Asalzwed - 2012-08-11 2:29 AM and speaking of, I just got off the phone with my mom. There are getting the house ready for the annual shooting party (as in guns.)  Ahhhh, my parents.

Speaking of being on the phone with your mom ... you cleaned your phone yet?

Yikes. Nope. Another day of butt juice on my face.

Ah! I dropped my sunglesses in the toilet the other day, too!!! I didn't tell anyone though so SHHHHHHHHH

I'd call you a train wreck, although it's only day 1 of Hobbit Maid's vacation and you should see what the place looks like. And I haven't even been doing any training, or anything at all except lying around.

So, at least we are both train wrecks. That's cool, I'm alright with it.

Are you watching the men's vaulting!?!??!

Of course!

I gotta hand it to the German athletes--hottest by far, as a country, this year. I think it's because the German men (not to mention the women ... uh oh I'mna be in trouble now IT'S OKAY I'M GERMAN I CLAIM ETHNIC RIGHT TO MAKE FUN OF 'EM) finally learned to shave their armpits.

Watching heats of men's 4x100 now.

I was going to comment, that German vaulter was pretty hunky. I'll also agree for the most part, with your comment about the Germans. With a last name like mine I pretty much have to.

I have been constantly amazed at how good the Olympics coverage here has been, especially since we weren't supposed to get any at all!

They're doing a great job of toggling between women's hammer, men's pole vault, and men's 4x100 heats.

Another super-yummy German dude! Never mind makeup in a tri ... ALL the deca guys really did look like they stepped off GQ covers, and a good number of the pole vaulters are the same.

I had something else important to say, but I keep getting distracted here.

Oh yeah ... those sprinters ... holy crap, I can't BIKE that fast. Well, downhill or off a cliff, maybe.

Chris reminded me to reply to this.  Here goes

cdban66 - 2012-08-08 9:16 PM OK, I have reread the race report at least three times and I have a few questions for Janyne about Vineman. And please keep in mind I am a short course newb, so long course stuff is foreign to me. 1) Food - It seems to me that this is/was a very important part of your race. How many total calories do you think you took in?

On the bike: 4 Clif bars + 2 Fig Netwons + 1 cereal bar + 1 Clif gel = 1620.  That works out to 250 per hour.   At least as important, I had seven bottles of water.  This is good.  I can do about 20 oz per hour comfortably and my ride was 6.5 hours.

On the run, no idea.  They had Clif Shot Bloks on the course.  I knew that and I trained with Bloks (at little) and their gel (more so).  The gels did not sound good at all.  Maybe I should have started with a gel and gone with that the first hour.  I dunno.  I ended up taking 1-2 bloks every other mile.  That works out to maybe 500 calories or a little more.  Hmm.  Sounds like a lot.  Didn't feel like a lot though.  I'll have to give that some more thought.

2) It looked like you were able to eat afterward. Is that an acquired skill? I find I can't eat after a sprint, I can't imagine eating after an IM.

Uh.  I could not eat the burger.  I felt like I had to eat and drink something for recovery.  The fruit went down really well.  The cookie looked disgusting.  The chicken soup went down well and I went back for more.  So I had some fresh fruit and chicken noodle soup and a bottle of water.  I had a PB&J before bed because I felt that I needed to eat something for recovery.  I also drank about a liter or more of water.

3) I may have misread, but how did you enter T2? Did you slide your feet out of the shoes and leave them clipped in? Or was it complete removal? Any reason why?

I wear regular bike shoes, not tri shoes.  I just unclipped and got off the bike.  For 112 miles, I want to wear the most comfortable shoes that I own.  If I wanted to shave time off of T2, I would have started running and stopped at the first empty port-a-pot instead of waiting in line for the one there ;-

I did. But I'm madly in love with the winner, and have been since last week when I posted about him in the Crushes thread.

Another amazing thing about the Olympic coverage here is that they showed both the men's and women's triathlons and 10K swims.

Snerk

Cockiness/arrogance in people doesn't bother me if a) they have the goods to back it up, and b) it's not at the expense of others (e.g., "I'm so awesome" if you really are is fine, "I'm awesome, unlike that loser," not so much).

I think I see it more as confidence, and in Bolt, also playfulness/fun.

It ususally does bother me. But yeah, I think the playfullness totally offsets it. Never take yourself too seriously, even if you are the fastest human in the world.

I don't know that I agree with his claim of being the greatest athlete to live though. I think he should give decathlon a shot then he can make that claim Wink

Well, that claim would go under clause a). He does have the goods to back it up, although that wouldn't exclude a whole bunch of other athletes who would also qualify under similar justifications.

OK, so I am comparing the BT HIM plan to the Fink plan as some of you had mentioned.  I have some questions for those of you that used the (modified) fink plan for HIM.

I see that the HIM race is in week 22. Did you follow the plan as such for 22 weeks?

I don't see much of a taper for the HIM.  Did you do more of a taper?

I remember some of you said you thought the FINK plan was light in some areas.  Which were those? I see the run "only" gets up to 1:45.

Thanks for the guidance for this HIM newb...

I like him. I met him. I trained his mom's dogs before she passed away.

I thought it was really funny that her last name was West and she owned ... Westies. (West Highland White Terrier).

I don't really know what he's said in the popular press (I guess I've heard some things but didn't really pay attention), but he was really great back when it was his week to be an American Idol mentor (two seasons ago).

Funny enough he's another exception to my rule. His personality is pretty annoying and I saw one of his shows in Seattle a while back where he changed outfits each song (and one of his "changes" took an hour and a half!) which was pretty lame. But dammmnit I think he's a genius musically.

A TRAINING QUESTION?!

I've never followed any plan "as such" Tongue out

Whether one should follow all 22 weeks depends on what kind of a base you're starting out with and for how long you've been at that level (or how long it took you to get there).

It doesn't really include a taper, and to be honest you don't need much of one for a HIM, especially for the swim, somewhat for the bike, more so for the run. Taper's actually one of those things best decided as one gets closer to the date depending on the actual training one's done.

Fink plan is definitely light on swimming and I really do not like the way he structures his suggested swim workouts.

The running is just fine to get you through the HIM run, and the length of the longest run isn't really relevant. In fact, I'm considering never going over 2:00 or so even for the IM marathon.

Yes. He's been on antibiotics all week, but I think he is good to go now. We practiced transitions last night and I emphasized that this is supposed to be fun.
