462 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Sorry to hear about the truck. I just picked up my new 1999 accord to save on gas driving to and from work now. Got in my longest bike of my return to glory 1:45 with a 15 run after. Tomorrow is the long run 1:15 then 60 min 100+ rpm. What are everyone's goals for the coming week? How did you do this week? I just wanted to make it though this week and did. between my grandmother and an incident at work which made national headlines (luckily only for a short time) it has been a rough one. Next week my goal is to get my swimming recorded so i can see why I am sooooo sloooooooow. Also to make it to the pool with the water rescue team from the fire dept. Their coach has offered to let me jump in with them and coach me for free. Well not really free as the city pays him but it won't cost me anything even the entry to the pool is free. |

New user 669 Madrid | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Great week so far: today 1h bike and then 1.20 run - tomorrow 2.45 bike and 30 min brick run. But somedays I have the feeling my running is going backwards when looking at my times.... Next week traveling to L.A. on Tuesday and back on Friday, hope to get some nice runs in sunny California!! 37 ROTHESAY, New Brunswick | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Sounds like everyone is doing fairly well, some ups and downs with life, but getting those workouts in. Way to go. This week didn't go as planned, worked sked changed, and weather changed and screwed up some workouts. Only got to the pool once, a 2600m swim that I just wasn't in to. Still swimming 1:45/100m on average. Only one run so far, hill repeats in the wee hours of the morning. 15km run tomorrow to end off the week. I did get in 5 bike rides on the trainer on Zwift, for 141km. I'm on the road all next week, so it will be a run heavy week. The weather is supposed to finally get above freezing next week and stay there, can't wait to ride outside again, Zwift is nice, and it helps, but I find it hard riding inside for more than 90mins, and I'm at the point now where my long rides should be in the 2-3hr range. Come on spring. So as I type this I have a glass of Cabernet sitting next to me. I will take a CL penalty for not getting to the pool as much as I wanted, and will have a CL tomorrow in NY. I have a trip to White Plains NY tomorrow until Wed. Hoping to hit the trails in the Tarrytown area for some good running. Have a good week folks Cheers Terry |

1941 , Vermont | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Trust the plan, Juan! hahaha, but I know what you mean! Terry, way to adjust to the changes! Nice swim time by the way! Scott, I'm asking myself the same thing about my swim. I've been on a year-long plateau it feels like. Finished the week up on plan (minus the hiccup last Wednesday when I needed 2 of me to get through the day). We skied all day today and when we got home I just wanted to go to bed but had to make bread with my son for his school (King Arthur Flour is in VT and they give 5th graders two 2 pound bags of flour, yeast, a dough scraper, and directions on how to make bread, rolls, cinnamon buns, etc with the stipulation that they make at least a loaf of bread or bag of rolls to bring back to school to go to the local food shelf). It's really a great thing - quite the donation on King Arthur company's part and great for the kids to get involved like this. We made a few loaves of bread and both boys and I have already almost finished a loaf off! Soooo good. Anyway I was going to bag my hour long run today but my hubby said, "awe, just go do, I'm here today and can hold off on grilling dinner for a bit." So I got my butt in gear and got it done! I am so happy I can just take tomorrow as a true rest day...(with a visit to the PT).. I still feel like my plan doesn't have enough swimming - I only go 2 days/week. Running is right up there - 3 regular days all at 1 hour runs and a shorter run in there as part of a brick. Running-wise I am definitely better than last summer! Last week I did find out that my local gym offers a triathlon training group for swimming!!! Happy dance!! It costs a bit extra but the coach is a former tri coach and swim coach - lots of years of experience so I think I'll take advantage of this! I hope everyone is doing well!!! |

Expert 1662 Spokane, WA | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open 9.5 miles down today in a little over an hour and a half. This felt mostly comfortable, which was quite a bit different from last Wednesdays run that I ended walking half of. I ate two slices of wheat toast with jelly prior to running today. This is a great pre run fuel for me. I also took my water pack and took sips twice a mile. Overall I felt great for this being my new long run distance. Next week, I'm going to back off (recovery week) with only 14 miles total run. Then I'm going to repeat this weeks mileage total (20) the following week before building the next 2 weeks. Next weeks goals: Work on pace during shorter runs run 3x keep losing weight while eating healthy. |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Happy Monday everyone!!! Ok--that was all the excitement I could muster. #92--45 min trainer ride this morning followed by 15 minutes of yoga. I jumped up to the intermediate series in my phone yoga app, and I can tell a huge difference. I fall a lot more doing the intermediate stuff than I did when I was working in the beginner series! Went truck shopping on Saturday. Ugh--didn't find anything I wanted to buy. Of course, my heart wasn't in it at all because I really don't want to give up my old Explorer, but I will have to soon anyway. Oh, and I remembered how much I hate car shopping! All week I ate 3500-4000 calories a day. It was hard, but I figured it out by eating much more often than I did in the past. Every 2-2.5 hours while I'm awake I have something to eat and by the end of the night I am pretty close. I also adopted the "breakfast like a king" concept, eating about three times what I used to eat for breakfast. One week into the experiment and I lost 6lbs. I'm interested to see what this next week brings. I committed to doing this for at least two weeks to see what would happen. Thanks to everyone for their advice on how to increase calorie intake!! 2126 Baltimore, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Had a good weekend but am feeling it today! I went to my gym workouts both days this weekend and again this morning. Saturday I swam a little after my swim lesson to loosen up my arms, but they were so wiped from my gym workout that I didn't last very long. I'm on week 3 at this gym (1 more to go after this), and from there I will not be crushing my arms and legs at this gym as much so will start really focusing on swimming. Sunday they started this recovery class with foam rolling and it was really nice to experience. I have a foam roller but don't use it and I definitely need to. It actually made a huge difference today! Goals for this week: Do something active every day (I might also start walking to/from work now that it's supposed to be so nice out!) Focus on eating healthy - maybe start tracking my meals in MFP again...I've not lost any weight, and although I know it's b/c I'm building muscle so quickly, I still think I should be losing at least a little. Foam roll at least 3 times this week Happy Monday, everyone! |

I think I might get a breakfast burrito to celebrate you weight loss ;-) Nicole- I started the foam roller too and have found such a difference especially on my troublesome left calf! Kevin- Nice bump on the running! I am planning on two runs this week prior to my 5k on Saturday. I'm not super well trained for it-but that's why I put one on my calendar now- to remind me I need to get with the program. I'm hoping to be at or under 30- but we'll see. I also need to get back to master's this week and play on my new mtn bike. One more week til daylight savings!!!! |

Expert 4926 Middle River, Maryland | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Friday night was a pathetic mile swim - had nothing in the pool - followed by a similarly pathetic weight session. Saturday morning was 30 min spin bike, 1 mile on the TM, and then my leg ST session. I had planned on a cool down swim but The Daughter got done early at swim practice, so off to Panera we went!!! Sunday off day minus a quick walk around the neighborhood, today was 90' Z2 on the trainer while watching the Prologue TT Paris-Nice stage race. It's only like 4 miles long - eegads that must be painful. Headed to Nashville this evening. Looks like the weather is breaking here in the mid-Atlantic; we're looking mid-70s by Wednesday! Woo hoo!! |

Member 3147 Carbondale, Illinois | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Originally posted by Moonrocket Ooh forgot to add- Jenn I have been wanting to try making bread- but am totally intimidated. Do you have a recipe or tips for a first timer? I make all the bread we eat in our house. I started in 2006 after I went to Jordan for six weeks and came home to find a loaf of bread I had bought just before I left on the counter, in pristine condition. I gotta figure the quantity of preservatives in that would not be beneficial to your overall health. I make about two loaves a week, sometimes three. My #1 suggestion is to get a bread machine! Seriously, if you are really interested in making bread, invest in a good 2lb machine. I only rarely cook the bread in the machine, but I use it all the time to do the mixing and timing the rise cycles. I just drop the ingredients into the machine and walk away for about three hours. When I come back it is ready to shape and proof, then bake. Really takes the difficulty out of making bread! Tips for non-bread machine baking: 1.) you can never knead too much. Kneading is where you develop the gluten structure in the bread, which is what makes it chewy. 2.) recipes with egg/butter/oil/some form of fat will last longer. If the recipe doesn't have any fat in it, the bread will go stale very, very quickly (like overnight) 3.) Most dough can be made in large batches and then divided and either refrigerated for baking later in the week or frozen for much later use. This increases the bread:labor ratio. 4.) Don't skimp on or skip the salt, but put it in the dough after the yeast begins to rise. Salt and yeast sometimes don't mix well and it is better to avoid letting the two of them argue in your bread. |

1007 DeLand, Florida | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Should have revised my goals for last week - between the wife home recovering from surgery and her coming down with some kind of flu, I had to be 'single parent' more than expected. I don't honestly know how real single parents do it, and still train. I had a few days of being like 80% of the parental units and fell apart - lol. Got my runs in last week and my Wednesday swim. The big news is my long run Saturday - 13 miles done! Less than two weeks until my first HM. I'm both excited and nervous, which is as to be expected. Nothing like the nerves before my first (and second) Tri though! What's the worst that can happen in an HM, not finishing before the 3 hour cutoff? Unless there's an injury I'll be in no danger of that... Really the biggest worry is not hitting my self imposed time goal, which I know I am not supposed to do for a first of anything. It is getting warm out there already in what is a far cry from last winter! I gotta get my bike shifting again! |

I don't honestly know how real single parents do it, and still train. I had a few days of being like 80% of the parental units and fell apart - lol. First, I hope your wife is recovering okay!!! Coming home from surgery is tough enough aside from getting the flu! This is me every week (hubby travels every week) so I know what you're going through - hang in there. Today was a rough one even though it was a "rest" day I still had to teach and go to PT and I am sore from PT now. I didn't like my class as much today - just didn't feel as "on it" teaching; wiped out I think from a long and very busy weekend (fun but while everyone else relaxed I still had the usual mommy and house stuff to do). I had to explain to my boys tonight that I had a tough day and to bear with me, hahaha. We all have them! My student has his checkride set up this week to become a flight instructor - a big deal. I have to finish him up in the next two days and the weather is pew. I'm a wreck for him. His oral exam will be 6 hours long and the flight, probably 2.5 hours long.. He's been waiting for this ride since before Christmas....talk about trying to stay peaked for almost 3 months. He's a sharp kid, though, so if anyone can pull it off, I think he can. Back at it tomorrow with a swim and I think a bike (an hour at 100+ rpm I believe). I'm thinking of maybe trying the Master's swim class tomorrow late morning group. I am nervous to join (I can be shy like that) and think that maybe I need to get in better swim shape...I'm hoping they'll have a slow lane for newbies. We'll see what happens - I have a lot to prepare for class on Wednesday so I need to plan carefully. Edited by aviatrix802 2016-03-07 8:55 PM |

Do you have a recipie or tips for a first timer? I do, actually! King Arthur Flour company gave us a recipe booklet for the kids to follow and my 10 year old did a great job and the boys couldn't stop eating the bread! We made it yesterday evening and a loaf is already completely gone! I can PM you the recipe through your inbox here so I don't take up a bunch of space on this group site. ~ I may have to wait until tomorrow - it's late and I'm heading to bed! Cheers! 193 , California | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open Successfully hit my goals for last week after rearranging the schedule to account for being a single dad foe the weekend. Week 4 of 16 week Olympic plan is complete. Forgot to get my goals for the week posted. 1- complete all workouts in week 5 2- 2x yoga 3- 3-4x core 4- stretch more Btw I forget who posted the "Around the World" core circuit last month but thanks again! Really is quick but tough. Perfect to fit in without investing a lot of time in a strength session. This morning was a 1300m swim before work, in the rain. Always fun when it rains on swim day rather than bike day! Tomorrow morning will be short hill repeats on the bike before work. My earliest wakeup/hardest day of the week. -Matt |

423 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society (BDAS) - Open It's been awhile since I've been on here but things have been super busy lately. First race is in 3 weeks and training camp is the week after so I've been training like a dog to be super fit for that. I'll be one of the only guys from the development team at training camp so I'll be training with the trade team guys. Our team has fluidity to the roster so I'm hoping to make a good impression and maybe get the call to the big team. Aside from that I got hit by a car on Thursday while doing my bike courier job. I'm not injured too badly, just some very sore muscles and a lot of bruises. I subsequently quit that job. I've been working with the owner of my local LBS (he's also a coach and former pro triathlete) and he's come on board with my coaching business to help expand it so that's been exciting. Next weekend I have the launch party for my cycling podcast which is also exciting. With training and coaching and podcasting stuff I've been keeping pretty busy. On that note, since there are a lot of new people in the thread this year and I'm trying to get the word out, I've created two training plans that anyone can use if they wish (you have to get a Training Peaks account though, which is free). One is a 9 week beginner Sprint plan (distance and HR based) the second is a 16 week intermediate HR-based Olympic plan. You can find them at www.trainingpeaks.com/hpp They're free. Use them at your discretion. Even though I don't post as often as I would like, I read all the posts as they come. If anyone has any training related questions, feel free to ask them and I will do my best to answer. Edited by adempsey10 2016-03-08 9:40 AM |

I will send positive vibes your way! Sucks about getting hit by the car! It's so frustrating trying to share the road with people who share as well as my 3-year-old nephew... Glad you're not more seriously injured, though! My friend ran into someone's door when they opened it suddenly right in front of her and her foot was stuck in the clip and she broke her ankle Scary stuff. Things like that freak me out, b/c if a car had been next to her it could've been even worse. I will definitely check out this Training Peaks thing, and let my boyfriend know about it as he is just getting into training. Thanks Alan! |

Hoping to get in a swim today at lunch time, but my chair scheduled a meeting at noon, so it will all depend on how long that lasts. The pool closes at 2. My explorer is officially dead. Estimate to fix is $1700-2000, so I'm really in the market for a new truck. I was holding out hope that the mechanic would come back with a reasonable estimate and I could allow my emotions to overpay to keep my beloved vehicle running a little while longer. Alas...he is dead...as a door nail. Looking at vehicles online and I found a nice used Ram 1500 in my price range. Unfortunately, the dealer is 45 miles away and they close at 6pm, so I have to wait until the weekend to test drive. I need to get a new vehicle, because I'm not sure my marriage can handle any more car pooling to work! We aren't morning people!! Okay, I'm a morning person in that I like to get up and do my stuff in the morning, but I certainly don't want to talk to anyone!! Hope all is well with everyone! |
