New user 42 Sumter, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Looks like some unplanned rest and recovery for me... The flu has found it's way to our house so I'm down. I got 4 workouts in before I got sick so that's good, and my main concern is getting back to 100% by the 28th for my half marathon. I should only miss 1 important run workout and luckily have several no-run days between today and Tuesday so I'm hoping this won't hurt my race fitness. On a brighter note, I've got permission from the boss (aka the wifey) to buy a tri-bike (as long as I don't spend more than $1200) so I can spend the time in bed shopping for a deal!! |

Get fit first. Until you get fit, you're just whistling in the dark. Sure, most modern bikes can be adapted to most fit positions, but I hate seeing smooth, sleek, aero lines interrupted by 5cm of stack spacers. When I got fit two years ago, I compared the Specialized Shiv, a Kestral 4000, a Quinatana Roo CD.01, and the Felt B2. To get to optimum for me, two of the four would require a substancial (>2cm) stack and reach adjustment, whereas the Felt took almost none. Price-point with similar components was all pretty similar. Most good shops will credit you the fit cost toward the bike purchase as well. Or go buy the package deal from Nytro if you also need a wetsuit, helmet, shoes, etc. It's a pretty good deal. |

First question, what are you riding now? What races are you planning on doing? I am only asking because most of the time you can get away with a good road bike which will allow more flexibility. Either way Charles is bang on with going for fit first(well budget first but...)

New user 42 Sumter, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Yep.. I currently have a road bike and have been fit and have all my measurements. I've been cycling for a long time but need to spend more time aero to make my target HIM times this year and IM times next year. Was going to modify my roadie, but love the fit and the more I tried to get comfortable in the aero with it the more I was going to have to swap out seatpost and stem and make riding it as a road bike with a group pretty impossible, so I'm going to buy a second bike. I've done lot's geometry work and know where my "fit windows" are for effective top tube and seat tube lengths so I'm pretty confident I can find one that fits. If money wasn't an issue I'd go new and let the bike shop take on the risks, but with a budget of $1200 I have to do all the leg work and find a used one that fits. |

Hope it's better soon enough... Congrats though on getting the budget approved for a tri bike! My wife is in denial about how much they cost, and worse, she's definitely getting one before I do - she's got the entry level aluminum roadie, and I've got the (9 year old) full carbon/ultegra.... I'ma have to make it last another 9 years at this rate :D Thor - grats on the pounds dropping off! Edited by firebert 2015-02-12 10:59 AM |

21 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Sadly, the beer preferences were part of what I forgot to edit before I pressed post. I am mostly an IPA girl, but I am willing to try anything I get my hands on. And. I have sad news, I will not be able to workout tomorrow, I will spend the entire day at a work event. As I can't get my hands on Coors and either way is off beer for a few more months, so I am thinking of what would be a better punishment. I am thinking of maybe doing some planks or push ups at home over the weekend |

So I didnt win the 80 dollar purse to put towards a new bike jersey, having said that I think the design and look is getting better and better. I am in for one, whenever we can get together an order and get that all figured, let me know. That's awesome, nice work! |

2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business So I am feeling slightly better from whatever it is that I had. I think maybe it's something sinus related, so I need to really just schedule an appointment to get some flonase or something, but we will see how soon I get to that. I did do a little HIIT workout this morning, and although I didn't feel wonderful, I'm glad I got it in. I'm going to attempt to swim this evening and see if that is any better. |

Member 3145 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Big day over here...2:25pm and I just sat down for the first time after three awesome workouts this morning and then teaching. I'm stupid tired (i.e. so tired I'm stupid--likely evidenced in my class!). Anyway, this morning I went for my normal Thursday Spin class and was planning a brick run afterwards (which I got in, so this week's challenge is complete). On my way back to the locker room I noticed the pool was completely empty--16 glorious lanes all to myself! Let's ignore the fact that I can only use one lane at a time... Jumped in for a quick 1200yds. It wasn't until I was on my way into work that I realized I did a triathlon today...before work. (55/400) |

My music is a huge variety. Magnum Theme Song - Celvin Rotane Rio & Hungry Like a Wolf - Duran Duran Single Ladies - Beyonce Trouble Maker - Olly Murs Little Talks - Of Monsters and Men Why Can't I Be You - Cure Jump Jive and Wail - Brian Setzer Orchestra Walk of Life - Dire Straits Sexy and I Know It - LMAO Soak Up the Sun - Sheryl Crow What Makes you Beautiful - One Direction Tom Sawyer & Limelight & Marathon - Rush There are so many others I'm missing - like Abhainn A'Nathair by the Peatbog Faeries. LOL i have been given permission to try a little run/walk to check the knee. Actually I'm nervous about this, but I'll give it a go - it will have to be on the treadmill as it's snowing yet again.. Cheers all! Had a Kettle One dirty martini on the rocks last night....sorry, no beer last night. Edited by aviatrix802 2015-02-12 2:56 PM |

38 Arlington, Virginia | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Hey y'all! I'm coming in a bit late, but I'm really excited there's a group of folks who train AND indulge in hops! NAME: Mel, 25 STORY: Overweight since I can remember, due to poor diet, mostly. Very athletic in my childhood and early teen years, and swam competitively for 8 years. A knee injury my sophomore year of HS stopped all exercise flat for a long time, and I steadily gained weight until 2013. Lost about 50 lbs with diet and exercise, and plateaued in grad school as academics took over. I started swimming back in early January as a fun, low impact way to get some exercise, and realized very quickly that smoking was making it impossible to swim with good form/endurance. I quit smoking about two weeks ago, and as a goal and motivator I decided to train for a sprint. I have no experience road biking and can't currently run more than half a mile. I can swim about 2700 yds (1.5 miles), but I don't have the endurance to go more than a few hundred yards without pausing for breath. I'm very focused on nutrition, endurance, building strength, and getting to the finish line, any weight loss along the way is just icing on the cake. FAMILY STATUS: Single CURRENT TRAINING: The 22 week sprint tri training plan, which I officially start next week. Been following the workouts this week though, and it's been great! 2014 RACES: None, bring on 2015! RACES PLANNED FOR 15: Other than meets during my time as a competitive swimmer, I've never done a race before! I will soon be signing up for an Iron Girl in Columbia, MD on August 16. BEER PREFERENCE: I'm a porter girl through and through. I also love IPAs and red ales, and I'm looking forward to the summer so I can knock back a few Hell or High Watermelons. WEIGHT LOSS: In 2013 I lost about 50 lbs, and I've gained 15 lbs or so back through grad school. Trying to stay focused on fitness and endurance improvements rather than weight loss this time around. |

189 Quakertown, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Checking in: 3/? Did 8.5 miles easy stationary bike ride today followed by 2.5 miles running intervals. Strange how everything feels fine until you step on the treadmill and then the aches start. My muscles were acting like my kids not wanting to go to school....it's like they knew what was coming. I didn't let them get off easy. This Sunday looks like a high of 12 and a low of 0. I like to run on Sundays.....this could be very interesting. I do have some gear, but I've only ever used it down to the low twenties. Time to see how good it is I guess. So I have a question for the non-newbies. The tri that i'm training for isn't until August. I may do a practice run in June though. How often do the forums on this site reset? Will we be in here for the entire year, or does it reset after the spring? -Snewo |

14 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Greetings. Thanks for letting me join! Tonight i swam a mile then ran/walked 4. I am still a run/walker....not sure if i will ever be a runner. I cannot wait until spring though...i get dizzy running on the indoor track (14 laps per mile)... but it is better than the dreadmill. Spring means daylight after work! My daughter start 2x a week 90 minute soccer practice which is like golden training time for me since the fields are at our rec center with indoor pool, trails, and weight room. March i start my morning masters program....it is going to be a good year! Anne |

Expert 1051 Bradenton, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Open For Business Finished my 4th workout of the week and completed the Gretchen challenge. I put in 2150 yds. in the pool for my 2nd swim of the week. Even though statistically the swim is my best discipline come race day (top 30%) it is the one I dislike the most. I caved into the peer pressure and signed up for MyFitnessPal, my user name is cwpeters2001. I'm still playing around with it, and will try to add you guys tomorrow. DQ - love the topic of music. I have very strong opinions on when it is and isn't appropriate. ALWAYS in the pool. I use the SwiMp3 whenever I'm swimming laps. It keeps me from going insane trying to count the tiles in the black stripe. NEVER in open water. Between boats, jet skis, tourists, and life guards you can't let yourself get distracted. ALWAYS on a solo run, but volume has to be low enough to hear traffic. NEVER on the bike unless it's on the trainer. There is simply too much going on around you that you have to react quickly to. NEVER in a triathlon because it's against the rules. 5k's, 10k's, half and full marathons depends on why or who I'm running with. If I'm trying to PR, music is a must. If I'm running with a friend, I leave it at home. As for the playlist, I'm a Jimmy Buffett, Jack Johnson type of guy on the LSD workouts and a Metallica, Aerosmith, Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine type on intervals and speed work days. Sandi - So glad to hear things are improving and will continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Your attitude is amazing and truly inspirational. For all of you that are sick, please keep those germs to yourself. I was feeling fine until I read all your updates. Now I feel like I'm coming down with something. Seriously though, take care of yourself, don't try to push through if you're not feeling it. That's when technique breaks down and you end up injuring yourself. Get well then train well. Welcome to the new people. Jump in and try to hang on, this group moves fast. Chris |

How to add friends by user ID on MFP: 1) Click the "COMMUNITY" button on the top row 2) Click "Find Members" on the second row 3) Type in the username in the appropriate box and click "Search" 4) Click "Add as friend" to send friend request. How to use MFP (or, rather, how I use MFP): The first step is to set up your your nutrition setting, which you can do in one of two ways: (1) guided or (2) custom. I prefer custom since the protein figures the guided profile spits out are too low for anyone doing anything resembling training. MFP's website is somewhat disorganized, so I am just going to provide links to what you need. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/my_goalsand click "Change goals". You can then pick guided or custom. Guided is pretty self-explanatory. Custom lets you fiddle with the numbers as much as you like. For me, at 6'2", 200lbs, with a goal weight of 160 (my goal is to get stupid light this year, for cycling), my goal calories are 1,700, with 50% carbs, 25% protein, and 25% fat. Those numbers put me at a little over 100g of protein daily, which is a good figure for someone athletic. Realistically, so long as you don't have kidney problems, there is no limit to protein intake; too much is good, too little is very bad. I'll leave ketosis and ketogenic diets for another discussion. I leave most of the other stuff alone - but I don't have any specific health problems either. Adjust fat, cholesterol, sodium, etc., as you might need. The fitness goals section is irrelevant. It has no impact on how your calories are calculated at this stage. ******************** How MFP works: Base Calories + Workout Calories - Food Calories = Calories Remaining. Stated another way, what goes in less what goes out. Today, I take my 1,700 base, less 316 calories for breakfast, means I have 1,384 left for the day. I'll hit the gym later, and lets say I burn 600 calories, so my 1,384 will increase to 1,984, and then I'll add lunch, etc., and the number will go back down. The point is to stay in the green. Yesterday, 1,700 base calories plus a bike session and hot yoga for 1,126 yields 2,826 goal calories, less the 2,661 I ate (post yoga pizza and beer) yields 165 green calories - at or near my goal for the day. The more you workout, the more you can eat. ***************** Other notes; the MFP food database is stupidly huge, and there's a fair amount of junk in it, like stuff where the user didn't put in the protein or other specifics, but just calories; be careful about that. The bar code scanner is a nifty tool if you have the app on your phone. You can also set the app to remind you to log in, and it will track your streaks. I have seen over 200 days continuous twice, and once the streak gets big, that alone becomes a motivator. Also, be sure to re-check your goals, since your weight changes are *not* automatically accounted-for; I will adjust my goals every 5lbs. Another cool feature is that you can copy meals from friends (i.e., my wife inputs dinner and I just copy it from hers), and save pre-set meals, and make custom recipes and save them, or add in foods that aren't in the database (I don't think there are any that are not in the database right now). If you can't find your exact meal, you can probably find something close enough. |
