My mother and sister simultaneously drug out their wedding dresses and tried them on a few years ago - just to see if they fit. It was super uncomfortable for me. I mean it was kind of funny (both of the dresses were too BIG for them now) but seeing them prance around while I'm over here all single and such was a bit awkward.

I have t-shirts and sweaters and jackets from when I was in high school.  I was ~50 lbs lighter at the time so they've gone from the baggy-grunge-look to actually fitting me.

So Tony, Don't worry, you aren't strange if you have clothes from when you were 20.

I know I have socks that I got when I was 18...  That's a little strange no?

I'm just glad I can fit into clothes I wore when I was 20. Unlike some people who shall remain nameless, Cord.

I tried on my wedding dress from 20 years ago ... oh boy .. that was not a pretty site at all!

Yeah but you can pass it onto your daughter who shall wear it.

I wouldn't let her walk down any aisle in that hideous thing ... ugliest wedding dress ever!  I walked in to the bridal shop said ... whatcha got under $200? There were 3 choices .. all equally hideous and I picked the one that fit.  Romantic story,  no?

At times I WISH I had gone into the store and asked for whatever was the absolute cheapest thing they had.  In less than a year I've had 3 different dresses (yes, I realize this was MY choice) the least expensive of which was a $300 cocktail length white dress for the ceremony in London that never happened.  Ugh.

As Meh said... ALL dresses from 20 years ago were terrible, and at least you didn't spend a carpload on it!

I also am part of the cheap wedding dress clan.  When my ex and I got married, i really did not want the big ordeal.  450 people later......ugh.  I was suck-in to having a weeding that cost us 35K.  My mom and dad had passed, so we mostly paid for everything.

The day I went shopping for a dress, I found one that was absolutely beautiful and it was beautiful BUT it was $3500.  Everyone was there to see it and  did the whole crying thing that I never got?!? I could not justify a 3500 dresses for a 12 hour day!!!  The next weekend I walked into david's bridal alone and they had a $99 sale.  I picked-up one dress, tried it on and walked out with the dress that day, no alterations needed at ALL.

$35k for the wedding?  That's not much less than my first house.  Dang I'm old.

Get off my lawn!

my wedding dress was about $300 from david's bridal.  i saw it online, loved it, tried it on, still loved it, and was set.  i see no point in spending so much money on a dress you wear once.  it's been sitting in a garment bag in the spare bedroom for 18 months now.  i will probably sell it/donate it to the charity that collects wedding and prom dresses for low income families.

cool story, bro.

but to be fair, i've never seen a picture of a wedding dress from the 80s that wasn't hideous, at least you didn't pay too much for it.

Exactly ... I had some monster puff sleeved thing.  The 80's were a rough time for fashion.  Funny thing is I went to Bakers (remember that cheap shoe store) and bought some white pumps for $15.99.   My entire wedding ring set .. engagement ring and band was only $500 and it was still custom made to what I wanted.  We were saving to buy a house and saw no point in spending tons of money on things neither of us cared about.  Frugal we were!

Sorry the questions begs to be asked- why would you try this dress on today ?

After I got married my grandma had it cleaned and sealed up in this tomb-like fancy box.  Since then it's been a "in the storage shed" item long forgotten.  I cleaned out the storage and busted it out of it's blue and white tissue paper tomb to show my daughter what it looked like.  She tried it on and it was way too big but she hammed it up for the camera .. she then dared me to try it on.  And I did .. and it did NOT fit.  A couple of friends of mine and I have talked about wearing our dresses on a muddy hike and taking silly pics ... essentially trashing them.  It would awesome .. if I could get it zipped.  Could keep it around for a Halloween zombie bride costume too!

Or not.....

For sure! There are things I'm working on changing like everyone is, but current status is definitely happy.

With the exception of this head cold I have going on right now.

I said it was awkward/uncomfortable, not sad. And it was years ago, when I was definitely in a sad place then.

You have to admit it's strange for 2 women to be prancing around in their wedding dresses from 20 and 40 years ago?! Or at least understand it is soooooo not the way they usually act.

One thing is that you become invisible.

When I was about 34, I filled in as a lecturer for a professor at UT while he was off at a conference.  It was the first time I had been back on a college campus since I graduated.  I was a beautiful spring day so I walked around campus.  I was feeling like a college kid again.  But there was something different.  At first I couldn't put my finger on it.  Then I realized.  I was invisible.  You know how when you meet someone on the sidewalk they either meet your eyes or they avert their eyes.  Either way your presence is acknowledged.  On that day, I realized that the true college kids did not do either they just looked right past me on the sidewalk like I was invisible.  It was a revelation.  At 34, I was already middle aged.

TW

That's very interesting.  And poetic.  And tragic all at the same time.

Maybe that's why professors grow pony tails and wear tie-dye or worse outfits.  They're trying to stand out so they're not invisible???

My master plan is to be a college professor in some podunk town someday.  I could teach all kinds of stuff.  Probably business.  Or history.

Got my USCIS receipts in the mail yesterday!!  I don't have a Green Card yet, but it means that they've received the applications and I *should* get appointments for fingerprinting and interviewing soon. (note: by "soon" I mean government soon, which means probably another 4 months or so...)

Ha!  As Tony already knows (we actually DO talk every once in a while) I can't look for work AT ALL until I have the Green Card in my hands.  To do otherwise would be very, VERY bad in terms of being allowed to stay in the country.

What to do... what to do... it would be easiest to go back into law as that's where I have the most experience, but if something else comes along that's interesting I'd be more than happy to check out other opportunities.  Bottom line... something that will PAY me!
