Rene-congrats on the win! Good job.....it would be "interesting" to run a 5k without knowing pace.

Mike-nice job on the race.

Suzy-you are way tougher than I am! Wow. Can't imagine running that far in those temps. Well done.

Good day here. Got bike and run in early. Wife and I went out for lunch followed by a trip to the movies to see "Monuments Men". It was pretty good. I had read an article on the subject matter a couple of years ago and my wife had read a book on the stealing of art during WWII and the efforts to recover it. Good cast. I'll give it 6.5-7 out of 10. Tomorrow is 75 minute bike. Weather looks great with temps in the mid 60s tomorrow afternoon.

Nice races Mike and Rene! Well done. Suzy great run, running when it is that cold saps the energy right out of you. Did my 1st snow shoe run today, quite a good workout. Finally starting to feel less fatigued. It's amazing how much a marathon takes out of you. I've been pretty conservative the last two weeks, I figured it was a good time to heal up for the long season ahead.
The Mrs. dropped a jar of Tiger Balm on the bathroom scale this a.m. shattering the scale. (I'm not lying, I swear!). Not so sure why we had a glass scale. I'll try my best to get it replaced by Monday.(he he).
As far as gear goes I did like many others and started with the basics and I'm now starting the upgrades.

Swim: Zogg Predator goggles. Kwami jammers. Xterra Vortex full wetsuit. (Current negotiations for a new one are going quite well). I also use a SafeSwimmer float for open water.

Bike: Specialized Sequoia road bike. No idea what year it is and I'm pretty sure the frame is made of lead.

Shoes: I do have a pair of Hoka's I wear occasionally. Other than that it's all Brooks Adrenaline GTS. I've probably had 7 or 8 pairs. They all look the same. There is a rotation. Race/good road condition pair, sloppy weather/back-up pair, trail running pair, everyday beaters, and yard work pair. I am subject to a bit of ridicule around here for buying the exact same shoe all the time. In fact when the Hokas showed up it was, "Can't be for Dad, their not blue and white Brooks," "UPS must have got lost". Yada yada yada. At least you people understand.

Watch: Garmin 910XT.

Couple of pair of bike shoes, Oakley sunglasses, body glide, butt butter, etc..

Rene -- Very cool -- OA Female Masters win! Of course, once you turn pro, you can never go back...

Mike -- Nice job on the 5K, especially under those conditons! Anything colder than 30 degrees is Arctic weather in my book.

Suzy -- Holy Cow! Twenty-one miles at -13F! That's off the charts amazing!

Jason -- The "Imelda Marcos of Triathlon."

Nancy -- Glad your leg is doing better. Welcome back to the game again!

Randee-I have used just about every between the aerobars hydration setup. Bought and tried all of the new ones that came out last year. Will try to put together a review over the weekend. The biggest problem I have with most of the set ups is being able to easily see my Garmin 500 with any of the hydration systems. I've been meaning to pull them out and evaluate which I may use in the upcoming season.

Randee and Randy -- Here's my Torpedo setup with mounted Garmin Edge. The angle is perfect -- I don't have to move my head at all to see the numbers on the Garmin. Just make sure the rubber bands are in good shape! I partially wrap the bottle in duct tape to keep it from flying out on bumps. To improve the aesthetics,  I'm going to try some sandpaper tape instead of duct tape. I'm also going to use some black rubber bands.

PS - The straw is on the other side and is held down with velcro. You don't have to move your head to get water. Easy refill on the top cap -- just slide the retractable top with your thumb.

Hmmm, let's see.

1 Giant Roadie and 1 Giant Mountain Bike. Not sure what they're called, but they're definitely entry level bikes. I still haven't decided how far I want to take this. I still consider myself a newbie!

1 pair of Mavic MTB bike shoes, and a pair of Shimano roadies. I use the same MTB pedals for both bikes because I don't use the road bike very often, and I'm accustomed to locking in on both sides of the pedals.

Speedo swim gear from head to toe. I use men's swim shorts because they cover more in the back and are comfortable. It confuses the men I swim with, LOL!

I have a Nikeplus watch. I went Garmin 210, but I had such issues with it that I went back to Nikeplus because I was too disappointed to give another one a try.

No wetsuit! I haven't needed one.

I run in Brooks Adrenalines because they love me.

Had a fun ride on Saturday through the hills. Revisited the dreadful Grass Wall on the MTB. I thought my face was going to explode, and we had an audience of hikers cheering us on that didn't allow for dismounting, hahaha!

My youngest has been sick, so missed the sprint triathlon I had registered for this morning. My husband had his Air Guard drill weekend, so no one to tag off with. That's life!

Happy new week! I've asked the boss to shorten my work day by 1.5 hours so I can get my swimming in. Just until Xterra passes. with husband training for the same full I'm doing, I've lost the afternoon sun for any of it. Next week is going to kick butt and I look forward to it.

Congratulations to you, Rene, on your win. Cash money, yo! Raining cheese!

Suzy, holy snowman! You are built of strong things. Inspiring run, my friend.

Oh, a couple shots of the last "fun" 8.2 mile trail race. The 1st is of "Grass Wall" which was the start and finish of this race, and is the last hill of the bike portion in the Xterra Guam. The next one is me having no control on a descent, lol!

it comes flying out on bumps if you don't tape it? That's not good

Well I've spent the last 12 hours giving in to admitting I had a corrupt windows file and reformatting my hard drive. So far, everything is moving along swimmingly (pun intended) and Carbonite is currently restoring my data - FYI WORTH THE MONEY!!!

It's already 2:30 and I'm thinking about taking the day off from training - because I've seen what's on tap for the coming week! LOL

Ok, hope all is well.

Blanda - neat pics!!

I was woken from deep sleep by a terrible dream...... I was trying to finish off an IM but my legs would not run! In my dream I kept trying to run over and over and over but they just wouldn't turn over. I woke up in a cold sweat.

Nobody else was up and I had a run scheduled so I just headed downstairs and pounded out my hour run on the treadmill. I'm happy to report that my legs did actually work. Whew!

Steve-interesting set up. What do you hook the rubber bands to on the Garmin. Not sure where I would do that on the 500.

For what its worth I like my Torhans set up. I also have the "accessory tray" that connects to the back. The Garmin mounts solidly there but I have to look down and away from the road to check my power.

On Slowtwitch they recently did an Aero Camp and tested several set ups. Seems the Torhans came out best but needed to be back right at the head tube to get the most aero benefit.

Between the aerobar systems I've tried

I tried the Xlab Torpedo system (400 or 100) and it seems to be a decent set up. But, the part that extends out where you mount the Garmin seems a little flimsy and bounces around on rough roads. The bottle also can obscure the line of sight to the Garmin. Biggest pain was trying to get it set up with the spacers to mount the bottle cage to the base. There are alot of parts to the set up. The spacers allow you to mount the bottle cage higher or lower between the aerobars. Seems like they could simplify this better. Easy to drink out of and holds the straw down out of the wind.

XLAB Torpedo System 400

Profile Design HC System-Really easy set up and easy to drink out of. Problem is the mount for the Garmin is behind the bottle so again have to look down and away from the road to check power. I messed around with it to see if I could put the compute mount out fron tbut was unable to do it. This would be a good set up it you are not checking your Garmin regularly.

Speedfil A2/Z4 bundle-this looked really promising. So simple putting the mount for the Garmin right on top of the bottle as part of the bottle cage. I used this in one late season race with the Speedfil A2 bottle. You can mount the bottle cage so that the straw for the bottle come out the front or the back. No problem seeing the Garmin but I had trouble getting fluids out of the bottle. The straw does tuck into the side of the set up so it is not sitting up in the wind all the time but I struggle with the bite valve. Also seems that the straw can crimp depending on the angle. This would be a super easy set up if you just want to use a regular water bottle and pull it out for a drink when needed.

Speedfil A2 | Z4+ Bundle

Torhans 30 with accessory tray-as started above, my only complaint with this system is the location of the tray behind the bottle. I like the easy setup of the bottle and the ease of drinking with the straw right there. Also easy to refill.

 Torhans Aero Tray

I'm still undecided what I will use heading into next year. Toward the end of last season, in sprints, I was just using a bottle on the frame and keeping my usual Sram Garmin mount on the aerobars to keep it easy to see. May have given up a little aerodynamically but I felt more comfortable with the Garmin out front.  The Nathan AP Pro looks like a promising alternative but I have not been able to determine whether you can mount a Garmin to the top of the bottle.

It looks like you should be able to mount a Garmin on there but the website refers to the yellow thing going around to the top as a deck clip where you can mount an inspirational quote or other notes.......really?

I would check the DC Rainmaker site. He does lots of awesome reviews and I'm sure he is way more detailed than I am.

Hey Randy would the bar fly mount help any of your garmin issues with the bottles?

http://www.barflybike.com/barflytt/

I can see this being an issue for training but I don't think that's going to bother me as much. But I guess time will tell because I haven't even thrown a leg over my TT bike yet

Thanks Randee-that is what I currently use on my tri bike. Works really well. Problem is putting a between the aerobars set up on and still having room for the Garmin/Barfly or being able to see the Garmin. Its a great product on the tri bike. I use a similar Sram product on my road bike.

Completed my personal triathlon today. Hit all of the targets easily and felt really good doing the workouts. Best part of the day was consuming a very large amount of food afterwards. Good thing there isn't any beer in the house.

Randy- thanks for the pics and write up on the aero bottles. I'm trying to decide which system to go with for this year.

Randee, sorry to hear about your computer issues. What a PITA to deal with over the weekend.

Jason- that sounds like a horrible dream. That new easy pace Coach has you running must have traumatized you more than you thought.

Blanda- I can't imagine running and riding where you live. It is so beautiful but also very challenging. wow.

Randy, I attach the standard black plastic handlebar mount to the bottom of the Garmin. I then wrap a rubber band around the right front clip of the mount and another band around the right rear clip. Both bands then wrap under the bottom of the bottle and attach to the front and rear left clips on the other side of the mount. I think the handlebar mount fits both the 500 and 800. I can post another picture if it helps...

Thanks for the nice reviews of the various systems -- very helpful.

ok here's another question Randy (and others).....people keep talking about mounting their 910. Do you stop and take it off your wrist from the swim and then put it back on to the run? **confused**

In my races, I've just kept my watch on my wrist. I usually don't need constant updates, so I just check it occasionally to see my HR, or how long I've biked. I've seen others just have it already on their bike when they get out of the water.

I used to always wear my Garmin for the entire race. But after what happened a few years ago, I now put it on in T1.

At IMFL 12 , someone ripped my watch off during the swim. My Garmin now lives at the bottom of the Gulf.  I was able to use the computer to monitor watts during the bike. Not having a watch on the run really sucked. Luckily my coach had trained me to run a specific pace and my body went into auto pilot during the marathon.

Ok, I need some training advice. First, the good news: I'm better at swimming, running, and biking than I was going into the offseason. Obviously, I'm happy about that. However, my A-Race this season is IMChoo at the very end of September, with IMRaleigh 70.3 coming up in June. Here's the downside: I trained last year with Be Iron Fit, and liked the Competitive Program. However, I started that training plan in January at Week 1. Week 1is way behind what I feel I can do now, but looking at the plan, it looks like I'd be comfortable jumping in at Week 20, which would only leave 10 weeks left in the plan. So, what should I do? Ideally, I'd hire a coach and tailor a plan, but I can't afford that. I could start Week 20, and just double up a lot of weeks. Or, I can just keep kind of winging it until I get about 10 weeks out from the race and jump in. Does anyone have thoughts and/or input?

Steve-thanks. As I looked at the various set ups today I realized that the handlebar mount is secured with rubber bands in several of the systems.

Randee-I wear my Garmin 310xt throughout the race. I will have my Garmin 500 mounted on the bike. I'll start the 310xt when I start my swim but I won't look at it on the bike...I'll use the 500 while on the bike. Then on the run I'll use the 310xt for pacing and keeping track of my overall time.

Did a little more research on the Nathan AP Pro and apparently there is no mount for a Garmin on the product. Can't believe that a company would develop a product these days and not incorporate a mount for electronics.

I'll throw in some of my gear as well.

Swim - Nada; I'll deal with that going into mid to late April

Bike - 2013 Fuji Roubaix 1.0LE with Forte Campus Pedals (no shoes as of yet). Performance Elite Jersey and shorts

Run - Nike Air Pegasus 30 iD.

Tri - N/A, will deal with towards the beginning of Summer

In other news, Icepocalypse (the long lost brother of Snowpoclaypse Jr that visited two weeks ago) is on the way to North and Central Georgia as I type this. First visit in over twenty years.

So, it's beginning to look like the entire week is gonna be a flop since I have no trainer or treadmill in my apartment. However, I'm not going to waste it if I can avoid it! Even if I can't run or bike, I'll do something that'll help me do both!

sounds like they ALL have electronic issues. So putting that aside, which water system do you like the best? Sounds like the profile installed backwards is pretty good but the Torpedo is better once you get past the install PITA. Is that fair to say?

It must have been the night for weird tri dreams.  I was in Russia doing an IM and realized I forgot the velcro straps for my front mount bottle so had to settle for a 16oz fizzy Evian for my only cage.  With that solved I went to jump on my bike only to realize I had forgotten to put the cranks on so had no pedals!

I totally forgot to weigh in since it isn't something that I normally do. The good news is I made it an entire week with no artificial sweeteners and didn't have to jump from a 10 story building to get on my favorite jeans!

FUNNY!  Sometimes, I wake up and realize I have had weird dreams but can rarely remember much about them.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
