Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() He is adorable! Some of our kids are really lobbying to get a new dog and another group wants a cat. Just tonight we were on line looking at some new puppies..considering a Goldendoodle or Labradoodle. Our youngest is such a dog kid. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Today was a 2+ hr ride and 30 miles. I struggled with 30 mph winds the whole ride and I got dropped from my group ride, which isn't uncommon. I don't really care because I don't want to hold anyone up and they are just on a different level than me. I know the route and just want to get some saddle time in. I guess it was good to get some training in on a very cold and windy day (cold for PHX - 52 degrees). I know a lot of people that did IMAZ this year struggled because it was cold, windy and rainy and people expected nice weather. I hope the HIM I'm doing in April has nice weather but you never know. I don't really have any cold weather riding gear so I just had my bike shorts on with my bike jersey and a North Face APEX jacket on over that. I was a little cold but warmed up a little as the ride went on. I just wish I had some more money to get some better clothes but I just don't right now. We're going to be poor for the next 5-6 months until my wife gets a paid admin position at her school district. My work has cut all overtime so a huge chunk of my pay went away. I did get some with the Tucson shooting though. Hope everyone had a great weekend of training. I did get to watch some of the football games today and that was nice. Very cute puppy Kathleen and we've ordered up awesome weather for you this year at IMAZ. I guarantee it. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred Doucette - 2011-01-24 7:10 AM Just finished a challenging swim. 3,000 yards with alternating sub-threshold intervals. (James I rested more than 20 sec after the long ones) I think the cold weather is making people at my YMCA cranky as there was some curious locker room passive aggressive stuff going on. There are no claimed lockers at my Y, yet people seem to want to have the same locker and will crowd in on arrival regardless of who's there ![]() Training today? Our local YMCA is insanely busy this time of year, which leads to all kinds of interesting scarcity-related behavior. The most interesting is usually around the cardio equipment and in the pool. The silliest part is that the local Y has purchased a lot of radio advertising time to get people to join, but they already lack space/equipment for the current members. We're hoping their secret plan is to bring in enough funds to build a new branch. Training wise ... Busy day at work, but I'm hoping to get in a swim sometime today/tonight. Have a good Monday everyone. |

I have noticed improvements in your swim times. Very well done. Descending swim ladders are great to way to build speed and endurance. They can be tough but that’s point. Training for me today is; Kettlebells and a CT ride tonight. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As of yesterday (and planning to continue today), I have my longest streak of working out at least once (s/b/r) per day ever, 27 days. I just beat my streak of 26 days from Dec 09-jan 10 (it must be something to do with the New Year and deciding that it's now or never to get serious). I have another streak I found in my logs of 29 days, but that was strung together by a day of stregth training only, so I don't think it's valid. Once I noticed (rather someone pointed out in an inspire) that my Jan was perfect, it's been incentive to keep the streak alive once or twice when I may not have otherwise. Motivation can come from the weirdest places sometimes. I'm sure someone here can beat that though, anyone? |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been going to the Downtown YMCA in Mobile for 20+ years-ususally at lunch. Its Senior Bowl week here in Mobile so lots of NFL personnel and coaches in town. Most stay downtown and use the Y. You never know who you will see working out or on the cardio equipment. I'm not a huge NFL guy but there are always a couple of faces I recognize..There were several years when Jimmy Johnson was still coaching that you would see him running/waddling on a run through downtown. In general I dont think most of the recognizable coaches do much fitness training during the season given how they look during Senior Bowl week Lunch time swim (not at the Y as they have an 18 yard pool) for me and some yoga tonight. "Leg rest" day for me. Randy |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kathy-I know you are well along into the Finding Freestyle program and I am also doing the program although just beginning the 4th week. Curious to what you attribute your recent breakthroughs in the pool. The program does not advocate any particular style, type of kick or even stroke speed so I was curious what you have "found" that has allowed your recent progress. I have not done any time trials to test my speed but do feel that I have better body rotation on my stroke since starting the program-not sure that will equate to increased speed but I'm only 3 weeks in. Hopefully, I will see improvement as well. Randy Edited by slornow 2011-01-24 10:01 AM |

Driving Kevin to the airport and then will do FTP intervals on the CT later. Coldest day in MA in 5 years...when we drove the kids to school it was -6. Randy, I'll give you some thoughts about why FF is helping me get faster when back from airport. |

Hopefully, I will see improvement as well. Randy Randy, FF explores various ends of swim technique from F&P which is Australian crawl keeping arms going all the time keeping them opposite of each other using your core to move your arms to the other end of spectrum SoL which is similar to kicking on your side doing 6 kicks and 1 pull. From there we explore various types of kicking which is something I've never worked on previously. I posted videos and questions when I started working through the program. SoL is hard for me as I didn't kick much at all and F&P I moved my shoulders to much and needed to learn to engage my core to move my arms. Through various drills and some guidance from the coaches I've learned some areas I need to work on...kicking and faster turn over. Prior to FF I swam catch up like with minimal kicking. The coaches encouraged me to try various changes to technique to see what was fastest knowing that might change over time. Every week or two I'll try and swim the fastest I can doing 25s with slight changes then started doing 50s to see what helps. Both faster turn over gains me speed as does more kicking. It is hard for me to do either very long. When I have to think I can do one or the other not both. Finally kicking with proper timing comes naturally to me after doing lots of pulse kicking (either 6 pulls and then 6 swims with choice of kicking or something like that could be 2 beat kicking for 6 strokes and then choice kicking for 6 strokes...also tried 8 swim/4 pulse as pulse kicking keeps my kick timing spot on). So this weekend I focused on faster turn over doing what I call modified Float & Paddle using my core to turn over my arms faster and my kick naturally goes to pulse kicking. So over last 9 weeks I've been able to coordinate doing the two things that help me swim faster. My husband got a video of my PB 50 and the coach pointed out I really probably did 49" not 50 and that last 5-7 yards I really faded. He thinks I have 47" in me soon. If you follow the forums you can see a thread called "Free Your Mind and Your Body will Follow" that will help explain it more. Hope this makes some sense.... |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kathy-thanks for the thoughts on your recent swim breakthrough and Finding Freestyle. When I did timed 100's last week I focused on quicker stroke turnover. My ususal easy swim has me at 14-15 strokes per length/25 scypretty slow turnover. Downside of quicker turnover was that I was quicker to fatigue. Will need to find the balance between speed and effort level. As always how this translates to OWS is a whole different conversation. Thanks Randy |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Everyone - looks as if last week wound up on high note for everyone (except that 12 mile TM run, Fred - ugh) and the new week is off to a fine start. Kathy - congratulations on the swim breakthrough and Kathleen, Casey looks like a real sweetie - I am sure you are so anxious to get him home. We lost a pet a several months ago and I still catch myself looking for her all the time around the house. It is remarkable how those little critters can work themselves into your life. Rene - awesome finish at the Rocket Run - congratulations. I ran my first 5k in three months this weekend and had pretty good results myself - it was a reasonable sized race (1400 finishers) and I placed 3rd in my AG. It was pretty funny - I finished over a minute faster than my last one, but with an average HR 15 BPM lower. The entire race felt like I was running at a pretty easy pace, but at the same time I could not find that next gear that leads to the entrance of the "Pain Cave." It was kind of a weird and unusual feeling. Work is officially full-on for the next three weeks - but I do get a chance to read everyone's posts as they stream in via email. Due to the fact that email notifications come in with all the HTML coding in place, my favorite thus far is when Kathy posted: "Coldest day in MA in 5 years...when we drove the kids to school it was -6. <br /> <br />" I could literally see the shivers at the end... Easy swim for me tonight, hopefully the pool is a little less crowded than last week - even though it is not a YMCA, the competition pool here on campus also gets packed this time of year. I figure the "Resolutionists" will fall off the wagon within the next couple of weeks, but until then I just figure the crowded, inconsiderate lanes are good practice for Mirror Lake. ![]() Edited by TankBoy 2011-01-24 4:54 PM |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Fred Doucette - 2011-01-24 6:14 PM Good evening team ![]() Well I had a nice swim and run today. Tomorrow is some short high-intensity bike intervals. On Wednesday I have a scheduled off day. Joe you were discussing off days above. I do feel as though I need occassional off days to allow me to recover truthfully a day of low intensity, shorter training is pretty close to an off day and for some people that works better. *My* experience has been that most triathletes simply should not train every single day as it leads to burn out and injury. Also it can hold you back from performance gains as your body is never allowed to recover. Depends on the individual and their level of fitness, but Wed. will be my 2nd off day for the month of January. I had no intention of trying to work out every day, it just sort of happened. And the couple times I did something because of it, I was just being lazy. I'm not afraid to take days off when I need, I just hadn't felt that I needed one. I think that means I wasn't going too "big" in any workout/day, so I was never drained the next day (I think thats a good thing). It's also means I'm working on time management a little better to find the time every day (generally life forces a day off for me before my body does). |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tasr - 2011-01-21 9:28 PM GoFaster - 2011-01-21 9:02 AM New question(s) - sorry, I'm full of these. What type of training volumes have each of you used in the past at the HIM level - and found to be successful? I know this is a personal question, but I'm trying to get some thoughts on what approaches people have found worked, or at the opposite end, not worked. I would think that distances as opposed to time makes the most sense because we are all faster or slower than one another. Second part - how much intensity vs LSD would you say worked for each of you? i.e. If you're going out for a 3 hour ride, do you find that you're doing this at 85% race pace, race pace, even slower, faster? I realize that different workouts will be at different intensities, but overall how would you rank the efforts. Basically trying to undertsand what everyone has used, and liked / didn't like. And how long did you find you wanted to train specifically for an HIM distance? (I know this is asking a lot, I'll shutup now). ![]() I'll try to answer and just imo what I do more or less. 1st Question: I normally do three weeks of build then a week recovery with less or equal to the first week. I mix it up hard and easy efforts listening to my body. I’ve done well with this and if any thing maybe to easy overall as not to get injured. If it’s a HIM example long bike is 10-15% longer than the distance and so forth. So total hours a week are a choice thing and I fit it in as needed as I comfortably can do. Don’t be afraid to take a rest day. I am a bit locked in training and if sleep and recovery is going well I take very few rest days when I am going at it. I hope that made sense. Going back to my BIO for this group; “My training is very unorthodox but is working very well for me. I use no coach, follow no set plan except the one in my head projected about 2 weeks out. I see the goal and know what I need to get there. I train primarily with Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) with heart rate (HR) as a limiter. In the winter I ride a Computrainer using power.” 2nd Question: How much intensity? That a great question and imo widely debated. I like a dangerous old school of thought “No Pain NO Gain”. I like intensity but you can’t go all out all the time imo. A great way to get intensity is intervals. They can be in the middle of a 120 mile 10000ft bike ride if want. Mix it up with on and off days as long as your body is recovered or some what recovered. Swim hard easy run, easy bike hard run, easy and easy, hard and hard kind of like that. This is why plan are done to map it out. To sum it up what I do works for me. I don’t complicate my workout but make them challenging, fun and interesting. Point and goals; need to increase fitness, endurance without injury. Hope you can draw from a crazy old triathlete what you can. ![]() Thanks James - I think I like this old school way of looking at things. I'm finding that intervals are a good thing, but easy is good as well. A 3 week build with 1 week less/easier makes sense to me, and is in line with what I've seen in the past. I know everyone is physiologically different, but as a semi-cookie cutter approach it seems to fit with what I believe my body can handle, and how I think it will make gains. That said, I'm following the FIRST HM training plan, and it has a fair bit of intensity in it, which I haven't had in my running for a while. The body seems to be starting to adapt, but I'll be paying close attention and won't be too concerned if I need to dial things back a little bit. I need to remind myself (as Fred has pointed out) that a planned rest day can be a good thing, and I think we need to be willing to ditch the plan or mileage goal on occasion and just get some rest. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I kind of disappeared for a couple of days and came back to being 4 pages behind! Looks like everyone has had some great training and nice job with the PB's and races. Kudo's to Fred for 12 miles on the treadmill - I simply do not have the mental fortitude to manage that and I know it. Yesterday was -20C and I did a 12km run at lunch, this, in my opinion, was way easier mentally than trying to force feed a long run on a treadmill. (It really didn't feel that cold once I got going). Swim for me at lunch, and then 4x10min intervals at 95-100% CP on the trainer tonight. It's the kiss of death week for the cycling program, cause I've got another 2x20min at 90-95% on Friday. I usually try to hit the upper target on these, but am willing to dial it down just a bit if I'm not feeling strong enough. |
