QueenZipp - 2010-07-30 4:35 PM Anyone racing this weekend?

I tweaked my calf again today.....looks like running will be out for a few more days possibly biking too cause it's pretty tender to put weight on!

Hey you gotta start taking care of yourself a little bit better...

disturbed275 - 2010-08-01 7:39 PM Ragbrai was an incredible experience.  Its basically just a giant party on your bike and I had a blast up until my accident.  Day 6 I hit a rut in the median and was tossed over my handlebars.  Suffered a concussion and had to get stitches in my head and finger.  I'm bruised and have quite a bit of road rash, but fortunately nothing was broken so IMWI is still in the cards for me.  I'm hoping for a quick recovery.

Sorry to hear about the accident. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery!! Now here is my question, Where you wearing a helmet and did it do anything for you?

Yikes!  Scary Frown  Glad you had fun besides the accident, though!  Good thing you're mostly ok - heal quickly!!

I was actually thinking of doing Ragbrai as well, but ended up not signing up since it was the week after my HIM.  I'd love to do it maybe next year if I can take the time off work!

You should definitely ride it next year.  I know how you like to run to the bar, have a drink and run home.  You'd fit right in

carrie639 - 2010-08-03 7:44 AM Neal,

Hope you are feeling better, any pics (assume your sense of humor is back)

Hopefully you recover quickly and don't lose to much training time.  What exactly happened?  Did you not see the barrier? Blocked by others?

There's a picture of my road rashy face on my blog.

As far as the crash goes, I really have no recollection of it.  We were riding on a poor section of road that had about a one inch gap between the concrete of the two lanes of traffic.  The last thing I remember was thinking to myself to be careful when changing lanes.  Apparently I passed some people and was getting back into the right lane when my front wheel got stuck in the gap and I catapulted over the handlebars.

I was wearing my helmet and I firmly believe that it spared me far worse injury and would go as far to say as it saved my life.  The helmet itself was cracked in a couple of spots.  I'm sure I hit my head pretty hard since I was knocked unconscious for several minutes.  I can't imagine what would have happened without one.

Wow!  That's crazy!  That's why I always wear a helmet - I'm actually amazed at how many people who bike commute don't wear one Undecided

Haha!  I'm sure I could find some bar-runner friends who would do it with me too!  In fact, some of these same friends have contemplated doing a bar-tri of sorts (swim from one bar to a 2nd bar, bike from the 2nd to 3rd bar, then run from a 3rd to 4th bar).  I think Ragbrai would be right up their alley!

Ya know, reading about that concussion....and seeing the things I have seen in my many years as an ER RN make me really wonder why people let their children ride without helmets!

Neal sorry to hear about the wreck but the upside it appears it fits in the training schedule well. I will be working the same for my 1/2 on the 11th recovery week, 3 build 2 taper.

I am so glad you are OK.

I think the oversleeping is your body telling you to take it easy and let you body heal!!!! Take advantage of it not, cuz you don't have long til the big day.

I was thinking of doing the Madison OWS and doing a ride on the IMWI course (maybe skip the stick and just do a 1 loop).  How hard is that course?  Am I going to be kicking myself, or will I be like "WOW, I just road the IMWI course?"

I am glad to hear the helmet did its part and spared you from worse injuries. It is amazing at how many people I see riding bikes  that don't where a helmet.

I haven't been on the course yet so I can't speak to how difficult it is.  Perhaps Lori can.  All I know is that the course will be full of bikers that day because a lot of people will be swimming and then riding it

9 mile long run on tap.  After that, heading up to Sacramento to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday.  Since we'll be staying the weekend, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a recovery run in on Sunday, but I hope to.

How hard is the IM WI bike course?  Depends on a lot of things.

How often do you ride hills (4 hills of real consequence)?  Plenty of false flats, turns, short hills but also plenty of straight shots.  Hills are Hwy 92 into Mount Horeb (long), Old Sauk Pass (longest), Timber Lane (steepest), and Midtown (I think Midtown is the worst).  I would say lots of hills and turns would describe it best but no hills that are like mountain pass climbs.

Are you a confident bike handler?  Just a few tricky turns to take a little slower than you think you should.  Couple of very short, steep hills where you have to turn right at the top.  Some rough roads too.

Let me know if you want any more info.

Hills of consequence?  Are there any in Illinois?  Do Barrington Hills count?  No clue . . .

OK, but if I only plan on doing the loop (only 40 miles) I should be OK then.  I am not great at hills, I might even say I suck, but I need the work.  Just use the easy chain ring right.

I am getting better at bike handling, not the best, but getting better.  I do hate turns after hills (little switchbacks - ugh)

Any info you have can help. Wish I could plug into the computrainer right at the loop and get a feel for it, unfortunately I don't think you can do that.

Can I park in or near Verona after the swim and go from there?  Are the roads clearly marked that I can follow never having done the course?

Sorry guys but I skipped my race yesterday.  Pushed it a little to hard swimming with paddles on Friday and was still sore yesterday.  Couldn't afford another injury, so played it safe.  Last time I pushed it, I had to take a month off.

Great job Scotty!!!

Neal how is the groin?

Century ride went pretty well, probably a little more of a jump in distance than I needed to do but all went well. About 15 miles left the course had a climb that sort of sucked the life out of me but other than that and a sore butt pretty fun day, took it pretty easy, me and a friend rode it and every time we would stop we would see a group go by and never could seem to catch up, missed the train all day and pretty much switched off pulling between the 2 of us.

Congrats on finishing the century!  That's a good distance in a day.  I don't have a lot of group riding experience put the couple of pace lines I found on Ragbrai were phenomenal.  I hopped in at the end and just let them pull me to the next town.
