I think it's great, a good way to work on the nutrition while riding.  Is it a well supported ride?  I'm probably doing my first century in early May.

It will be fun. Rides are more low key with folks of all abilities. They have stops with food, drinks and bathrooms.

You probably could do one this weekend and be fine with your bike training.

But given you might want to be more prepared work on a longer ride each week, ideally building up to 50-60 K the week before. Just add 15-30' riding to your long ride weekly.

Key for longer rides is pacing & taking in fluids and calories.

Cat- your post sounded like you were just going to ride for celebration rather than in an organized event. It should be fun just make sure you plan your route in a way that lets you have access to food, fluids and a bathroom.  You might also do a figure eight ride where the center is home base in case you want to adjust your ride length.  I do this with my runs alot- even if I am going for 9 miles I am never more than a mile or 2 from home by a more direct route.  I am guessing you will be riding with friends?

Question: I just started using a HRM recently and have been getting a sense of what my limits and avgs look like on the bike and run, but haven't been very scientific about it or been using it to set specific training goals... what's the best way to calculate your zones and how are you typically using that in your training?

i was thinking abou this on the bike this morning - the i did find Mike Ricci article but as a chick i wanted something 'female' based and i happened upon this example which just happens to fit my specs almost perfectly for the Karvonen method:

I would say build up to it. Start at 40k and increase 20k each week, or something like that. I found that adding 20k a week to a long ride wasnt that bad.

Looking at your training, you had a killer bike week about a month ago, but nothing super long and you don't put distance so I don't know how fast you ride.

I think you probably need to work up your time in the saddle. Aim for 2-3, 1hour long bike, sessions during the week then a long ride on the weekend. And work the long ride up. It is super easy, as long as you do it gradual, much much much easier than increasing your long run.

Thanks, Lisa and Judi for the articles!  And, Judi, I think I found the other one you were talking about.  Just reading the beginning of those, it makes much more sense to me now about setting ranges.   Seeing the women's numbers being a lot closer to what my readings are is reassuring, whereas before they were waaaay off with the age calculations I'd seen before.  Also a very good point, Judi: I know my #s are a little higher since I'm off BP meds (recent round disagreed with my body quite a bit, so I'm currently unmedicated and being careful about really high-intensity stuff) and I'll need to revisit my numbers once I start on em again in a few weeks.

So, water challenge is today, eh?  I've been drinking black tea all morning... that doesn't count, does it

The water challenge couldn't come at a better time. One of my friends works for a company the distributes spring water. She gave me a bunch of water and asked me to give them a try. So far it tastes like water but is in a pretty blue green bottle so it's that much better.

Well 2 ginormous cups of coffee don't really count as water   But I'm already over a  liter of the regular ice water.  Usually hang around 2 L per day anyway.  (yes, you read that correctly)

Off for another glass of water. I have this thing, I hardly drink at all during the day at work. Then I get home, I am parched, and I drink a ton. Not the best way to go about it I guess.

Support? Ummm well I guess it depends on what I can stuff in my car or behind bushes

Ive been looking for a supported ride for ages but there arent that many social events that dont require travelling for... and only a few I would consider doing... no centuries...

Maybe if I ride loops I can bribe/'convince' a few friends to join me for some of it... I dont know anyone else who would be up for riding 100K at this stage!

Thanks Kathy - that makes me feel better - the weekend before my race i did one ride of just over 50K and one of just under on consecutive days so I guess the distance should be ok if I keep my ride volume up (rain rain go away!!!)

At this stage riding mostly solo as I dont have any friends who would be able to do close to the distance... well except for the two boys... one would probably join me for some of it... the other who put the idea in my head last night didnt volunteer...

Thanks for the tips... yeah the last couple of weeks have been different because of the weather and racing but sounds off my volume from a couple of weeks ago it should be doable... then...

Longest ride is around the 50k mark so theoretically it sounds more than doable....

I normally get in 1.5-2L during the workday plus what I take in during a workout... usually around 0.75L unless Im doing 2 a days or long sessions which makes it more....

Can you keep a jug or water bottle at your desk/with you during the work day? I find that works much better for me in terms of keeping hydrated than a glass... as I have much more water on hand and just sip at it throughout the day with minimal fuss...
