Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bdenehy - 2012-05-28 8:50 PM This weekend was a total bust for me, training-wise. I have fallen int to this wierd pattern of terrible recovery weeks after building volume. It usually starts as soon as i take a day off, which i did on Thursday. Then Friday morning i thought i pulled my groin swimming, then realized it was just the terrible, random pain i get when my body starts recovering. This blew my mind the first time it happened because the pains jump around quickly, one minute in my left hamstring, a minute later in my right calf, etc. It crossed my mind that it could have been some sort of blood poisoning since it hurt like hell and this is new to me, till i learned this happens to others and it passes. So, a 2 mile bike ride, ending in treeible pains in the quads on Saturday, 1.5 minutes running yesterday, up to 7 minutes running today, then hobbled back. How's that for volume? A whopping 18 minutes of training in a long weekend... I'll try again tomorrow with an easy trainer ride, this way if its a bust, i'm not stranded somewhere before work. I'm with Brian on this one Bill, something doesn't seem quite right. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() robingray_260 - 2012-05-28 9:18 PM Back from a long weekend trip to the Kenai Peninsula - not much training only an 1 1/2 hour hike with kids on Saturday as the weather was pretty crappy. We did get to do an all day wildlife cruise on Friday and saw.... otters, bald eagles, Dahl's Porpoises, mountain goats, Puffins, Humpback Whales, Harbor Seals, Stellar Sea Lions (endangered) and wait for it.... ORCAS! Definately got the $ worth! Back to training tomorrow. Ken - I hope you are feeling ok after surgery and that you heal quickly! Thanks Robin! Sounds like you had a great trip outside of the weather! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wesley12 - 2012-05-28 11:18 PM Vacation is over and now back to reality and back to training. Glad to hear to your surgery went well Ken. I hope you have a speedy recovery and can make it to IMFL. I stayed at Disney until Thursday after Florida 70.3 and then on a Disney cruise until Sunday. So I've done zero training since the race. I also realized that I've been fooling myself in thinking that it was ok to miss a few runs in my training. The last month of my training my runs were not treated with near the importance of my bike or swim and it more than showed. If I don't really start working hard on my run, I could be in trouble for IMFL. The last thing I want is a DNF because I was dragging my butt on my running. I've got a couple more weeks before my IMFL training plan starts so I'm just going to keep up my Master's swims, steady on the bike and focus on my run. Welcome back, and I am glad you had a good vacation. Probably what the doctor ordered as far as recovering appropriately. One of the toughest thing for self coached athlete is taking a plan and adapting it in a way that fits our life and knowing how to adapt when it doesn't fit. Especially if there is one discipline that we tend to enjoy doing or avoid doing. Ideally, we hit all of our workouts as written, but real life means we miss one every now and then. you just need to make sure you don't always miss a run. That said, in IM the key to a good run is a great bike. By great bike I mean going into the race well trained and knowing the appropriate effort and executing. What plan are you using for IMFL? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() gator22 - 2012-05-29 7:51 AM You guys have all been kicking azz. You seem to be awful hard on yourselves after big events. Don't be afraid to chill for a bit and dial it back to recover....awesome work I am inspired. I lost ten pounds of sweat into my vest yesterday. Training? That had to be a sweat fest yesterday! Good advice on the chilling and dialing back for some recovery! |

I'm 1 week into the major cramming sessions for my CFA certification with 1 week to go. I cannot wait until this is over and I can get back to training. Pass or fail, I'm pretty confident in saying that my academic career is over after Saturday. There's 2 more levels of this test, but I don't think I want to try them. I just realized that the mental fatigue is so different from physical. I am sleeping like a rock after these long study sessions - much more soundly than after a long run or something. I don't move all night and I'm sleeping through the baby crying. I'm a little disappointed in myself because I wanted to keep my diet clean during this time of no training, but I slipped. My wife made a key lime cheesecake, and, quite frankly, if cheesecake is wrong, I don't want to be right - at least for the occasions that my wife makes ones. I did get up for a run on Saturday and Holy Moly, it's gotten hot out there. I'm sure I'm dragging a little from the layoff, but goodness, the heat zapped me. I'm definitely going to have to start doing some stuff in the morning. Honestly, I've wanted to get up a few times last week to go for a run, but the aforementioned heavy sleeping has kept me in. One week to go and then back to real life and training.
If it makes you feel better Russ, I've been in this business a long time now. The CFA, while still a HUGE accomplishment and pretty prestigous mark on your resume, means less now than it ever has. Lets be honest, all these people are supposed to be smarter than smart. Than why was it a bunch of CFA's at Lehman/Bear Sterns/etc. that allowed the financial crisis to go as far as it did? Why did those that did not cause it see it coming? Credibility was lost there. Why do they create products allowing people that should buy homes to buyt them, and then try to dump those products on the market to other CFA's? Although, I'm a bit bitter. I remember sitting, outgunned, in a room of CFA's back on '07 while I was covering some homebuilder stocks in a hedge fund. I told them this was going to happen. They said I was CRAZY!! If you don't NEED the CFA, it really is silly to put yourself through it. Do your best, it's all you can do man! Next time you see a bubble in the market about to burst, don't forget an e-mail to your old friend Ken! |

Sometimes those things can take a lot longer than expected. Especially for new athletes. I remember not being right for at least a month and a half after my first marathon. Had pains and cramps when I started trying to get back in a routine. Maybe you just need to slow it down and just do some easy workouts for a while.
Funny you should say that....... I was just thinking how great I thought it was going to be to jump start my tri-season by doing a marathon in May. Unfortunately it took more out of me than I think I want to admit...........My knee is still not 100% and those aches and pains you mention well yeah I have those too. Like I told Ken before I'm going to hit the bike for some easy rides starting tomorrow and try for a late week run. I also dusted off my wetsuit. If your weather has been as warm as ours, a little time in the water should be enjoyable! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I swear all the big over use injuries I've had all come from something I did after a really long or intense workout or after a big race. It's so hard to judge how to recover! Especially the first time you do a distance. You really have no idea how your body is going to react. Things that really help me recover and keep me occupied and busy: 1. Group rides with friends (no drop rides more social than racer!  2. trainer rides 1-3 10-20 min intervals at 70% or in Z2 3. Swim workouts 4. OWS'ing 5. Hikes 6. Easy MTB'ing
I just thought I'd share

I kicked off my year with a marathon last year. I had a terrible season. It's the reason I only kicked it off with a 1/2 marathon this year. I'm hoping the season goes better this year. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks guys! Brian and Ken, The reason I though my issues weren't "race-specific" is that I seem to get them even without racing, but maybe I should go look at the intensity i was doing in the weeks before the pain. Also, my last race was a 1.5 hr sprint, not that long for the volume I'm putting in, and I didnt start hurting until 5 days later, after I took a day off. I'll pay closer attention going forward, but as of today, I'm on the upswing. I'm sore and stiff (like i usually feel a day after a running race, not 9 days later) but it's not the screaming pain so I know all will be well in a few days. I certainly hope so, since its 5 days till HIM. I was in the exact condition that I am in now (painwise) when i stupidly tried to run a HM 2 months ago and I not only got myself a DNF, but was bearly able to get myself home afterwards. A few days of light taper should do the trick now. Happy training! |

Don't get discouraged. Everyone is different. Plus, I'm sure I went out too hard after the race and started working out to hard without enough recovery. It's just my nature! LOL |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey everyone! I have been lurking a bit, but not for almost a week so have a lot of reading to do. Thank you all for checking in on me I appreciate it. Been a rough few weeks. Found a new place to live, had to divide up stuff between the two of us. The christmas stuff was the worst. Oh well, onto the next chapter and looking forward to it. The past week has also been tough because I twisted my knee and have not been able to run, but I have been biking some. The other day I did a ride that I had done just a couple of months ago and the first time I did it I had to stop A LOT. This time, only once and that was to pick up my water bottle because I am a clutz that drops that crap. It was also my time to say goodbye to that area also. Felt kind of nice to be honest with you. Hope everyone is fine! |

I agree that life does sometime get in the way but I need to do a better job of life not getting in the way on my run days. I'm going to be using a custom plan from here on the site. Run 4x a week, Bike 4x a week and Swim 3x a week. I need to stay steady on my swim and bike and really concentrate on my run. I also need to drop a few more pounds. |

Took some discipline (and a huge competitive drive sick of starting the bike way behind) and I got better at the balance, you will too when you start realizing how fast the race is coming! |

How are you feeling?Got on the treadmill and raised the incline for a little sweat this morning, better than nothing I guess! How is everyone else doing? Races this weekend? I'm racing Sunday and now questioning every tri-related decision I've made in the last 6 months :-). Like why didn't i pick a flatter HIM for the 1st goround? Supposedly there is 4,000 ft of climbing on the bike and 1,000 on the run... No time goals, just gonna take it slow and keep the heart from exploding. The other goal is to finish without looking like a zombie. This will be the first time the family comes to a race and they let your kids finish with you. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() NICE Ken! that's Awesome!!
Best of luck this weekend Bill! You'll do fine, there's nothing wrong with your decisions IMO. You just have to decide which races are the "A's" and which are the "B's" and keep that in perspective. Us A type personalities hate to hold back on any race, but this is a skill you have to learn if you are using some races for training. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I finally have a race on Sunday!!!! A local sprint tri and definately not an "A" race. I plan on volunteering for the first 3 hours on the pool deck before my wave starts at 1pm. Never have done a tri without an open water swim, but I guess the lakes are still too cold here. Like I said not an A race and I won't be tapering - have a long ride on Friday.
