Question for the group.  I'm having a really hard time getting a good feel for the warm-up on my runs lately.  Heart rate really seems to soar (over 160 at times) even at a slow jog.  Once I get about two miles in I can hold HR at MAF at a pretty good pace. Is this a normal part of this training?  I don't feel like this was happening before I started using MAF, but then I wasn't using my HR monitor as much.

Sometimes there could be a misreading on the HR monitor at the beginning of the run - resulting in a spiked (and false) HR measurement. I had it once (where my HR shoot up to 160+ and drop after about a mile).

I know Chris had a few issues with this, and he solved them by using a gel. I personally wet (lick would be a better description) the HR pods before putting them on. I'm sure Chris or Ernesto can give you more info on the subject.

I have heard that it might also be caused by static electricity, especially from wearing compression-type shirts while layering, but not sure if this is the case.

Pretty sure this isn't the HR monitor misreading cause it actually feels to me like my heart is beating that fast.  I usually put the monitor on a good 10-15 mins before starting warm-up just because I'm curious to see where my HR is during the day and I get what I think are pretty accurate readings.  (Resting HR is in the low 50's and daily activity is usually in the low 70's)

If I rabbit at the start of my run (and I usually rabbit at the start of my run), my heart rate will spike during the first half mile. I attached the graph to my run from yesterday. In the beginning I shot as high as 166, then it came back down as I paced better.

Wet the sensors on the HR strap and that will eliminate the problem. Also, slow down for the first mile or two to let the body loosen up.

I found that the gel helped a little, but not always, especially when it was very cold. But I do think it is technological error, not in reality a high heart rate for two reasons: 1) It didn't feel to me like my heart was racing and 2) If I just adjusted the heart strap, my heart rate usually fell twenty bpm.

Overall, I just stopped worrying about it. For the first mile, I just ignored my heart rate.

I always wet the sensors.  Warm up pace is prolly about 11-12 min/ mile.  Any slower and I'll be walking the first couple of miles.  I'll try slowing it down some more though.Undecided

I'm a big believer of the gel....I just hope I never mix up the electrostatic gel and my hair gelCool.  Not sure there is a difference.  The biggest plus on the gel is I used to run the HR strap under water...that water was always cold.  Nothing like a cold wet strap around your chest first thing in the morning.

PSA - those in the challenge - please remember to periodically check your totals to ensure you aren't missing a workout or overcounting one.  Thanks!

3500 in the pool this afternoon in 53 minutes, felt pretty good.  I did a whole bunch of 100 yard repeats at about 1:15-1:20 with 30 seconds rest, those are tiring!  Taking the day off running to give the blisters a break, but hopefully heading out with the group for a ride tonight.

- Jim, congrats on the bike breakthrough, good to see your progress

- Andy, great swim! Either you or Rachel could do the swim for me in my upcoming IM Smile

- Ernesto, what is the Crit race?

Today is mother's day in Guatemala (always the 10th of May), so it has been crazy running around between work and workouts to make a special breakfast with my daughters for my wife, lunch with my mom and later on dinner with my wife.  I also finally got a sports massage today and even though I wouldn't call it pleasant, it was not as painful as I thought it was going to be.

Today a 9 mile, 80 min run + 35 min indoor bike

Brick after work.  Windy for the bike home. Took a longer route for a few extra miles.  Really tired out my legs.  Pretty slow run off the bike. Big swim tomorrow

Sounds very interesting Ernesto...  I see lots of groups riding here on base, I can't imagine racing like that (at least not yet).  Today I'll head to the pool for a quick swim the the dreadmill after.  Today is in the 40's and although the wind isn't to bad, sun is nowhere to be seen.  I have to be at the track by noon.  Today I work/officiate the discus in the Mountain West Championship.  Scott will be working the horizontal jumps.  I'll hope to post my workouts before I head to the field but if not I will update tonight.

30 min swim - 100 yrd intervals. Been lowering the time of the 100 intervals from every 3:00, to 2:45 and now to 2:30. Will keep it there for now, but happy with the progress.

YAY!  I was able to get in both planned workouts in this morning!  Swam 30 minutes really focusing on technique and building endurance.  30 minute run on the dreadmill since I was already at the gym.  HR always much higher in there, and I forgot my ipod so I just had the sounds on the machines...

Please recall the rules of the May Challenge that you may count only one workout per discipline per day.  If you run in two separate workouts (morning / evening) you only get credit for one workout.  If you swim, bike and run you get three workouts.  Swim, Bike, Run in the morning and Swim, Bike, Run in the evening - still only three workouts.  Thanks.

Sound very cool. 24.8 mph+ avg speed? I cannot ride 24.8 mph going downhill Mt. Everest, and being boxed out at those speeds must be a rush/panic attack/HR rising experience. Wonder what will happen if you show up for the next one with aerobars, a 1 piece IM logoed trisuit, and a swim cap (you know, to practice your T1).
