Now off to do my six mile long run (first time ever)! It's going to be an endurance event, fo sho. Funny how those short sprints wreck your calves! I can run and run, swim for hours, even ride on the trainer for long periods. One Step class and I'm crippled! Good luck with your 6 miler! Report back....I so don't wanna do any work today! Well, I did it. The first three were tough, and a mental battle. I promised myself after mile three I'd take a water break (forgot water bottle), and after that the last three were easier (though not easy). Forging into unchartered territory is great. As for being an Adventist (a Christian denomination for those not wanting to take the time to look it up), we have a strong emphasis on healthy living. The mental battles are the hardes - file it away in your suffer files, to be used when you're out suffering again! Yeah, I'm learning not to believe what my body is telling me over the first half of a workout. Unless, of course, there's an injury type of pain, but in the absence of that, I'm learning to push through it. It's funny, there's one swim workout I did back in October that stands out in my mind. I think I did 200y before quitting, lol! That one gets chalked up as a life lesson. First 2km of any run of any distance - I loathe. Swim squad, 1km warm up or however long it is - i think of bailing all the way through that. Then boom it's over and we're onto the main set and I'm loving life! It's once the endorphins are pumping I'm fine. Jo have you tried that your bike? On the trainer until you are warmed up then out on the road? Ive tried everything except riding the thing |

CLOSED Well my swim smooth stuff arrived today so that Management assignment that I am meant to get finished this week just got put to the bottom of the pile while I read my book that is far more interesting than debating the difference between Management and Leadership and whether I find the distinction useful or not. By the way if any one wants to write me 2000 words on that subject feel free to volunteer. If that doesnt interest you I have a number of other topics you could choose from including 10,000 words on how the Governance structure of the organization that I work for affects Leadership within the organization. Stace Face ... every time I think of you and your big slobbery dogs and dog hair, it makes me smile. You know that sort of house protection only attracts me I might have 1000 or so words you could fudge around for the management/leadership discussion. What's academic honesty between friends? Whoops, this is now on the Internet so it will never die ... I *really* wanted to get a Swimsmooth 1-on-1 video analysis and coaching session when I was in Perth, but those things are impossible to get! |

I did a one hour ride tonight and no numb toes and only very slight burning in the balls of my feet which was alleviated by moving my feet around a bit. Good luck to everyone racing tomorrow I hope that you have a great race and enjoy all those lovely rewards that you have been telling us all about.HAVE FUN!!! Excellent news! |

The course was terrible -- lots of stairs, steep slippery brick downhills, crowded crossing, hail in my face for a miles over a bridge -- so it’s not a race I would ever do again or recommend. Super sore right now. Still kind of cold. Ack! Sorry that the race wasn't so awesome. Sucks to go out their in the weather and tough it out only for a not so great course. At least now you know. :-/ But did you get the Irish coffee? |

My race went pretty well, in retrospect. I was hoping for a better time, but again it was a learning experience, and I am good with that. The most fun part was that on the way home we stopped at the Manatee viewing area. Over 100 manatees floating around just outside of a power plant. The water is warm, so they are happy. Manatees to cheer you on! Woo hoo! Congratulations Chris! |

Ive tried everything except riding the thing Snerk!!! Ah Jo, you will get there. You will. I hear you on warming up, though. I'm a superstar the first 100 in the water, then I'm dying until about 1K as well. One reason I do long warmups! (I think they're long, but I goggle at the length of some of the warmups in stock swim workouts--and understandable if you're doing sprints or a really, really hard main set, but 800 WU for a total 2500m workout?!) Okay while I'm on the subject, and henceforth 'til IMNZ I plead taper madness for all the inappropriate stuff I say (I'll find a new excuse after post-IM depression, etc.) ... I really can't believe Don Fink includes 800 worth of drills in his swim workouts, regardless of the workout! So yes, a 2500yd workout, with a 300 WU/CD AND 800 of drills?! I can see that as ONE workout in a swim-focused, really-needing-to-improve swimming training cycle, but honestly I think it's folly to recommend everybody, from the Just Finish to Competitive folks, do 800 of drills per workout. Then again, he also really recommends that you just go to Masters. And he has a ton of other good stuff in there, and I've used Be Iron Fit plans as the framework for every IM training I've done (which, so far, is six ... ) |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Mad Manatee Mentors, Part 2! CLOSED Wooo, I really need to get in the habit of getting on BT and the manatee thread more on the weekends; so many neat things happen to the gang and I want to comment but some of the things are 6 pages ago!! So I'll try to do a quickie (cuz we know manatees like quickies) run down: awesome swim, Jo; great races, Chris, Speedy Salty, Kate, Jen (will read RRs next); Jen got hailed on (nasty ouchie!); soccer studs Tom and MadMath were keeping their calves and quads going; Chris saw manatees (sooo jealous!! I *heart* manatees! My parents have been to that power plant to see them, too); Stacey got new bike shoes and hopefully got rid of hot foot (yay!!). Jo - those beach pics make me soo envious! I'm sure I missed someone, so my apologies. We're a busy bunch! My hockey team won our game Sat (YAY!) and my training/race went well Sunday. Salty - I didn't 'race' the race because I was to do a total of 5 miles for my HM plan and didn't want to go too fast and get hurt. I have a strong paranoia/fear of getting hurt during these mileage increases which would really pizz me off. The March race will be a whole 'nother story! I'm definitely gonna race that one and try for a PR, and coincidently/awesomely a 5K race falls on that date as part of my plan. It flurried the majority of the race which I loved, so pretty! Although it was hella windy and cold and the snow stung a few times, but it was a fair trade-off IMO. No race report yet as the results haven't been posted yet and I don't know my time since I did pre and post miles which left me without my own tracked time. I mostly stuck to my plan although I accidently negative splitted each mile, mainly because I was feeling good. Still tried to keep myself reeled in, though. No pink girl but there were 2 girls with red feather beelie boppers...I'll save them for the RR! |

Our body being "a temple of the Holy Spirit", and all that. There are a lot of Adventists that are vegetarians in pursuit of healthy living. It's great, I like it. Well done on the six-mile training PR, Foxy! Ah HA! I caught another one of you. That's another coupon for me to Souplantation I lived in Loma Linda for seven years. 'Nuff said ... actually I was involved with two SDA churches (one we started, y'know with real music 'n' all, and we started an additional service at the other church that had contemporary worship music), tutored students at Loma Linda Allied Health, did rounds, volunteering, ER work, you name it I did it at Loma Linda University Medical Center. The fellow I got a legal separation from is SDA--his dad was a preacher/missionary based in Lebanon but went all over the Muslim world and was a scholar of Islam. His mom was a nurse and nurse manager forever. So we ate vegetarian. Sometimes he and I, the black sheep carnivores, would eat meat if we went out for a special meal. I do remember I drew the line when we were watching a cooking show where the lady was making cashew cheese and the stuff that was going into it was worse than regular cheese! I remain at heart a Seventh-day Adventist, but really, mah soul belongs to the Lawd and that's just that. (but it always seems to me Saturday is the Sabbath, which makes me very popular with Jewish boys). I have nothing but good things to say about the Adventists. Sure, there's weird people and bad apples in every kind of community, including religious ones, but man ... I was *loved* and taught how to *love* by example. Also, as far as Adventist missions go, it's evangelism by providing healing and teaching (health/medicine and education, very very very strong points), which is pretty much how I figure Jesus did it. Also, y'all ordain women . Okay, I'll get off the pulpit now. It's just a part of my being and past, and of many dear friends for life, that I cherish. So what's your story? |
