To the group peeps that will be at BSLT. I have officially got a relay team all together so I will be there. I fully expect there to be drinkage, shenanigans and swell times to be had.

Justin W,

I have been wearing winter leg warmers, arm warmers, an insulated skull cap which covers my ears, a vest for under my jersey with wind protection on the front, L. Garneau flex zone winter gloves, wool cycling socks, and a pair of chilly willie ski socks (a silk like material with metal flakes to hold body heat). Dressed like this I'm comfortable down to about the mid thirties.

A trainer would be more convenient, but I'm going to try to tough it out as long as possible. I think I'll make it through the winter. Plus there is just something about riding outside when there is no one else (cyclist) out there on the road.

Today the cold wasn't the issue it was the wind. Wind is blowing 18mph out of the NNW, with gusts up to 28. With a headwind I had trouble maintaining 15mph. With a tailwind I maintained 31+mph for over 2 minutes on an interval. Question why does it seem the head wind is always stronger than the tailwind??????

Rode my mt. bike in to the office this morning.  It's only 3 miles, but when I left it was 4 degrees with 2" of new snow on the ground.  I decided that anything below 10 is just too cold for my feet, but I definitely prefer cold over wind.

Nicole83 - 2010-01-07 9:57 AM What the...

I seriously do not even have words.

Clearly I underestimated the number of weirdos in the world when I made my pee standing up comment.  That is just... and it's.... oh lord.  And for the love of mac and cheese it's freaking pink!?!?!

I think I would be offended if I wasn't laughing so darn hard.

And Justin, doesn't matter who found it, you quoted Oprah.  Your man card is history.

Todd and Kevin, I am not the type of girl to ever refuse KFK hanky panky... so I might just need to adjust to a little sleep deprivation if I have to choose between the two.    (do they have a blushing bright red smiley face?)

Wow ... I was going to respond to Nicole's original question but I should probably deal with the water that shot out the nose and on the computer.

I totally had the same problem, only mine was iced coffee.  *shudder*

Everyone in Florida is whining because it was in the 30s this morning.

All you northern people that brave the conditions seriously have a ton of respect from me.  I would be in the gym on dreadmill or trainer without a second thought.

Just be careful out there, don't slip and break something you might want to use some day.

If I were in Florida and temps were in the 30s, I'd be whining too.  I have a climatologist/statistician friend who told me that temps right now in Florida are colder than those being experienced by most parts of Alaska and Greenland.  Not fair at all.

Hm, that's interesting.  How does one become a climatologist/statistician?

And I agree that it's certainly not warm.  I think I just don't much like listening to people whine.  It's going to be like this for 4-5 days, a week tops.  People who live in the north live with temperatures well below this for months at a time.

I feel like saying "wah wah wah" every time someone complains.

Hm, I wonder if I'm pmsing?

Sorry, off topic.

No I will not comment, nor will I post a link or pictures related to your status of pms-ing!

IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT IT WAS TOO SHOCKING (or just plain WTF?) WHAT I POSTED EARLIER... enough trauma has been done for this week!  lol!

I just got an email with pictures from up north some where, where the snow drifts are 10-20 feet (dwarfing houses) high!  Cold is one thing, but you start adding conditions like that... No Thank You!

Cheri - your knee pain... sore like muscles or sore like IT, ligament, cartlidge type issues.  I hope some anti-inflamatories can help it out and you are back on track in no time.  Injuries suck more than the previously mentioned snow drifts!

My under garment is under armour cold gear (top & bottom) . Then I put my bike short. Top I add a bike jacket or some thing windstopper. feet -wool socks then bike shoe with a goretex neoprene bootie. for hands I put the bike gloves then add winter gloves (insulated for wind and cold). Head usually just a beanie then helmet. If wind is really bad and face hurts (wool baklava or wind stopper type baklava). Usually that is it for me.

Trin2bfast - 2010-01-06 11:21 AM JP & Thomas...and the other cold weather riders out there.  Do you wear face coverings, full shoe covers, leg warmers or full pants/tights, and what kind of gloves?  (sorry multiple questions in one)   But seriously, I have worn layers for cold rides... and face, ears, hand & feet freeze the F' off even with gear on.  Granted I am not a 'cold weather' guy like some of you northerners or transplanted northerners... just curious.  I don't want to drop several hundred bucks on cold weather gear that I would only use a few times a year.  More worthwhile to me to invest in a trainer.

Something strange is happening in my log today....there's some....purple?!?!?! Surprised

Back from the pool and it was nice to get back...tough, but nice. I'm looking forward to more. And I think the lane issues might be dealt with as long as we request an extra lane rope be put up before we start the swim. I can do that.

On a side note, Nik and I have corrupted encouraged a friend and co-worker to do triathlons, so she joined us in the pool today. It will be nice to have another person at the lunch table actually understand this crazy obsession of triathlon. She's actually been pretty supportive of us and has come watch us do 2 and that is what has inspired her to start training. She'll be doing the Lonestar Sprint the day before we do the Half, so we'll repay the favor and support her on race day, too.

Hope everyone stays warm and has great workouts to end the week!

Whoa.  Busy day here today.  I had meetings in the city, so no time for internet cruising and missed about 20 pages of posts.  Won't attempt to comment on any of them, but did have a moments pause thinking about the upside of peeing standing up.

Meetings were on 57th and 5th.  How convenient.   Am thinking about switching to a Mac. Bergdorfs is across the street but I'm hanging in the Apple store over lunch.

Apple put macs into all of my kids classrooms at school and he does not know how to use a PC, I got him a Macbook 3 months ago and decided that I needed to be able to at least be able to answer questions about his computer so I got one for myself ... He has been able to answer most of my questions...

Question for the folks that use an indoor trainer - ummm do you bother to lube?  Until tonight my rides had been short but I gotta say about 45 minutes into this ride I was wishing for some glide.
I will try to think ahead next time.

I also noticed my brain is mush on the trainer.  While watching Biggest Loser the other night on the trainer I wasn't able to remember any contestants names and tonight I had a hard time keeping track of who had the ball.  In my defense I am not much of a college ball fan but still.

So here's the plan - tomorrow while the girls are in PE I plan to give the elipitcal a try and hope my ITB doesn't start screaming at me.  They actually have a really good ballet tone class with lots of stretching so I'll do that after.  If all goes well on the elipitcal I'll give the treadmill a shot Saturday and maybe, just maybe I'll try to run outside for a short run Sunday.  What say you MG?  Sound like a plan?  I am open to suggestions.  I am balancing between off my ITB and feeling remotely ready for this half.

I'll ride to work in the really cold (like this morning), but it's a short ride, so I just wear longjohns under khakis, a fleece jacket and a shell over that, good warm hat under my helmet, and ski gloves.   If it's snowing, I'll wear ski goggles.  By the time I've covered the three miles there, even at near-zero degree temps, I'm sweating.  Except for my feet, which are like blocks of ice.

But on a day like today I wouldn't even consider a training ride.  Those are strictly for 20 plus degree days. On those days I'll wear a medium weight bottom layer under windproof-front bib tights (I like the way bibs make my lower back feel warmer) and a heavyweight, long-sleeve, full-zip jersey that's really more like a jacket with back pockets (again, windproof front).  Down around 20 I'll wear ski gloves, but above 30 I wear  neoprene winter cycling gloves.  Cheap neoprene over-booties I bought at Performance, and fairly thin Smartwool socks.  This may not seem like much clothing, but we have almost no humidity here, so 20 degrees just doesn't feel that cold.  The most expensive item was the jersey/jacket, but it has a fairly wide temperature range.  I've worn it comfortably over a synthetic t-shirt on 50 degree days.  I generally don't like anything on my face, but if it's down around 20 I'll sometimes wear a neck gaiter that I can pull up if my face gets really cold.

You don't have to spend a ton of money to keep warm, you just have to make sure that what you do buy has that front layer of windproof material.  I got my bibs, jacket, and underlayers at >50% off from Steepandcheap and Bonktown.
