick swim on Wednesday with my tri club, then the real work begins.

I was just notified by a local triathlon coach that I won FREE SWIMMING for TRIATHLETES lessons for a month. HOW cool is that?! PERFECT timing too because I have to start swimming in June and get my butt in gear for my long course triathlon.

The downside (yes there is) is it starts at 5:30am. ugh, but I know in the end it'll totally be worth it and hopefully by the end of the month I will start to like swimming again and perhaps sub 2:00 swims.   I'm so looking forward to this!

DJ I felt the same about swimming as you until I took the swim lessons now (since I can't swim) I miss it when I can't! Congrats on the free lessons!

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Recovery is going ok I guess, pain killers help. The doctor told me there was some arthritis which is concerning. Enough that he considered not repairing the cartilage, but he felt i was in good shape and he knew my goals so he felt it was worth continueing. I did get out for an easy walk with my wife this morning. How is everyone else doing?

Glucosomine/condrotin.   That spelling is way off but you know what I mean.  Really works for Kathy and me.  I started using it about 67 years ago when my fingers were all gnarly and now I could play the piano if I knew how.

Hang in there.  Injuries suck.  But we get better and do better.

Glad to see you out and about Ken! Sometimes going to the events and cheering can be just as fun. I think one of the most fun times at a race I had was working a corner a kids tri! I'm friends with the RD that runs Lifetime Fitness tris. He convince me to take a day off training and come out. It rained and was cold the whole day, but we had sooooo much fun!!!

Did a couple of 35 mile loops today in this HEAT! We go from wind to heat! Always something I guess. Perfect days are rare. Had a smokin fast solo ride on the first loop. But the heat was getting to me on the second!

Today I went out on an unintentional 53 mile bike ride.   I was prepared to go to Goldfinger's (Bar and Grill), but lately doing 20+ milers was getting a little bit boring, and wanted to add more miles. So I decided to hook up with some of my friends prior to the ride and ride to the start at Goldfinger's. They're FAST, and I pushed it a bit at the start, which kind of threw me off because it was at 5:30am, and I wasn't prepared for the speed. 17.5mph for 12 miles. I'll take it! :-)

The 28 miler was easy easy Zone 1. Windy and very cool. While I didn't like the wind, I enjoyed the cool weather. Had to use Arm warmers.  Then rode back to my car.

In the past, doing 50 miles was daunting to me, and felt like it's way too long of a ride...now? No problem!

Wow! What a great weekend!! Got a ton accomplished. Had another big 70 mile bike, enjoyable 8 mile run. A couple of tough but nice to be back in the outdoor pool swims, and another great 6 mile run with my wife. Had my parents out for dinner and went out to breakfast with my wife after our rude on Sunday. Weather was a little hot but that's all I can complain about! Storms are starting to roll in now, but it's back to work tomorrow anyway.

I have 2 more weeks of heavy volume till we leave for Vegas! then its a nice vacation. I don't think my wife wants to ride out there this time though so I think I'm going to take a morning and go to the local Lifetime fitness out there and get in a swim and a spin class. After that it's off to the grand canyon for a few days!

Thanks to all the veterans out there that gave us the freedoms to make all this possible!

This weekend was a total bust for me, training-wise. I have fallen int to this wierd pattern of terrible recovery weeks after building volume. It usually starts as soon as i take a day off, which i did on Thursday. Then Friday morning i thought i pulled my groin swimming, then realized it was just the terrible, random pain i get when my body starts recovering.

This blew my mind the first time it happened because the pains jump around quickly, one minute in my left hamstring, a minute later in my right calf, etc. It crossed my mind that it could have been some sort of blood poisoning since it hurt like hell and this is new to me, till i learned this happens to others and it passes. So, a 2 mile bike ride, ending in treeible pains in the quads on Saturday, 1.5 minutes running yesterday, up to 7 minutes running today, then hobbled back. How's that for volume? A whopping 18 minutes of training in a long weekend...

I'll try again tomorrow with an easy trainer ride, this way if its a bust, i'm not stranded somewhere before work.

Wow Bill! At first I thought it may be just like a taper pain thing, but this sounds pretty extreme for that. That might be something to talk to a doctor about. Sorry man!

Wait a minute Bill.......are you sure you're recovered from your race yet? Sometimes those things can take a lot longer than expected. Especially for new athletes. I remember not being right for at least a month and a half after my first marathon. Had pains and cramps when I started trying to get back in a routine. Maybe you just need to slow it down and just do some easy workouts for a while.

Back from a long weekend trip to the Kenai Peninsula - not much training only an 1 1/2 hour hike with kids on Saturday as the weather was pretty crappy.  We did get to do an all day wildlife cruise on Friday and saw.... otters, bald eagles, Dahl's Porpoises, mountain goats, Puffins, Humpback Whales, Harbor Seals, Stellar Sea Lions (endangered) and wait for it.... ORCAS! Definately got the $ worth! Back to training tomorrow.

Ken - I hope you are feeling ok after surgery and that you heal quickly!

Vacation is over and now back to reality and back to training.  Glad to hear to your surgery went well Ken.  I hope you have a speedy recovery and can make it to IMFL.  I stayed at Disney until Thursday after Florida 70.3 and then on a Disney cruise until Sunday.  So I've done zero training since the race.  I also realized that I've been fooling myself in thinking that it was ok to miss a few runs in my training.  The last month of my training my runs were not treated with near the importance of my bike or swim and it more than showed.  If I don't really start working hard on my run, I could be in trouble for IMFL.  The last thing I want is a DNF because I was dragging my butt on my running.  I've got a couple more weeks before my IMFL training plan starts so I'm just going to keep up my Master's swims, steady on the bike and focus on my run.

You guys have all been kicking azz. You seem to be awful hard on yourselves after big events. Don't be afraid to chill for a bit and dial it back to recover....awesome work I am inspired. I lost ten pounds of sweat into my vest yesterday. Training?

You guys are doing awesome and I'm jealous.

I'm 1 week into the major cramming sessions for my CFA certification with 1 week to go.  I cannot wait until this is over and I can get back to training.  Pass or fail, I'm pretty confident in saying that my academic career is over after Saturday.  There's 2 more levels of this test, but I don't think I want to try them.

I just realized that the mental fatigue is so different from physical.  I am sleeping like a rock after these long study sessions - much more soundly than after a long run or something.  I don't move all night and I'm sleeping through the baby crying.

I'm a little disappointed in myself because I wanted to keep my diet clean during this time of no training, but I slipped.  My wife made a key lime cheesecake, and, quite frankly, if cheesecake is wrong, I don't want to be right - at least for the occasions that my wife makes ones.

I did get up for a run on Saturday and Holy Moly, it's gotten hot out there.  I'm sure I'm dragging a little from the layoff, but goodness, the heat zapped me.  I'm definitely going to have to start doing some stuff in the morning.  Honestly, I've wanted to get up a few times last week to go for a run, but the aforementioned  heavy sleeping has kept me in.

One week to go and then back to real life and training.

If it makes you feel better Russ, I've been in this business a long time now.  The CFA, while still a HUGE accomplishment and pretty prestigous mark on your resume, means less now than it ever has.  Lets be honest, all these people are supposed to be smarter than smart.  Than why was it a bunch of CFA's at Lehman/Bear Sterns/etc. that allowed the financial crisis to go as far as it did?   Why did those that did not cause it see it coming?  Credibility was lost there.  Why do they create products allowing people that should buy homes to buyt them, and then try to dump those products on the market to other CFA's?  Although, I'm a bit bitter.  I remember sitting, outgunned, in a room of CFA's back on '07 while I was covering some homebuilder stocks in a hedge fund.  I told them this was going to happen.  They said I was CRAZY!!  If you don't NEED the CFA, it really is silly to put yourself through it.  Do your best, it's all you can do man!   I did it while I was doing my MBA.  The classes I took counted toward the MBA, so I took it for the heck of it.  Wouldn't do it otherwise, especially now.  Don't tell my friend the President of the CFA institute I said that though!

Funny you should say that.......

I was just thinking how great I thought it was going to be to jump start my tri-season by doing a marathon in May.

Unfortunately it took more out of me than I think I want to admit...........My knee is still not 100% and those aches and pains you mention well yeah I have those too.

Like I told Ken before I'm going to hit the bike for some easy rides starting tomorrow and try for a late week run. I also dusted off my wetsuit.
