Hey everyone, I have a question about training for a half marathon followed by a sprint.  I am going to do my first half marathon on March 2nd and then my 1st sprint on May 4th.  For now I am following Hal Higdon's Novice 2 program for the HM that has you doing three short runs during the week then a long run on the weekend. Other than that I am just trying to squeeze swim and bike workouts in on days off and whenever else I can. My thought was that I would focus on running for now then after the HM rely on the running base I have built up and really focus on the swim and bike. Does that seem like the best plan or should I be trying to follow a set triathlon plan and a running plan now?

I am looking to buy a used tri bike. I am currently training on my old road bike. It's nothing special but it is currently getting the job done. My plan for this year is to do a couple of sprints with my A race being the Racine HIM in July. I'm fine using the road bike for the sprints but I think once I get into the longer distance I'd like a true tri bike. I don't have much money and my thought was to get something used entry level to get in the game. Use it for a year or two and then if I want to upgrade hopefully it would have a little resale value and then I could make the big purchase.

That being said I have a lead on a quintana roo kilo for around $600. Some of the specs:

Trimax Plus Vision Bars
Mavic Cosmic Wheelset
Shimano 105 Group
Ultegra Front Derailleur
105 Rear Derailleur

Thoughts??

Matthews - 2013-01-18 12:53 PM Jame and Ernesto, i think it should be fixed. Its not listed as draft on my ipad.

Works for me. Great to read the report

I can so identify those panic attacks in the swim. I don't know what that's about (apart from me not being very experienced in the water). I'm not scared of the water, don't think I'm going to drown or get eaten, but a few times in the first 200 metres i just want to get out of the water, preferably by running across the top. Once I've got past this point, I'm ok, even toward the end when I'm getting tired.

Apparently Sydney got the highest temperature on record! Greg, hat off to you for training in those conditions. Or maybe not, I should keep it on, that's the only shade I get here.

Matthew, I still can't read the report, shows as draft. Am I doing something wrong?

----------

A late 1500m swim in the lake at sunset. Too hot during the day and the sun is too bright. The measured temperature is in the shade, but we have no shade here... Where are the clouds??? I love the clouds. I miss the clouds. I miss big trees that give shade. I miss winter.

Mark, certainly was hot, but my training was early in the morning before everything started to melt.

With Matthew's report, I'm assuming it's the second on on the list from 5 Jan??

Watch ebay. Last year I bought an older Kestrel Carbon bike for $500.00 including shipping. It had a disk and aero bars. I remember when I was looking the Erensto had an issue with Quintana Roo, I don't remember when model, but it was very heavy and slow.

I am looking for a new pair of trail shoes. I bought a pair fo Avia's and hate them. They will be used on ice and snow (if we get some). The Avia's are fine on the ice, just not comfortable. What does everyone else use?

Great report. I love the photo of you and the kids running along the beach. My kids are a bit older, but it still feels good to have them and the rest of the family there. What chocolate paste do you use? Huge fan of Nutella, especially with peanut butter mixed in oatmeal before a race.

Matthews - 2013-01-17 6:53 PM James and Ernesto, i think it should be fixed. Its not listed as draft on my ipad.

Great report. I love the photo of you and the kids running along the beach. My kids are a bit older, but it still feels good to have them and the rest of the family there. What chocolate paste do you use? Huge fan of Nutella, especially with peanut butter mixed in oatmeal before a race.

it was very good to have the kids there. They certianly gave me a little boost. There is nothing like the family there to cheer you on to pick you up when your tired and feeling a little down. We normally have the nutella but as it goes so fast in our house(kids love it) my wife often gets something cheaper. i do love my peanut butter as well.

JBacarella - 2013-01-18 7:00 AM I am looking for a new pair of trail shoes. I bought a pair fo Avia's and hate them. They will be used on ice and snow (if we get some). The Avia's are fine on the ice, just not comfortable. What does everyone else use?

Jim - I'd love to get into trail running but its too darn hard to find time to drive to the trails...way easier to walk out door and run.  You should either treck down here or go online and visit REI and read the reviews.  Always happy with the service and quality of my REI experiences.

Thoughts??

Watch ebay. Last year I bought an older Kestrel Carbon bike for $500.00 including shipping. It had a disk and aero bars. I remember when I was looking the Erensto had an issue with Quintana Roo, I don't remember when model, but it was very heavy and slow.

And make sure it fits.  I think I've heard that once or twice on this site.  Smile

Did a cycle/tread fitness class this morning. 35 minutes on the spinning bike and then straight to the treadmill for 30 minutes of 1 minute sprints with 30 second jogs. Tough workout.

Not sure I would ever buy a bike online that I hadn't been able to test ride before buying....

OK, I guess I should add that I have ridden this model of bike. Not this exact bike and a few others as well. The one I test rode seemed like a pretty good fit. I guess I was just looking for thoughts on whether the bike is a good starter bike and if the price seems fair.....thanks

Guess I would, because I did. I have no regrets. It carries same issues as everything else, you have to check the seller and read the description carefully.

Run after work last night then SBR today before and after TRX class.  I feel really slow. Tried pushing a little faster today and the ankle started acting up a bit.  Not like before, but still a little gun shy about going too hard.

There is an interesting article about HR and panic in water

http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2008/02/one-big-ice-cube-swimming-in-cold-water.html

Although it mentions specifically cold water, I believe it applies to events even here in FL. The key is trying to control those factors that get you HR going. Even a quick "warm-up" swim 5-10 minutes before your wave is schedule to start will help you keep your HR in check.

millscd63 - 2013-01-17 10:39 PM Hey everyone, I have a question about training for a half marathon followed by a sprint.

I am also following Higdons Novice 2 plan for my Feb 17 HM, followed by an April Sprint (not my first). My recommendation is not to completely ignore swimming and biking (although depends on your background).

I do not plan to follow a tri-plan until after the HM, but I do plan to use Sunday's cross training day for a long easy ride, Monday (supposedly day off according to plan), for a swim; and maybe a swim or ride Thursday afternoon, depending on how I feel (I think swim fitness will take longer to regain than bike fitness-right Ernesto?- but again it depends on your strength and weaknesses).

Biking and swimming at least once a week should help you gain fitness in those sports once you start tri-training fully (so you are not starting from scratch). The key is listening to your body. Know when to add workouts and when to skip them. The objective is not only to avoid injury, but to avoid overdoing it too. I will definitely keep at least 1 day off, as that was what I did last year while tri-training. Skipping a day of training is not going to affect you that much, doing one too many might.
