Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bib 2704 Duane Rice M 50 - 54 (last year) 5 weeks from this weekend - YOW! I haven't had that many long runs. Couple of 2 hour runs, two 2 1/2 hour runs and scheduled for my first 3 hour this weekend. Probably have two more 2 1/2 - 3 hour runs left - not sure. So I should end up with two 18 mile runs. I'm not too worried as I've been running 4 days a week with speed work and you guys know better than I, this isn't your typical marathon. This year it has been all about the bike. My goal was to get a lot stronger on the bile so I could set up my run. I didn't want to struggle through the bike and be beat at the start of the run. We'll see. I've had countless (fast) 75 mile rides on our favorite loop, 2 rides over 100 miles then a 6 hour ride this weekend. Not sure what is on tap following this week but I doubt she is going to make it easy. I need to trust my coach - she has helped a lot of other folks finish their Ironman races. My goal is to get to the start line HEALTHY! Just modified my reservations. I am arriving Wednesday night and leaving Sunday afternoon. Wish I could get there early enough to register on Wednesday but I doubt that will happen since registration is only open until 4pm. enjoy, Duane Edited by Duanerice 2011-09-29 10:03 AM |

It doesn't seem that long ago when we signed up. I was nervous, scared, and excited.......now with 5 weeks remaining I'm nervous, scared, and excited, lol. It is amazing the progress a person can make when they set a goal and work a full year towards that goal. I have absolutely enjoyed the training much more than I ever thought I would. I am really looking forward to race day, but I have really taken to heart the saying, "It's about the journey". I, too, was concerned about the bike. I have completed 4-100 milers. I'm hoping to get a 120 in a couple weeks. It may not be necessary from a physical standpoint, but I think it will help me mentally. My longest runs have been 13-14 miles but I feel better trained than I did for the marathon I ran a couple years ago because I have really increased my run frequency. I still plan on getting 1 or 2 15 milers and an 18 miler. Seeing the bib numbers just reinforced in my mind how close we are to race day. |

Focus on what you are supposed to be doing right now....what is your pacing based on HR, RPE or pace, focus on that. When is it time to drink next, take in some nutrition. Focusing on now helps mentally. If you had an issue before let that go and focus on now. You can't control past or future only now so doing that can help you. Race day is easier than training days as you are supported, cheered for, catered to, are treated like a rockstar.....enjoy the experience and don't let fear or doubts take the joy out of the day. |

As stated above, running is much harder on your body than swimming or biking. Therefore, most training plans max you out short of the race distance because it is a commonly accepted principle if you can run 18 you can run 26.2. It becomes a mental challenge because physically you are capable of reaching the finish line. |

Besides, I can't compare this to a stand alone marathon. I have no idea how I'll feel. But I'm thinking that by the time I get to mile 18 of the marathon I am going to start getting a little excited! enjoy, Duane |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() You are 100% correct, I am just a little worry about the low mileage on my training plan, but if that worked for everybody else it should work for me. Thanks for the advise |

At that point you're just running/walking/gallumphing until you see the finish line. |

I'm 606 and oldest women I found has 706 which means I'm one of the oldest 100 women doing FL...somehow that seems kind of cool. It is cool! And you pointed out something that makes this race unique...a MUCH MUCH smaller number of women! This race is a sausage fest! Worked for me...I got to watch a bunch of HAWT dudes pass me on the bike.
Man what motivation!! That will keep me going with all those guys going by me!! |

Member ![]() | ![]() 498 Anne Carroll W45-49. I have been following you guys all summer. I'm in South Florida so it is still summer and extremely HOT here. Florida is my first IM (only 4th triathlon) so I have been trying to soak up all the info I can. You all have been a wealth of info. Thanks so much!! Except for some bruised ribs from a bike fall last week, training has been right on. For the most part I'm following Gale Bernhardt's 26 week ironman plan. I definitely feel it has set me up to finish the race, but these next three weekends are key for building my confidence. And more importantly, reminding me to pace smart!!!! Thanks again and hope everyone's final tough weeks of training are fabulous. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi guys, One of my training mates and IMFL hopefuls broke his scapula over the weekend after a nasty fall off the bike. 5 weeks out from the race!!!!!!!. Anyone have any experience with this type of injuries and also do you know if there are any exceptions from the "no refund after 15th of sept" rule in cases like this. Thanks in advance for your replies. |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Frank Levy Bib number 2032- 40-44 age group. Very excited to see a number and it feels very close. I am curious about packing or clothing lists for Panama City. I read some of the previous race reports and it looks like I need to plan for cold and warm weather. Any information would be helpful and appreciated. Looking forward to seeing you all in 5 weeks. I will be at the back of the back trying to smile and enjoy the day.

Not sure how it will feel in a marathon in an Ironman race,,but a stand alone 26.2 - if you have run 18 miles say about 4 times,,and your 10 to 12 mile runs have been strong,,just think at that point that you are in one of your strong 10 miles runs. Same would be if you had been doing some 20's and you get to that 20 mile mark, just remember how many time you ran a 10k and just stay focused.
So much is mental at that point. Keep the body in auto pilot mode as your mind enjoys the ride... |
