QUOTE]cdban66 - 2012-08-10 12:52 PM Thank you very much! You answered another question I had, before I even asked it. OK, now I have a question for Kirsten. In your race report (also read multiple times) you mentioned feeling nauseated during the run. And a couple of nutrtion items during the run. Did you figure out where the nauseated came from? And/or did you get it settled? You also mentioned neck soreness on the bike. Was it the rough road, or bike positioning, or something else?

The nausea was heart rate related--if I got my HR above about 145-150, I was nauseated.  I suspect it was some dehydration (I only pee'd once during the race--and no, not on the bike )--although I drank a bit more than I had figured I needed, it was warmer than I had trained at.  Neck soreness= handlebars too wide + very rough roads + poor head position (I try to look too far ahead of myself--hmmm, that may be figuratively as well as literally...)

Chris, It's definitely good to be asking about what has worked and what has not worked for other people. But just be careful to create your own hydration and nutrition plan through trial and error in training. This is going to be one of the things that is extremely unique to each individual.

Great point.  I did a ton of research--both reading and training related.

OK, so I am comparing the BT HIM plan to the Fink plan as some of you had mentioned.  I have some questions for those of you that used the (modified) fink plan for HIM.

I see that the HIM race is in week 22. Did you follow the plan as such for 22 weeks?

I don't see much of a taper for the HIM.  Did you do more of a taper?

I remember some of you said you thought the FINK plan was light in some areas.  Which were those? I see the run "only" gets up to 1:45.

Thanks for the guidance for this HIM newb...

A TRAINING QUESTION?!

I've never followed any plan "as such" Tongue out

Whether one should follow all 22 weeks depends on what kind of a base you're starting out with and for how long you've been at that level (or how long it took you to get there).

It doesn't really include a taper, and to be honest you don't need much of one for a HIM, especially for the swim, somewhat for the bike, more so for the run. Taper's actually one of those things best decided as one gets closer to the date depending on the actual training one's done.

Fink plan is definitely light on swimming and I really do not like the way he structures his suggested swim workouts.

The running is just fine to get you through the HIM run, and the length of the longest run isn't really relevant. In fact, I'm considering never going over 2:00 or so even for the IM marathon.

I basically follow plans because I don't know any different Undecided. However I (usually) don't stress if I miss a day or decide to cut something a bit short.

I think I like the idea of 22 weeks because I have several weeks between my OLY and when I would start a 20 week plan for the HIM.

I did wonder about the "flat" nature of his swim workouts. Maybe I'll follow the BT plan (incorporating some Sheila T work) for those.  I like having the "canned" plan in BT tho.  I like how the planned vs. actual graphs work and I like getting the email at 9:15 every evening telling me what to do the next day.

I'm somewhat following Fink's plan for my HIM, of course I picked it up in week 7 and I do all my swims based on the workout given in my masters swim. Also, my long runs are a bit longer then the plan. So, actually, I guess I'm not following it much at all! Never mind

Asalzwed - 2012-08-11 3:43 AM Sometimes my job feels like Legos. Digital Legos

Is that good or bad?

So good! Them being digital even means that you don't get the negative effects of Legos (stepping on them in bare feet)

This is my model I'm working on.

TOYS!!!!!!!!!!

Virtual toys, very cool!

That's really why I loved studying chem and bio ... it was like getting to play with the coolest of cool toys all the time, including manipulating DNA.

What's interesting about MY toys is that from school and now like 6 years into my career we have gone from mostly by hand to almost exclusively computer. I was lucky enough to have been trained in both.

Chem, Bio has much more expensive toys. I could NEVER be trusted

I could totally see you blowing stuff up for Mythbusters.

Great. And this is feedback by the only person who has actually met me in person on BT.

That was a compliment!

Ohhhh well then! Thank you! And honestly, you are right. I'd love that job. We are just solidifying Yanti's observation of me being a train wreck.

Yes, and reading! Nutrition is tough.

Reading "Racing Weight" changed my life.

HMMM so interesting no one seems to have a problem with cockiness!!!

What thinks you about Kanye West? Smile

I'm not a fan of cockiness, even if u can back it up, and I can't stand Kane west (which, I guess, is not surprising).

Oooooh callin' him Kane! You so old school!

Or, my iPad autocorrects, but old schools sounds better; so let's go with that.

bcraht - 2012-08-11 4:43 AM Yanti (or whomever), what is the purpose of the Long Dog swimming drill?

FORGET YOU EVER READ LONG DOG!

Competition Doggypaddle all the way.

Either way, the point of the drill is to focus on the pull phase without worrying about recovery.

Long Dog purports also to help swimmers not cross the midline (either during the reach or the pull), but Competition Doggypaddle does this better.

Long Dog also purports to build a strong finish to the stroke (push phase) except that's not only been demonstrated to be false and counterproductive; logically, finishing the stroke "long" (as far as you can move your hand back) means that you can only push water UP and therefore your body DOWN (when you want it to go FORWARD). It's better to get your hand back out of the water at about the hip and back around as quickly as possible to the workhorse pull.

We did a competiton doggy paddle at the bachelorette party a couple weeks ago in the hotel pool.

I should have logged that!

I actually exclusively doggy paddled until about high school then transitioned to a doggy paddle with breast stroke kick then exclusive breast stroke.

I don't know why I was always so scared of the free. Is this typical?

By exclusive breast stroke, does that mean with your face/head in the water?

Some people just really don't like having their faces in the water.

Even if so, freestyle is inherently unbalancing (or it seems so, anyway). You're constantly rotating back and forth on the midline axis, and you can't see forward.

Head in the water if I was trying to get places more quickly (you know, like to the shore to fetch my clothes.) Or, when I would lap swim with my SO at the time but all other times head above water for the reason stated above.

I didn't like getting my head wet at all though. I would go as far as to splay my arms and legs when I went cliff jumping so my head wouldn't go under water. I still have that bad habit. I've jumped at high as 25 feet without my head going under. Hurts like a mofo though.

I was a weird kid.

The Olympics closing ceremony is less than TWO HOURS after the last event finishes.

How are the female pentathletes supposed to get back to the Athletes Village, recover/shower/change/eat and get back to the stadium in time?

I guess they're athletes, and pentathletes ... used to going very quickly from one event to another!

Go Felicia !!!

And Ben too, right?

Yes. He's been on antibiotics all week, but I think he is good to go now. We practiced transitions last night and I emphasized that this is supposed to be fun.
Go Ben and Felicia. Have a great time. Are you racing together or seperate?

I'm not sure I know how to answer that. At first, I wanted to say "separate," but that might imply that we would be able to watch each other race, so we are racing "together," but we start had vastly different times, so we won't be "together" . . . you see my problem.

The adults start. It's a pool swim, so we start by time. After all of the adults have finished swimming, they will start the kids -- the estimate is that the kids will start 45 minutes after the adults started. That puts me maybe 20-30 minutes ahead of him on the course?

The bike is a 2.5 mile loop (closed, thankfully, since kiddos are doing it). Adults do it 5 times, kids do it 2 times. So, will I be finished on the bike before he gets out there? I certainly hope so, but I might not be. So I might see him on the bike.

Adults run a 5k; kids run 1 mile, on different trails. So I won't see him on the run, except maybe from a distance.

What I am hoping is that I will be very fast (and this is my motivation), so that I can get to the run finish in time to cheer him in. I want to see my boy racing, and I'm a little bummed now that I'm racing, too, even though this is a race I've wanted to do for over a year -- it's 30 minutes from our house, which is super close, compared to every other race I do.

So you have 7.5 miles on the bike and 2.1 miles on the run to spread out that 30 minute advantage. I think you can do it!

I agree with Salty. And you might see each other at times on the loops, but you'll probably be finishing the bike as he is heading out. Or you may be a bit further along. I am going to guess that you will be cheering on his finish.

GO BEN!!!!!

I feel better.

I think that means I don't feel outright lousy for the first time in a few days.

Someone tell me that does NOT mean I ought to go swimming in two hours.

So cool that you will even be on the same course!  Good luck Felicia and Ben!!  I am running a nighttime 5k with my nephew this fall--I am looking forward to it more than any of my other races!

DO NOT GO SWIMMING IN TWO HOURS.  DO NOT GO SWIMMING IN FOUR HOURS.  DO NOT GO SWIMMING UNTIL YOU FEEL BETTER.  OR AT LEAST UNTIL YOU FEEL AS GOOD AS YOU DID BEFORE THIS MOST RECENT FEVER.

Two of my friends (twins, actually) are doing the same tri as I am next weekend! I'm really excited to be on the same course. There are a few out and back portion so I imagine I'll see them a few times.

They had joked about doing the bike portion on a tandem. Of course I strongly encouraged them to go for it.
