You guys are going to do awesome!  You've already done more preparing for an IM than most people (myself included) will ever do, the rest is just icing on the cake.  You two will definitely be in our prayers this week.

I can't wait to read the race reports!!!

I got the OK from the doc to race today, so I guess I ran out of excuses.  Here's a brief synopsis,  I'll post up a Race Report when the results are available.

I finished in 1:35:13 by my watch, we'll have to see what the official time was.  Swim was good, would have been better.  I was about 2/3's of the way to the first bouy when I realized why I had such clear water - I was sighting the second bouy.  So my swim was 850 or 875 yds.  The bike was great, I love the course and have ridden in many times in training.  The run sucked, it was hot and HILLY!

Why do these out-n-back runs put the water at the turn around?  If they put it half way out, you could hit it twice on the run.

Grats on completing your TRI in what looks like a decent time. Sighting is a pain in the swim, especialy as the distance gets longer with fogged gogles and sun and <---- poor vision. Ya heat and hills dont go so well together. Still 98 F here. I am sooo glad I got up at 6am to get my 56 mile bike ride in before noon. Anyway pat yourself on the back, try to worm a backrub out of your wife for your hard work... has never worked for me but.. Take a well earned day off and take care of those lungs.

Tracy,

What book were you looking for?

I think I saw it at borders and was going to pick it up but wasn't sure if it was the one you wanted.

Good time Matt.
Well the wedding went off without a hitch. My daughter was so beautiful..
Now it' off to the beach for some well deserved rest and uninterupted easy training. I won't be loggin in as I don't have any internet access up there.

Hope the ironman wasn't too brutal. I just finished watching the Olympic women's tri and unfortunately Canada did not medal and one of our athletes was in a bike accident just a tthe end of the 40K and broke her arm. How rooten is that luck.

Anyway Have a great week everyone.

Very well done Matt!  That is a great idea about the water station. I never really thought about it before but that makes perfect sense!

Tony, are there any forums you don't read?  Holy Cow!!  The book is called "Bobke - A Ride on the Wild Side of Cycling"  It is an older book, published in 1995.  It's his first book about cycling.  Amazon only has used copies for sale at what I think are ridiculous prices.  If you really do find a copy of it (for less than the $100 of Amazon) please let me know.  Here is a photo of the cover, according to Amazon.  My husband and one of my riding partners really want to read it.  Thanks.

Bobke: A Ride on the Wild Side of Cycling

I did my longest run this weekend - 8 miles!  Wow was my body sore for  the rest of the weekend!  I really under estimated how much running pounds on your body. The minute I stopped running my butt and hamstrings felt like rocks!  But I was very proud of myself. This time last year I couldn't run one mile, let along 8!

Oh, and I dragged my little work buddy around town for 50 miles on Sunday, that was a lot of fun.  When the race started I was a little discouraged about myself. There were a large number of women that were doing the 75 and 100 mile rides - so I was feeling very inadequate. But then I said to myself, "yhea, but I bet those women don't swim before and run afterwards "  Petty I know, but it made me feel better.  I have to keep reminding myself that we train for 3 sports, not just one, and it's okay to cut myself some slack.

I hope the heat lets up for all you sweltering soles out there and everyone has a great week of training. And Mark, it looks like those Texas runners are starting to pick it up at the Olympics!  I was thinking of you this weekend.  Hope the family is well.

Bah pool was closed for my swim on Sunday. I even asked them on Friday what their hours would be on Sunday (as the posted hours do not always reflect when they are open). Oh well.

So I ran to church on Sunday (13.25) instead of taking the car, I gave up massive multiplayer role playing games on the internet (don't have time), am getting up at 6 am on a Saturday to get my workout in before it gets too hot and am coming to work an hour early so I can get out to the pool before it closes (if they are even open) to swim at night. I am dreading the slow loss of daylight hours as summer comes to an end. I consider a 40 mile bikeride, half mile swim and a 8 mile run short. Dang I may just be turning into a triathlete. Oh did I mention remodeling my home to put a resistance pool in....

I totally hear you on the what I was doing last year at this time. Last year at this time I weighed 180 pounds (142 ish now, pizza lastnight), could probably jog 1 mile, swim oh 50 yards freestyle (longer breastroke) and ride a bike well 5-10 miles not that I regularly did any of those things.

This year I have competed in a 5k, 10 mile, half mary, sprint tri and olympic tri. And am
now, on a HIM schedule and plan to hit one probably next spring. Finding a place to reliably swim is the deal breaker atm until I have my own space. But I hear ya on comparing myself to others who are training for IM and are covering twice the distance at a blinding pace. Hard to look at the path ahead and judge how far we have yet to go without appreciating the past and just how far we have come in such a short time with the help of knowledgable folks on BT. I do tend to swing philosophical at times, oh well back to work.

Well my second tri and first Oyl are now under my belt and now my season is finished (maybe). Finished in 2:49 (still waiting for official results, race report will be public after times are confirmed) and was 93 out of 220+ overall. it was great though, the Swim and Bike were easy, swim was 30 minutes and bike was 1:15, run was a horrible 1:03, but I guess since I have only run 3 times in the last 5 weeks and all of those in the past week I shouldn't have hoped for better. All in all I am very happy with the accomplishment, and I definitely know what I have to do to improve for next year. Taking a couple week to recoupe and do some easy training, then starting a 8 week running program to improve and then race a 5 miler in November.

I want to thanks all of you for all your support and advice over the months, this forum has definitley made this solo sport a group activity and it has helped greatly.

Good luck to Steve and Igo next week, I will not be able to make it out there next weekend (meaning no IM Canada for me next year, 2010 for sure) so I will be cheering  for you from here and watching the web feeds.

Perry that is outstanding!  I'm sorry I didn't realize you were racing this weekend, and your first Olympic too!  What a magnificent accomplishment.  Your posting sounded like a goodbye address, I hope that's not the case.     I think we all need to attempt a HIM for next year and we need to pick a central location that we all travel to and compete together.  I would love to meet everyone.   Please keep posting and keep us up to date on the running progress.

I've been kicking the idea of a late season (2009) HIM around lately.  I was looking at one next September, but the USAT description of the bike course was one word - HILLY.  Sorry, but 56 miles of hills doesn't fly here when it's sandwiched between a 1.2 mile swim and a Half Marathon.  We'll see, the addition to the family next spring might make training a little more difficult.

My wife and I were thinking about the patriots 1/2 next year it is just about a full year out from now.  Supposed to be super flat course.

I THINK WE SHOULD ALL DO THE SAVAGE MAN HIM!!! (ha ha ha)  Here is a UTube link to the famous hill that the race boasts about, 25% grade and you can see people falling over and/or walking up the hill.  This is the only traithlon that has 2 bike courses so you can avoid this hill!!

x2 on the no thanks.

Before this tri thing came along, I was a pretty avid mountain biker.  I have not ridden my mtb since May and June/July are prime riding months around these parts.  So today, if the weather doesn't deteriorate much further, I'm going to hit the trails.  Hopefully just figuratively.

Grats on the Oly completion, it turns out we were pretty close on our first Olys. You had me 4 minutes on the swim, our bike times were dead even and I had ya on the run by a bit, but only 3 minutes difference total time.

I was debating getting in an October HIM, but I am not sure I have the vollume I would like to have for a 6 hour race. I get in a 56 mile bike ride and 13 mile run each week, but am pretty much spent after those and need several hours before considering doing any more workouts.. and food.

I did an 80 min swim today, first swim longer than 60 min and well the mexican food for lunch didn't help, but it seemed to be a lot longer than the 60 min swim. I promplty came home and went straight to bed for 5 hours. Oh well, night folks.
