Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() tashia153 - 2011-06-20 10:36 PM I had my son time me doing a 1/4 mile OWS yesterday. There were only small waves. I measured the distance between the docks and it was approximately 28 yards and I did 18 laps. My time was 15:40.....that I know is slooooowwwwww. Had a dream that I was in the tri and the swim went ok, then was the run which was ok, then I figured out I had forgotten my bike, helmet and shoes. Was frantically trying to get a phone to call my hubbie to bring my bike down. Running around the tranistion area begging folks for a phone. Guess I am alittle nervous but really ready to just do it. Linda Hi Linda! What a crazy dream! ^_^ I think you're ready too! Yeah, our forum members' recent swim times during their races are pretty impressive. I feel a bit slow myself but like you said, slow but steady. Over time we become better and faster swimmers! =) ~Roland |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() kloofyroland - 2011-06-20 1:32 PM I just had a thought. All of my workouts have been done after work (6-8pm). Since my race is coming up in about a month, should I start doing some workouts in the morning since the race is happening at that time? What's the difference? I remember reading a post about this somewhere but I can't remember where. >.< ~Roland Until now, I always worked out in the evening (I am a teacher). I did better at my races because I hadn't worked all day so I had energy for the morning. I think it's OK to work out in the evening, you just may want to throw in a few mornings. I never was able to and I did OK. Good luck! Joy |

I am torn between being nervous about my first tri coming up on this Sunday and really, really wanting to get one done so I have a starting point. I had my son time me doing a 1/4 mile OWS yesterday. There were only small waves. I measured the distance between the docks and it was approximately 28 yards and I did 18 laps. My time was 15:40.....that I know is slooooowwwwww. Thor would have finished his 1/2 mile before I was done with my 1/4 swim Had a dream that I was in the tri and the swim went ok, then was the run which was ok, then I figured out I had forgotten my bike, helmet and shoes. Was frantically trying to get a phone to call my hubbie to bring my bike down. Running around the tranistion area begging folks for a phone. Guess I am alittle nervous but really ready to just do it. Linda Yeah, Thor smoked the swim! I did great for me and it was by far my strongest discipline. You're putting in a lot of OWS time.....thats GOING to pay off - So I bet you do GREAT. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Okay thinking of doing a super sprint(1/3 mile swim, 9.3mile bike, 2.5mile run) tri July 1...2 weeks before my Oly...too much, too soon? Also curious what constitutes a sprint...Around here it seems like it is 1/2 mile swim, 13mile bike and 6.3 mile run... |

I have been in 3 sprints and getting ready to do my 4th. They have been anywhere from a 250-1000 meter swim. (Usually 750m if open water). 20K (or 12 mile bike), but one was 10.5 and another was 17 for me. And a 5k at the finish. I think it means it shorter than an Olympic distance. They are fun races and I have enjoyed them! I'm working my way to Olympic distance. Will do it next year! |

Eh, it's not that bad... I know it's swimming but are you fueling before you start the swim? i.e. did you take a gel? |

I just happened on this article - thought you might find it useful - talks about "training thru" your 'non-A' races. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=2303 |

I just happened on this article - thought you might find it useful - talks about "training thru" your 'non-A' races. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=2303 Just remember, if you are following a plan for your "A" race, you won't be peaking until 2-3 weeks before your race. So, all this other racing your doing, you won't be at your peak but it's always fun racing... Any additional volume for that training day can be done. I have my races, and I still have additional volume. E.g. lets say I have a sprint schedule in the morning, but my plan for that day calls for a 3 hour bike ride. Well, you know that it doesn't take 3 hours to complete the bike portion. So you do the sprint, and make up the additional volume later. However, this intensity is low. Don't go into z4 at all. Stay in high Z2 and Low Z3.... You don't want the additional stress on our bodies. With this, it is more like a recovery ride, and pumps blood through our body and helps facilitate the repair of our muscles by moving all the scar tissue.
Hope this helps!

I usually have a cliff bar or something like that on my way to the pool/gym, it takes me 40 mins to get there. Getting up early isn't so bad, its the staying up too late AND getting up early that makes me sleepy |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well for better or for worse I'm done until I race Sunday. Before the last race I only did about 12% of my swim volume, 6% of my bike volume and 25% of my running volume due to a stinger in my neck. This week I did about 75% of my swim volume, 57% of the bike and 30% of my normal running distance. Swim was masters with leaving early. The bike was all low intensity. My one run was a 6.15 mile tempo run. I felt in the last race I lacked that extra speed even though my heart rate was fine. Best tempo run in a long time. I felt really strong and at 8:30/mile and 154/bpm I felt like I had a lot more in me. My max bpm was only 166 as I was taking the hills painlessly. After Ashland nothing is really hilly, lol. Unconventional but it felt right so we'll see how it works out on race day. Stamford is less distance on all three disciplines to Ashland. .9 vs 1 mile on the swim. 24.8 vs 26 miles on the bike. 6.2 vs 6.5 on the run. By all accounts its also fairly flat where as Ashland was brutal. There is also no rain in the forecast and Ashland was soaked. There's no half mile wet hill to T1 out of the water. The only thing more challenging is this is an ocean swim and the pond at Ashland was awesome. It takes forever to get the salt water taste out of your mouth and the water will be colder. |

Sounds like a recipe for a good race! I've never done a tri with an ocean swim, so I'm anxious to hear your report. Good luck to ya! I've got a race this weekend as well, my first of the year. Although I'm pumped to finally race, the director made a substantial change to the bike course due a landslide a few weeks ago. I'm not terribly familiar with the area, but it sounds like the bike course went from hard to really, really hard with the new changes. We'll see how it goes! |

Are you ready? It's race weekend for you as well! I think so. I'm trying to go with the flow and not worry about the course changes, but I know I'm weak on the bike, especially with hills. The run's flat and shaded, though, so I hope to make up any time lost on the bike with a solid run. Either way, this race will be good prep for my HIM, which is the one I really care about. Who else is racing this weekend? |

All you early morning people! Grrrr, I better get my butt to sleep earlier so I can wake up early like you guys. @Scott, I ate half a Clif bar an hour before the swim and I was hydrating all morning. Should I have eaten the whole thing? If I had an after work long run, will getting a swim/bike workout the following morning do any harm? ~Roland |
