My race on Sunday is not providing racks - so I guess I have to go buy one or make one - transition area may be pretty interesting.
Due to the fact "my name is Brian and I have an overwhelming internet shopping addiction!" I found this recently on Huck and Roll. This may help you out for that race stopped at the LBS and picked up a nice rack for $35 - they were using them all over the store to hold bikes up - so I figured - good enough. The LBS was also selling plastic put together yourself kits (special for tris?) that fold up for $29 - though bulky, I think I got the better deal. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad to hear that you are doing well Ken. Good luck to those who are racing this weekend. I am signed up to do a century ride. I am not ready for it but I am going to give it a go. I am doing it by myself which I think I will enjoy in this case. I don't have to worry about keeping up with anyone or having to continually wait for others and if I end up needing to hitch a ride with the support crew then I can keep that a secret between me and them I hope everyone is enjoying the short work week.

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bdenehy - 2012-05-30 7:52 AM I'm racing Sunday and now questioning every tri-related decision I've made in the last 6 months :-). Like why didn't i pick a flatter HIM for the 1st goround? Supposedly there is 4,000 ft of climbing on the bike and 1,000 on the run... No time goals, just gonna take it slow and keep the heart from exploding. The other goal is to finish without looking like a zombie. This will be the first time the family comes to a race and they let your kids finish with you. Bill - Two of my favorite goals: 1. Keeping the heart from exploding2. Finishing without looking like a zombie! All the best to you and your race!! |

YOU ARE NOT ALONE! I like to think that it's just because us zombies leave it all on the course!
Got my mountain bike back last night! Found out my rear shock was completely blown and needed a rebound. That explains why I couldn't pick the back end up off the ground when bunny hopping that log that threw me over the bars in Brown County! |

I am not sure if I mentioned this, but both my doc and pt told me that a shoulder really reacts positively to icing. More than most other injured areas! Glad your mountain bike is fixed, now stay off it until after your race! |

Kathleen - are you doing the Elephant Rock? My hubby did the 100 mile tour last year and I was there with kids to cheer him on. It looks like a fun event - the course is pretty crowded but thins out after the metric century folks turn off - one thing - last year it was REALLY HOT (got in the 90's by the lunchtime) - however I don't remember the wind being too horrible. Steve forgot his Gu's at the hotel and had to live off the course. Unfortunately they only had Nunn's (beside gatorade/water) and he assumed they were similar to other GU type products - probably suffered a little more than normal because of it Have fun - look forward to hearing about it - I sure miss the front range! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm looking for advice from the equipment junkies/aeronuts in the group. Since I haven't bought anything in the last couple of minutes, I'm thinking about race wheels.... I don't think they would help me so much for my local hilly races. The stock wheels on my bike are 2010 Mavic Ksyrium Elites and they seem pretty good to me, and probably lighter than most deep rim carbon wheels. But IMAZ got me thinking about wind vs. weight and I'm tempted to make the switch. This year I'll do one flat HIM and one flat IM (if i stay healthy through November). I'm not at all ready to drop $1,500-$2,000 on new Zipps or the like, so I looked into rentals and the direct-from-China nonbranded wheels. For about the same price as renting wheels twice, I could get some 60mm carbon race wheels (before new tires, etc) for my very own. So who's made the switch to racewheels? Happy? Do you train on your racewheel? My other question on wheels is on spoke count. The high end wheels seem to have low spoke counts. The cheapies that I'm looking at have 20 spokes on the front and 24 on the rear (same as my stock wheels). from what I've read, extra spokes can negate lots of the benefit of deep rims. Thoughts? As always, thanks for any of your insights. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() bdenehy - 2012-05-31 6:24 PM Bill, I use race wheels. I have a He'd Jet 90 which is also my power tap power meter on the back. The bike came with a set of Aeolus wheels and I will use the front for races or my He'd 3 spoke. Before my injury I was considering selling my He'd wheels, installing a Quarq power meter and training on the Aeolus wheels and picking up aa disc for the back for race days. The aeolus wheels would work fine on hillier races and the disc would cover the rest. That said, I did my first IM on the stock Bontrager wheels that came with the bike. The 2nd one I had upgraded to a DT Swiss wheel with a wired PT and a disc cover. The biggest reason I was going to go one more step was because I knew most of my IMs were probably going to be Florida, and my sprints are flat. Those discs really sound sweet! My suggestion to you Bill is to go to wheel builder.com, order a wheel cover for probably less than $100.00. I think your wheel is a stock cover for them. Take the balance of what you were going o spend and get an aero helmet. I'm looking for advice from the equipment junkies/aeronuts in the group. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Ken. I'm definately going for the aero helmet. I looked into wheelbuilder but they specifically name my bike (a kestrel 4000) as incompatible with their covers because of a narrow chainstay or something. I'll give them a call though since i like the versatility aspect and cost savings. Power meters, thats next years upgrade. Since i know I'm fickle and will probable chage my mind on everything (not just wheels) i"m waiting for the Vector pedal based meters to come out. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Bill I bought my deep wheels last season. For me, I live in a pretty flat area so they made sense to me. I debated on all the normal things, how deep, carbon/non carbon, clincher/tubular. I decided I wanted to race and train with a powermeter so I went with Hed clinchers. To me the biggest difference is once you get over 20mph. The wheels really make it easier to hold that speed. Especially at 22 I can feel it. I went with 90mm rear and got a 60 and a 90 front. I mostly use the 90 front. But there are some windy days here I wish I had the 60 on. The Hed wheels are basically a regular alloy rim with a carbon fairing so climbs are nice on them. They are just as stiff as regular rims. Just a little heavier. Spoke count really depends on your weight from what I understand. Heavier people need higher spoke count wheels. There are other wheels that are IMO just about as good as the zipps and Heds at a fraction of the cost. I've heard good things on the Reynolds dvks and they have been coming up on chainlove for $799! There's really a lot to think about with wheels. I'm sure you'll have more questions as you make your decision. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey there Ken et al. I was in the past two of Ken's mentor groups - just wanted to drop in and see what was up. My first race of the season is this sunday in Rock Hall, Maryland. Water temp is currently 79, just above wet suit legal. The forecast calls for a drop in outside air temp and some rain, so I'm taking one with me just in case. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! |
