I didnt wear a wet suit last year, but I remember on the practice swim monthish prior to race that TJ set up, the Friday practice swim prior to race day and on the bike on race day..people were second guessing the choice to wear wetsuit. Each person said they were burning up and one lady I chatted with on the bike leaving town said she stopped a few times to put water down her top to cool off.  Now I think the months leading up to race last year were warmer than this year, so take that for what its worth.

How do you know which swim skins or speedsuits are legal? I don't see anything about that in the athlete guide. Is it on the Iroman website?

Thanks

Pretty sure I saw a side bar on the right of the Athlete Guide that stated illegal wetsuits. Might check it again

I swam last year's IMTX in a 1:20 with a Torque Speedsuit.  I don't remember exactly where I was positioned, but it was likely in the middle of everything.

For me, there were two "bad" places:

1) the entire first stretch before the turn.  Being a 5'4" woman and with the field being 75% men, I was turned into a human bobber.  I would get hands placed in the small of my back from people taking a stroke, and instead of being nice about it and moving their hand, they'd just go right ahead and push down (on me) to complete their stroke.  I was never kicked in the head but I did get kicked in the breastbone pretty hard.  Maybe if I had a wetsuit on, I wouldn't have bobbed as much... but I hate wearing a wetsuit, so it was what it was.  Luckly, I don't get panicked in the water.  This was my first IM and I just wanted to enjoy the day.  I ended up being highly amused by all the craziness - I mean, who does stuff like this?

2) the canal.  During the race meeting, they said "do not stand up in the canal, it is 4 feet deep and it may have rebar, metal and glass (construction debris).  In this section, we became salmon swimming up a river.  The only cool feature was the fan support.  How often do you get to swim a good stretch with fans on both sides of the water, cheering?

The stretch after the first turn but before the canal was awesome.  Tons of open space.

I hit my goal time exactly, so I think I had a good swim even with all the craziness.

Reading the Athletes Guide, they will have GU, Roctane GU, Gu Chomps and Bonk Breaker Bars. Anyone had those Bonk Breakers? Can't say I have heard of them before now.  Of and of course the delicious tasting Ironman Perform, hope they don't get a bad batch like at IMWI in 2010 when a ton of us got sick afterwards.

@Tripatrick - we have a group lined up to do 2.4 mile swim in Lake Woodlands and then 86 miles of bike on the course and then 2-3 mile run on Saturday.  Give me a way to contact you if you are interested and I'll give you the details.

i am looking forward to make my first IM distance without wetsuit - first, its more usual to wear wetsuits in europe, cause waters are cooler and unfortunately a lot of organizers don´t care about the wetsuit rules and measure the water temperate in 20m deep water - additionally i am going for kona slot, so i HAVE to swim without suit - @ karen: still i am a bad swimmer and hate body contact :D - i guess its just a question if you are strong and confident in a discipline - i will always be a runner and a non-swimmer, even if i can manage to improve my swim.´

what is actually the current water temperature of lake woodlands ?

@ All - thanks a lot for the help so far - the thread is great to get information about the race and the surrounding.

cheers, erwin

Just ran 7 miles in the heat, well 80 degrees and 60% humidity. Man, that was rough since the heat usually doesn't bother me. Looks like I need to run in it more.

I have been using Bonk Breakers the last couple of weeks alternating half a bar and a gel every 25 min on the bike. I really like them - they are more moist than Cliff Bars and seem to sit well in the stomach.

90 degrees for a forecasted high in Big D today. Think its time for a long run ... hope to get in 18 miles. Good race practice! I have 2 different 6 mile loops that swing by the house before starting the next so I can grab more water and/or nutrition without having to carry it all with me

Are these a new item? I tried at two shops today and neither store had even heard of them. I think I will try to see if I can order some tonight to at least try them prior to the race.

I just descovered these a couple of weeks ago. I found them at a local bike shop. I really do prefer these over cliff bars. I have worked them into my nutrition plan. I hope they have good flavors to pick from. The peautbutter and Jelly one is high in protein I am not a big fan of PB & J. See the link below.

Well I think I have officially given up on any sort of heat acclimation. We had a week of mid 80's in March (all record temps) but now we are struggling to hit mid 50's. Just got back from a late night 20 miler and the temp was down in the mid to high 30's. Now they are saying mid next week before we start to see a warming trend. Yell

Chilly here in Cincinnati too.  At least I had some heat training running the Boston Marathon.  Looks like that is all the heat conditioning I will get before the big day.

Moving these past few days - so tired!  Last big training weekend.  So ready for taper!

For those who have not 'liked' Swim Shops of the Southwest on Facebook (hint), Water temp in Lake Woodlands this morning (as measured by the Park Ranger) is 75 degrees.

If you are riding the course tomorrow there will be a slight detour in Montgomery. They are have a 1k, 5k, and 5 mile race for the school districts athletic department. Rey close off part of the lone star parkway, but a right at the 4 way stop then left at fm1097 will get you right back to 149.

I can't agree more. Last big ride then the taper begins on Sunday for me. I am ready to get some extra time in the day without working and working out.
