Sprint_DA - 2009-01-15 4:10 PM Hey Wurkit, sorry to break your heart, but those tickets aren't as cheap as I'd thought.  If you start riding your bicycle now you might get here by the time it starts warming up.

i change my mind, i'm going home a little early to snuggle with my doggie.

Snuggling with doggies makes everything better.

I hug my pups all the time.  They are small and can lay on top of me when I watch tv.  I like that.

mr2tony - 2009-01-15 2:59 PM PIlot apparently hit a flock of Canadian Geese on takeoff and lost control. He couldn't get back to LGA so he went down in the river, according to my correspondent in New York.

Wow, that's a heck of a flock of geese to make you loose control on an airplane that big.  Must have been a decent pilot if he got it down soft enough to not kill anyone.

i'm pretty sure one bird in a turbine and any plane goes down.

ETA: Youtube linkage.

Pretty sure they're made to be able to digest poultry.

Not correct. They hit a bird and they're pretty much fu**ed. They CAN withstand bird strikes but it's like rollin' the dice. We had a Falcon hit a bird once on takeoff and had a complete flameout. He managed to get relit and come back and land. But yeah, generally, airplanes and birds are NOT a good combination.

Well, that makes me feel fantastic about flying - how would they even know until it's too late if they hit a bird? I mean a flock of geese, they'd see, but one bird? Great...more reasons for me to dislike flying...

birds don't fly as high as airplanes.  their little birdbrains would implode.  its just takeoff and landing that is an issue.

I know - that's why I said in an earlier post that it would be a problem going up and then coming back down. But still, planes go way faster and birds are kinda small - and the engines are way out to the side. I don't know how the pilot would necessarily see one poor little birdie.

that's why they have fod walks and all kinds of satellites watching local airspace and all kinds of stuff.  i'm pretty sure they have thought about this one and have measures in place to minimize risk.  airlines operate on better than 6sigma, i believe.

They do EXTENSIVE bird strike testing on engines. I've seen the test videos, they are amazing. Those engines are build to withstand a bird the size of a chicken flying through it and ripping off one of the fan blades - it will be damaged but won't crash. A FLOCK? Notsomuch.

ETA: Chicken reference. Bok.

Exactly. Especially a flock of geese, which are about twice the size of the average chicken.

YES, obviously

It's embarrasing, but not laugh out loud funny....

I was in college and in a rare mood and trying to fit in and have a good time with some people I was at a party at.  So just acting a fool.

I walked into the bar area (at was a frat house), and a bunch of guys were sitting around with long faces drinking beer.  So I step into the middle of them trying to pick things up and yell "WHAT'S WRONG GUYS!  LET'S PARTY!!!!  WHAT, DID SOMEONE DIE!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

The answer?  "Yes, a friend of ours was in a car crash this morning and was killed".  I don't know if I have ever felt as bad or as uncomfortable in my life......

I'm not sure if a 6'7" can shrink and skulk away, but I managed....
