Nice TM run, Brian. I hate the TM ... no way I could stay on that long.

Had a pretty good first week back from my Giardia induced break. Missed a run and a swim, but I'm please to have returned to active training.

Swim: 2 hours
Bike: 4.5 hours
Run: 3 hours
Total: 9.5

Heading out for 15 on the road (running) in a bit ... legs are feeling yesterday's ride/run, so they'll be easy miles.

Glad you're feeling better! Nothing wrong with nice easy miles, gives you a chance to enjoy the day and the joy of running.

Same here, that 100k brevet ride out of Westfield MA started at 21F. Most of me was fine, except for the toes - ouch. I realize that a black water bottle top works better than white on days like today. There was just enough sun to keep the black top one from plugging up with ice, but the white one froze and nothing would flow. The Perform worked well, one bottle for 65 miles, then a 30 min T run after.

Wow good for you guys getting out on the bike today!! Brr it was cold here today 12 and the wind was crazy! I ran 12 miles.

Yesterday my 3hr trainer ride was interrupted by my furnace blowing up, which was kind of crazy. All is ok after coughing up some $$ but I only got 90 mins in on trainer.

Anyone else have huge sinus problems with the pool?? I am stuffed up and all allergyish for 2-3 days after swimming in pool. I swim in the lake all summer, no prob. Not sure what to do it gets pretty bad - watery eyes, sneezing, drooling, stuffed up nose. It's a great time haha. Just wanted to see if anyone else had that problem.

For the week:

S 1:15

B 5:30

R 3:15

T 10:00

Happy with the week.  Didn't get outside for the long bike ride, but hit all the workouts I wanted (2 S, 3 R and 3 B) and am not hurting too much.  Enjoying the journey, and can't wait to get outside on the bike again to see how the trainer time is paying off.

Great job everyone on keeping up the training!  Just keep moving, just keep moving...

Since I spend 99% of my time in this thread I'll post it here too.  But I posted it in COJ as well...

Friday night about 8:30 our 8yr old lab started acting REALLY strange and the side of his stomach was pushed WAY out.

Drove him to the local animal ER to find out his stomach had turned and they weren't going to be able to use a tube to fix it....it was going to require surgery.  We had about an hour to decide what to do.  Unfortunately, with our financial situation we weren't able to afford the $2,800 surgery to fix the problem and had to lay him to rest. He was gone by 10:30....it all happened so very fast.

Gut wrenching to know that the problem was fixable but just out of our means financially.  He used to sleep in the bedroom of our 6 yr old son every night so he's not handling this very well.

Buried him with some of his favorite toys near the river where he LOVED to play.

It was a rough weekend on all fronts.  Had a 4hr trainer ride that gave me a lot of time to think(which is bad) but he used to lay next to me while I rode.  And then swimming this morning was sobering because he used to LOVE to swim.  Found myself a couple times getting caught up in the thoughts and not paying attention to the workout.

You're my boy Blu.

Jeff - my sincere condolences - really, really sorry to read that. It is crazy how attached we get to those little buggers.

Anatole France is often credited with saying, "Unless one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." Your grieving is a clear indication that you have Blu to thank for your fully awakened soul. Peace.

I am so so sorry. I know how hard it is to lose your best friend.

In 2011 I had to put my best friend Bailey down - he and i were inseperable his entire life. i took him to work, school, everywhere with me. he was like my breath, part of me. He was 10 and had cancer and we didnt know until one day he just suddenly went blind...in the end we had to say goodbye. It was the single hardest thing I have ever had to do. He is in my profile btw.

His memories will come at you in big emotional waves, then the waves get a little smaller...you will always miss him but at some point thoughts of him will make you smile instead of cry (sometimes..i still cry though)

I'm thinking of you and your family and I am so sorry for your loss.

Mine really just started this fall. I would sneeze like crazy after getting out. I had a pool mate recommend NasalCrom to me, and it has worked very well. A few sprays in each nostril before getting into the pool and the sneezing went away.

Crazy respect to those of you riding outdoors in the great north!!  I'll be on the trainer for another 3 or 4 weeks. I'm not a fan of cold weather riding. I'll run outside all year long, but I enjoy feeling the warm breeze on my bike. Additionally, we're getting dumped on with another storm up here later tonight. The roads are going to suck again for a few days.

Jeff ...

Ugh, dogs were put onto this earth to steal our hearts and them break them. It's never easy. Especially when it's so sudden as you've described. Just ugh. My screen name refers to the fact that I've been involved with St. Bernard rescue for some time ... we see a lot of dogs come and go and it always sucks.

I tend to find that I have pretty bad sinus problems as well after I return to the pull from some time off.  Usually after ~1 month of structured swimming, my nose seems to adapt somewhat (symptoms only last for the remainder of the day instead of a couple days).  I haven't found a way around this yet, and mainly just live with sniffling all day at work

Condolences here too, that is one of the hardest things to do, especially if you're not expecting it. Pets are family, no doubt about it.

My chlorine sensitivity is not terrible, but it has gotten worse as I have gotten older, but it is still manageable. Just a little sporadic sneezing throughout the day. I have found that it is worse where they regularly shock the sh*t out of the pool (YMCAs, LTF, city pools, etc) but usually OK in university pools, dedicated competition pools, etc. I suppose many of those are more precisely regulated. Saline pools and OWS are divine. I do have a good friend whose chlorine sensitivity can be down-right debilitating. Although it worked, he never really liked using a nose clip (found it to be really uncomfortable for long pool swims) but he found that a small dive mask (which covers the nose) to be a game-changer for pool swimming. OF COURSE we make fun of him when he uses it, but that is what friends are for, right?

Edited to add that he does not use it for OWS or races - he just uses it for pool swimming in chlorine pools.

BernardDogs, I am going to recommend he try NasalCrom if he hasn't already.

Jeff, I'm sorry to hear about your loss.  To some people, it seems odd to talk about the loss of a pet as though they are family, but to a pet owner, it makes complete sense.  I dread the day that my kids have to deal with the loss of our dog.  The sense of loss is heart-breaking, and the speed at which you lost Blu must be so hard for your family to understand.

Jeff...sorry to hear about your loss. Putting our Britney down a year and a half ago was heart breaking.
Took a brief break in traing to run a 25km trail race Saturday. Managed an unofficial top 5 since we ended up taking a wrong turn (I think) and finishing just ahead of the winners. A good run no less...would have been nice if the course had been marked!
Back to the grind this week...planning a big bike week next week! Happy training folks...

Very sorry to hear about your dog.  Ironically I noticed the vision in my 11 year old Husky's one good eye is starting to go while I was throwing him some of my post run french fries just before reading the forum today.   He has probably run with me for about 4000 miles in his life and has been a great training partner when the weather is cold.  I hope he still has a few left in him but hearing your story makes me take stock and appreciate what we've had.

So sorry to hear this.  I have a couple 17 y.o. cats (brothers) that are getting there, too, and I cannot imagine what it will be like without them.  Pets offer such wonderful companionship... it will get better.

Thanks everyone.  He's looking over water now, so he's good.

Recovery week for me next week, looking forward to it.  Feeling a little burned out at the moment and I still have my long workouts of the week to go.

2600 in the pool this morning and a 12 mile interval run tonight.

Training is a great diversion. Imagine how hard life would be if we didn't have this crazy sport to keep us occupied.

Man, that is a long interval run. What are you doing, one mile intervals? I never got above 8 miles doing 800m intervals.

Below zero with the wind chill on the second day of spring.  This week last year it was in the 70's.  I am so ready to get out of the pain cave and on to the roads.  Hope somewhere in the country people are having good weather.

Blech. Indulge my rant. It's been an unproductive week (the pool has been good). Between shoveling out of the storm and other pop-up scheduling conflicts, my training hours are taking a hit. It's making me cranky.

Hopefully I'll get some time on the trainer tonight after a post-work meeting. I've got two work shops to facilitate this weekend as well, so I'll need to get creative with my long workouts.

Does anybody know how I can get a charity bid for this event? If not it's gonna be the Ironman in Zurich Switzerland. So it's either Maryland to New York or Maryland to Switzerland... For financial reasons I'm hoping there's some way for it to be option #1 but I'm not sure how to get an entry at this point. Thanks!
