Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Thanks, guys. Got in a 1000m OWS today. It was rough. Water was choppy, swelly, etc. I did get my sighting method in place for this weekend for such conditions just in case. I strongly dislike salt water in my nasal passages. Just wanna get that out there. 5 mile recovery run in the hood too. Slow and comfy. Not sure what to do tomorrow. 2 road bike sessions this week, rest day for run schedule, one swim... another swim, no? |

New user 410 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Morning all. I had my first swim lesson this week and learned several things. My lower body isn't really interested in this swimming thing, got work to do there! Breathing is also an issue, there is a lot to focus on and invariably when I am focused on recruiting my legs my breathing gets off and vice versa. She says it will all come so I will believe! I am headed to an Arkansas state park today, very excited. I have a 4.5 mile trail picked out to do! |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Good morning-checking in from the road. Easy 5 on the treadmill yesterday and today. Hope to get home tomorrow in time to get an easy hour in on the trainer. Some longer sessions on tap forthe weekend. Blanda-good luck this weekend! |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I ran last night at around 6:00 and for the first time in a couple months I could read my Garmin all of the way until the end of the run. The days are getting longer for sure! Hooray! I had a spectacular run last night. I felt better than I have in awhile running but I must have used up all of the energy in my legs for the run because my session on the bike/trainer this morning was a disaster. Juggling the training load of two leg-centered sports can sure be interesting. It may not have helped that my hard intervals on the bike were about 11 hours after the hard intervals on the run. My wife is grumbling about my recent run of 9:30 bed times. I try to train early to not impose on the family too much but no matter how you slice it, if you want to train for long course triathlon something has to give, at least a little. |

Extreme Veteran 1190 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Just did my first step up run to 2.5 miles from 2.25. Felt great. I bookended it before and after with 20 minutes on the bike. You guys may just make a runner out of me yet! Quick question. What source(s) do you use to calculate calories burned? |

Member 2098 Simsbury, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED CRAZY week for me. DH got his new ACL on Tuesday and was quite uncomfortable yesterday. Today was a little better and tomorrow is his first PT appointment. And then..... we should get home just in time for the BLIZZARD to start! YEP we're predicted to get between 15-24inches of snow. But really it's the wind that makes it a blizzard. Stay safe out there! I'll check in if we have power |

This has been one of the greatest adjustments we've had to make here in our house. My wife is a night owl, and I need to be in bed by 10 most nights now. It'll be even tougher in a few weeks when I start going to 3 swim workouts a week, which will mean three 4:45 mornings/week. It's been an adjustment, but I can really tell when I don't get a full night's sleep now! Speaking of that, swim workout done this morning and 1 hour on the trainer tonight. It's time to do some sitting around before bed! |

Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Jason: It's so hard trying to keep everyone happy and get in the quality training. Chunga: "Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming..." So, I've taken off about 4 minutes from my 1500m practice swims in the pool since March of last year. I'm at about 2:45 per 100m now. Still no Speedy McSpeedster, but I'm improving! Yay! That's my only training for the day. Now I have the rest of the day to rest. |

New user 410 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Blanda good luck with your race! Great morning went on a 4.5 mile trail hike! My partner has MS so I was alone which was a tad unnerving, especially when I fell crossing a small creek. Not hurt just wet, did the last 3.5 miles with soaked shoes socks and jeans. Beautiful morning and sights. Feels great to be able to do these things, very blessed. |

I'm not crazy about going in the woods by myself either. It seems like everywhere I go, I come across someone affected by MS. This disease hits home and is a charity that is near and dear to my heart. This quarterly magazine just came out for our local chapter. See page 16 of the Spring 2013 link. New user 410 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Thanks for the link!We have an MS ride in my area I am going to do this fall.We have been very fortunate. We got the diagnosis 17 years ago, she no longer works due to the disease but she is pretty mobile and can still do many things. She deals with a lot of pain and is very inspirational to me. |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Hello all! Home after a few days on the road. Had my bike checked out and a new chain installed while I was out of town. So much better.....drivetrain is so much quieter now. Was able to get in an easy hour on the trainer this evening. Longish bike and brick run tomorrow and bike and run on Sunday. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. |

Master 2177 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Thanks for the luck! Jamie, thank you. I was so proud of myself, lol! It's a big deal to this island girl who was afraid of water most of her life! Well, I have a cold. That's not going to be fun to race with. My throat feels like there's a small fire in it, my nasal passages are swollen and aggravated, eyes irritated. Le booo. Will give it a good go anyway. |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Sorry, missing in action the last couple days.... 24 hour shift at work and then recovery from that shift pretty much knocked me on my butt. Today is a 90 minute trainer session (a really hard one that has me more than a little scared) and a 4 mile transition run. I am also going to get a short swim lesson/touch up session before my daughter's swim lesson today so all in all, a busy training day. We will see how it goes. Yesterday I did a swim set that I know even three months ago would have been impossible for me to even consider; 22 x 100 all under 1:30. It is a great accomplishment and yet I want to be faster. I am satisfied but still hungry to be better. It reminds me of the saying, "it never gets easier, you just get faster." I am anxiously awaiting the "faster breakthrough" on the bike but is sure as heck is not getting easier. My coach keeps upping the ante with power numbers and duration of intervals. I look at the plan and tremble in fear at every bike workout. One of these days I had better have a breakthrough and get somewhat faster.... Anyone have big plans for this weekend? |

Master 3205 ann arbor, michigan | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Blanda, I am definitely coming down with some kind of cold as well. I thought I had avoided it as it worked its way through my family but now I have the sore throat, runny nose, general achiness that my family has been going through. It kind of sucks. Good luck with your race feeling this way. I feel for you. |

Veteran 330 Denton | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Not much going on in the Dallas area today ... I had my usual s/b/r workout yesterday. I am loving these brick workouts very much. Its fun seeing the work pay off. I had a massage yesterday and this morning I felt a little bit sore from the massage. I decided to jump in the pool for a few laps and ended up doing 120 at an all day pace. Not sore anymore :-) Now off to go run for 30 minutes and then tomorrow I have a 2 hour ride scheduled if the weather cooperates. |

Member 2098 Simsbury, Connecticut | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Happy Saturday. I did cross training today in the form of snowblowing and shoveling 36" of snow. I'm spent. Need a nap. ZZZZZZ Usually DH does the shoveling but since he just had surgery he's using that as an excuse and I had to do it all |

Master 3058 South Alabama | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED Beautiful day here. Had a good bike workout. 3x25 minutes @ just over HIM pace watts on 5 min recovery between intervals. Last week was the same workout but with 20 minute work intervals so I was worried about the workout today. Felt stronger than last week and was above goal target on all 3. Then an easy 3 mile brick run. Legs were turning over well so pace was more moderate than easy. All in all a good day of workouts. Having a pretty easy week heading into today definitely had my legs feeling fresher! |

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I got a 2 1/2 hour bike ride in with Nate this morning. We were both happy afterward with how good we felt. It started out cold, but warmed up as time went on. The ride didn't go perfectly, as I keep trying new routes around town, and my directions don't always match up perfectly, but we managed to get back to the start without any major hiccups. I'm very glad there's not a blizzard here right now! I like snow, but I do NOT want to do 2 hours on a trainer when I could do them outside instead. |

New user 410 | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I went out for another trail hike today, 2 1/2 hours, lots of up and down. Really enjoyed it. It was cool out but not cold. Legs are a tad sore but I doubt I would have done one of these hikes a year ago and definitely not both of them. Progress! |

Extreme Veteran 1190 Silicon Valley | Subject: RE: Slornow and Wannabefaster's Winter Mentor Group-CLOSED I wanted to do one of my favorite rides but it has become too short for a good workout so I extended it a bit on the out of town road. Unfortunatley that meant a 12.3 mile stretch of steady inclines into a 9mph head wind. Add to that two consecutive days at the PT with them working over my legs plus I didn't get much sleep last night. By the time I made the turn I felt like someone had taken a baseball bat to my legs. I know you have to push thru days like this and they pay dividends later etc etc but right now, I just hurt. Now I have 18 hours to 'rest up' for a 30+ mile ride tomorrow morning with my LBS group. Man I love this sport! |
