Haha - I guess it's like the difference/performance increase from a $1000 bike -> $2000 bike -> $10000 bike.

Originally posted by firebert Question time for the swimmers, on suits. While taking lessons to learn how to swim properly, I switched from regular trunks to lycra 'jammers', with the idea of reducing drag (and stopping my shorts falling down every time I pushed off the wall). these worked great, and generally I can get a pair made by Speedo or TYR for like $30. Then I saw 'racing' or 'tech' suits, made of hydrphobic fabrics and all this, for like $100 or more. And I figured that was just gaining a few seconds per 1000 or something, so I've stuck with my tried and true $30 ones. But today I saw the new tech suits for 2016 out, and they're all $350. For jammers. Am I crazy or are they?

A few seconds per 1000 (or even a half second per 100) makes a big difference to swimmers competing at higher levels.  From what I've read they're even more impactful than that, especially when you're moving faster in the water.

As for us, I think the $12 Swim Outlet bargain jammers will do.  LOL

There are people in my lane who may disagree with your statement when the suit quickly becomes see through and the seams start to split...

hahahaha! There was just a discussion on the Women For Tri site on FB about the see-through suit....a woman was debating if she should mention to another woman that her suit was completely see-through and everyone in master's (predominantly male) stares the entire time she's there. hahahaha! My hubby's suit thinned out a bit much and I had to make a comment to him about it....he said he was trying to raise the morale of the folks there...put a little pep in their step. (literally he had no idea and hit Dick's Sporting Goods on the way home to grab another one).

I digress... yes, races are lost in 100th's and even 1000th's of a second on the big stage. I'm a Swim Outlet kind of store if I can find my size....what the heck, we're just training in them, right? My suit is a double-layer training suit so it's not made to be fast at all...and it's so baggy now I'm pulling all kinds of drag. I think of it like pulling a parachute when running sprints. LOL

I usually buy from Wiggle on sale, anyone will be good enough for me, just aim to finish with "dignity" - at one point I was about to get a pair of those made with neoprene but probably not worth to train in a swim suit that increases buoyancy when they are not allowed at races.

There is a reason I will never buy another dolphin brand suit. Let's just say hiding in the corner of a lane while my husband ran to get a me a towel after a seam issue on a brand new suit is something I hope to NEVER live through again

So far, the massive calorie intake is going okay. Managed to get in 3900 yesterday, thanks to two large bourbons required by the circumstances of the day. As of this morning, I'm down three pounds from Monday. Increasing calories to lose weight is counter-intuitive to me, but I guess I'll ride this wave as long as it will carry me!
mmm, bourbon. That made me smile. Seems like by the end of the day, this becomes a wonderful and necessary relaxation tool.

Horrible run this morning. The first three miles were slow, and I walked halfway through 4,5,and 6. I had 0 energy. Not sure if it was a fuel, or just plain tired issue. I am glad it's behind, and hoping for a better effort tomorrow. Some days are like that.

A horrible run beats no run!! Good for you trying to stick with it. Maybe you needed some fuel?
I miscalculated my day today and didn't get my brick in at all. I knew the run piece couldn't happen right after the bike with the icy streets but stuff just kept happening and I didn't get my 45 min bike in either. Sheesh, so bad. Tomorrow the alarm goes off at 05:00 and I'm walking downstairs to my trainer...after the kids get on the bus I'm off to the pool, then a late morning meeting. But darn it, I'm knocking these workouts out early tomorrow to make sure I get them done!!

First I would like to thank everyone for the prayers and post.

Gretchen- In addition to calories you may want to think about adding some strength training (if you are not already) squats, lunges, deadlifts will really help with run and bike speed. Pull ups and shoulder press will help with swimming. Another way is to add some z4 to your workouts. Going long in z2 will let you run further but not necessarily faster.

John- I use the cheapest jammers I can find sometimes on amazon sometimes swim outlet.

I bought the Iron Fit half book and have put the training program in an excel spreadsheet (I included the full workout also). If anyone is interested I can email it to you. I am now following this plan for both races this year. It is a 16 week plan so I will do it twice, but maybe try to add some strength for the second race as my base will be built.

Did an hour on the bike today, I am getting use to getting up at 0200. I go to bed between 8-9 now but that still only gives me 5-6 hours a night.

I have the Be Iron Fit full book and would be happy to put that in a spreadsheet as well. I'd be curious to see how they compare. This one is a 30 week plan and I think caps out at 15 hours per week for workouts (for the competitive/intermediate plans).
I have to look back because I've forgotten, but are you doing a HIM then IMMD also?

1 hour bike at "high" cadence done this morning and now heading to the pool. "High" is in quotes because I thought I was doing well....alas, not so much. I only averaged 90 on my cadence - need to get my legs moving on these early morning rides. Disappointed in my performance. Does anyone with the 920xt have it so the cadence is on-screen for your bike? I haven't figured out how to do this yet and can only see the cadence once it's uploaded to Garmin Connect. It would certainly be helpful to hold myself accountable.

Just had the sudden realization that there are only 17 days until my first Half Marathon. Had a great 4.5 mile maintenance run Tuesday, and a good swim last night. Last week (first swim since August) we managed 800 in the 'slow lane', this week we were up to 1200. And I kept up! I'll get my swim legs back soon.

Though my hips and calves are really tight today - going to have to figure something out if I'm going to get my 2nd run this week done today...

Love the swimsuit talk. Knock on wood, I haven't had any malfunctions yet and my suit is from Amazon. Also, this is super random, but in case you use Amazon but aren't aware of Amazon Smile, it's basically the same site, only a small amount of eligible purchases goes to a charity of your choice. Just go to smile.amazon.com. It's a nice little way to give back for stuff you're buying anyway.

Had a great workout at my gym this morning, and a lovely dinner last night and breakfast this morning with a friend who was in town for work. It started my Thursday off great! I have swim lessons tonight so hope to get a few laps in just to loosen up a little. Tomorrow I think I'm going to go for a run in the morning, then do a gym workout Saturday morning, and a swim after that. Sunday I will do another gym workout and now my gym is offering a recovery class that includes foam rolling and such, so I'm going to check that out as well. I will probably run there and back too. Not sure if it will all be too much, but we will see! Trying to push myself a little extra to see how much my body can take

Jenn, I'm pretty sure you can configure your 920 to have it show on the screen.  I have a Fenix 2 and I can do it (though I usually just look at my TrainerRoad screen for the trainer and my Edge 800 outdoors - but outdoor riding has so much variation anyway...).

I also did a high-cadence "form sprint" workout this morning.  I do think there's some value in cadence variation but eventually we all just settle back to what's comfortable for us.  It's those with wacky "grind it out" or "I'm in spin class" cadences that should really work on it.

Yesterday was 30 minutes on the trainer doing the crit WU on TrainerRoad - basically hits all the different systems, then a quick 10 minutes on the treadmill to see how my shin pain is progressing - definite improvement but we will tread lightly (pun fully intended ).  Last evening was 45' in the pool and then upper body and core.

This morning was 45' on the trainer - 10 x 30" form sprints and then 2 x 6' high sweet spot.  I hate mornings.    Pool and Body Combat tonight.  Hopefully I won't feel like I've been in a car wreck this time.

#87--30 minute trainer ride this morning with an attempt to keep my cadence up above 80 no matter the gear. Not too bad in that department, but not perfect. Followed it up with 15 minutes of yoga, which was all I had time for today because I "slept in" til 6am.

I can't remember if I told you all, but my long trip to Egypt has been officially cancelled. If I go at all now, it will only be for a month in May-June. I'm disappointed, but at the same time I was already looking at races during the time I would have been away. Still thinking about the HIM. Need to talk to my wife about it, since she is the one who will suffer most (she does all the laundry!).

I have my indoor bike set to only show cadence and heart rate. Seeing the time on the trainer just made me sad

Had a successful week so far. Getting up early is now getting back to being more of a habit. Though I still say "waking up is the hardest thing I do everyday!" I really am so lazy I hate it. Anyway getting it done is all that counts. This morning was an hour ride and a 10 minute transition run. I rearranged my training plan to have Saturday be the off day this week since the wife is away so nothing now until Sunday when she's back and I run. Enjoying my favorite Basil Haydens bourbon to enjoy Friday night.

3.25 mi run this morning followed by 30 min of yoga (#88 & 89). Both felt really good.

Unfortunately, right after I finished my workouts the mechanic called. I think my 2000 Ford Explorer (with 196,0XX) is very likely dead, with no hope of cost effective resuscitation. That was a great vehicle and it has taken me through so much in my life. I bought it when I was fresh out of undergrad. I will be sad to see that car go. Perhaps I'm sadder at the prospect of spending the weekend trying to find a new truck. I hate buying cars (thus the reason I've had mine for 15 years!!).

Gretchen, sorry to hear about your vehicle! I am also car hunting right now, and the most upsetting prospect for me is having a car payment when I haven't had one for YEARS. Such is life, I suppose.

I love seeing all these awesome workouts that everyone is doing. Keep up the good work!

I am heading home shortly to try my hand at making chicken tikka masala (the chicken is currently marinating in the fridge). Going to the gym early tomorrow, teaching some swim lessons, then hopefully getting some laps in afterwards. Another gym workout Sunday morning as well, and a few birthday celebrations to keep me busy!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
