Got in a nice ride/run today. NO GLOVES!!! YAY!

Photobucket

So anyone see a problem if I trade Thursday and Saturday rides? Do my long ride tomorrow and Thursday's ride this weekend? Trying to avoid being out too long on our "family" time.

Oh, and a side note:
My ride was down along the Ohio today. Right by where we are going to be swimming in a shade over 25 weeks.

So i'm 3 weeks into a 20 week Full-IM program and my body is so tired. My girlfriend thinks i'm insane and doesn't see the point in me doing an Ironman in the first place, so there goes some encouragement/motivation. I'm up at 5am for either a swim/bike/run and back by 7:30am to head to work by 9am. Work is over at 7pm and then session 2 until 9pm. I get back to the apartment and at this point my girlfriend is tapping her foot and wondering what the hell am i doing to myself. I took last night off to have an extra day of recuperation.

On a good note, 2300m swim tonight

How do you guys stay motivated all the way through? Everyone thinks I am crazy and there is no encouragement.

Hey - don't get burned out - 2-3 hours per day seems extreme this early on - that is like 16-20 hour weeks. You also dont want to lose your girlfriend over your training.
I completed IMCDA last summer on a max week of 15-16 hours. I completed race in 12+45. I have a wife and 4 very supportive kids - keep priorities in order for as long as possible.

So are there any University of Kentucky alums or fans on here?  I graduated in 97 (should have been 95).

As for the race group itself, I prefer that it is full of a wide variety of people that talk about the race and/or any subject for that matter.  I am sure that the closer we get to race day, the focus will be primarily on strategy.  We will all need support along the way, and it is good to have this group to bounce ideas and thoughts around.

you should never be afraid to move your schedule around especially when it comes to keeping family time.....as a 3X ironman finisher I believe you need to be very flexible in your ironman training!!  just my 2 cents.

Another interview is up on my blog. This time we see what Chris Sampley is about. He's one of those guys I find myself wondering, "What is he thinking?" I say this with all due respect.
Peace,
~Sam

P.S.
If you are new-ish to this thread and would be willing to answer the interview questions, I can send them to you, and I can post your thoughts as well. Let me know.

Nash - I am a U of L alum '06 (should have been 00' but went in the army first).  If it makes you feel any better I married a  01' UK grad!

Fesslern - I motivate myself by thinking that the pain now is only tempering my resolve to finish; not finishing will hurt more than anything that I can do to my body!  Also, I was worried about burnout so I opted to do the 20wk BT plan.  Currently I am just casually doing Base/conditioning W/Os till my plan kicks off end mar.  I am striving to be up to consistently 6 -8 hrs of training a wk when plan starts.

jhouse4 - Now I know why you post a pic of a badger, grouchy!.  Just kidding.  I respect that you are just throwing your 2 cents out there like the rest of us.  I personally enjoy the brevity that this string brings.  It is nice to comb thru these posts at the end of day and filter out my tri energy. God knows that if I talked to my co-workers about tri and IM as much as I think about it, they would stop answering my calls!

In my previous two IMs, I have tried to train with people as much as possible when I would start to burn out.  Make it a social event.  Also, on rest days I would not talk about triathlon at all.  My advice would be to make sure the intensity of your training is matched with the intensity of your recovery.  In my experience, training for an ironman can become pretty selfish...and you dont want to lose things that really matter.  Its tough to find the balance though!

Buckeye here....cant wait til March!

Are you racing IMKY??  It is still 28 weeks away.  3 weeks into a 20 week program leaves you a very long 11 week tapper

I am in a recovery week this week and my coach called for a 20 mile ez spinning bike ride. Today all the ice is finally melted off the roads and it is 60 degrees so I rode outside for the first time since October. I checked The Weather Channel app on my phone to check the temp before I left and there was a sever weather alert for my area, a wind advisory of 30+ mph winds with gusts up to 45 mph. They were right.

Needless to say, the easy spinning was not a problem when the wind was at my back, but 15 mph was a hard effort on the way back! So much for the recovery. Despite the weather I had a lot of fun, I love riding my bike outside!

Keep up the hard work and enjoy the journey!

Nice video Sam, you are a much better swimmer than I, I suffer from sagging hips in the water. I've been incorporating a few sets with a pull buoy to teach my body to be straight. I am also recovering from a running injury (ITBS) so I feel ya on the icing and rolling several times a day.

Question from IM first-timer for veterans about training plans...What is the best rest day/day off during the week?  (Mon, Fri, other.)  I'm reviewing several plans and it seems to vary.

I did my first half last year (Kansas 70.3) and my plan called for Fridays off.  This worked well and I felt good for the long ride and run over the weekend.  However, other full IM plans call for rest on Monday to recover from the long workouts.

what's the concensus?  Thank you.

- Louisville will be my first full Ironman.  Looking forward to smiling, laughing, digging, pushing, whining, bonking, puking...but most of all looking forward to finishing and crying.

Welcome regan! Are you doing Kansas again this year? I'll be there again - what a fun race.

I personally prefer Mondays to be my off days because the IM training volume on the weekends is so heavy. I like to do yoga or maybe take the dog on a long walk - if anything.

My current plan calls for Fridays off, which I don't mind now but I'll probably switch to Mondays off come April or May.

Regan,

Welcome! IM Louisville is my first as well.  My plan calls for Monday as the off day.  this works well given the high volumes over the weekend and my hectic work schedule on Mondays.

I can understand why some plans call for fridays off. A rest day right before a high volume weekend could be nice.

Happy training!

My plan has a rest day on Monday's and I really like. It gives me a chance of recovering from weekend. It also gives me a chance to load up a few extra hours at the office in case I need them later in the week.

I, too, take Monday as my rest day

Also, I do my long rides on Sunday (starting early in the am) and then do not work out again until my Tuesday late afternoon run & swim.  This gives me essentially two days off ~ from Sunday late afternoon until Tuesday late afternoon.  I find that it works perfectly.

Sometimes, deep into training, I will take Friday off as well

Hope you find what works for you ~ good luck!!

Cube- Interesting. Looking at it reminds me that I'm glad my coach types mine up and laminates it so I can stick it to the pool deck. There's just no way I would remember all that variance.
