Went back to my orthopedic dr. today.  He says the pain I've been having on the inside of my shin is medial tibial stress syndrome.  I haven't run in a week and he says to wait AT LEAST another week, and then start back very slowly.

Trying to stay positive....I can still swim, bike, run in the pool, etc. This should be an interesting way to train for my 50k on March 9th Undecided

Speaking from experience and said in a comforting way "bag that March 50K" and focus on getting back to 100%.  I've been stupid and regretted it.  I bet if you asked Linda if she should have deferred Boston in '12, she would have said yes to save the leg and rehab.

You have a very long list of races you're doing in '13.  Gert well for them.    I know it isn't easy to scrap something, but soul search and ask if it is smart to consider something like a 50K with only a few weeks to go.

X2 with Suzy - hard as it is to do, bagging it is the right call.  I'd give a lot to be able to remake that decision from last year!!!

I know you are both right, but I'm not going to bag the March race.  Innocent  It's the first in a 4 race series that is my primary goal for the year.  I will consider bagging the April 50 miler if I'm still having issues.  The 50 miler is a stand-alone race, and I could live without that on my resume this year.

You can both reserve the right to say, "I told you so."

Never!!!  Take in all of the advice that you can, then make your own call - and live with it! There have been other times when I really should have bagged it - didn't - and everything was fine.  Sending healing vibes your way!!!!

I totally get your goals, Jayne... I'm with the conservative folks who say don't run the 50K as the long-term risks, IMO, aren't worth it. But you are a big girl and can make your own decisions!! I'm like Julia as I tell myself, "I'd rather run tomorrow, and next week, and next month..." I am preaching that to my daughter these days -- I am building her up to a 15K on March 3. Some days we go out and parts of her body hurt. I always make her walk home if the hurts don't sound good or get worse, and I tell her, "I want to run with you tomorrow and next week and on March 3 more than I want to finish this run here, today." BIG PICTURE!!!!

All that said, I hope your body cooperates and you can accomplish what you set out to do!!

Are you feeling the love?  Yes?  No?  In honor of Valentines Day:

Who's getting ready to love that finish line?

Last week, I asked you about your strengths and weaknesses.  This week, sticking with the above theme, tell us what you LOVE about the sport of Triathlon?  What is it that gives you that Lovin' Feelin' and keeps you coming back?

Feelin the love!! The Balmelli Babes are gearing up for a 6k trail run this weekend. This will be a first for us. Hopefully we encounter some good humored souls as we will be dressed in our Valentine's Day boxers. (It's all for good luck) Wink

As far as what I love about Triathlon, waiting to figure that out...I do know that the peeps are a much more sociable crowd. I love that we can combine three sports into one. I love that I can compete against myself. I love that I can look at race results and see an 81 year old female competitor kick cause that's what I wanna do when I am that young.

And, hubster is awesome. Supporting me through this little endeavor, even though it takes away from him and the kids. And, he was such a sweetheart for cutting up strawberries and chocolate for me and the girls to share at work.

Happy Valentines Day Everyone!!

I've been waiting for this week for a while! Saturday is my first race, ever. I've never done even so much as an organized 5K fun run. On Saturday I'm doing a sprint duathlon (2.5K run, 10M bike, 2.5K run). The weather is expected to be 45° at the start.

I've done the full race distance the last two weekends just to be sure that I'm prepared. My goal is to have fun, don't embarrass myself and finish!

You won't be a racing virgin much longer.  Soak up every moment and enjoy the day.  Just don't put the helmet on backwards, and if you do....take pictures! Cool

NO WORRIES DUDE!  You've got this!!!!  Be sure to get some pics to share.

Jayne - add me to the list that gets to say "I told you so" later please Kiss

No racing for me - still working on bike base building and swimming...  may try to run this coming week..  guess I have to run if I want to do tri's   I do hope to get out on the mtn bike trails some this weekend too...   Sorry to be a bit hit and miss, but work has taken some unexpected turns so far this year....

Edited:  Crud, I didn't even answer the follow on question - what do I love about triathlon - lots of hot chicks in skin tight clothes..  uh, duh...    seriously, I like that I can do a variety of different things while working out...  I get bored easily of just doing the same thing every day...

Caleb - awesome have fun. enjoy the many moments, not about the destination it is about the experience.

Jayne - my two cents...ODAT....if you feel like running on the day of the race  then run....if it starts to feel weird then stop....in the mean time use the same formula....listen to your body.

Is it? Laughing  Maybe it's because you're not racing?

We arrived in Kauai on time!  The 10 day forecast has rain every day but one.  I refuse to believe it, even if this is the rainiest place on earth.

We've had rain nearly every day for the past 2 weeks, seemed to follow the cyclone. I really like it because it's lovely and warm and everything is lush and green again. Also between the showers we've got beautiful blue skies, I imagine Hawaii is similar.

I've started adding in my little 15 min barefoot runs to my routine and my legs feel better already. I've got 12 more weekends until IMOZ and my plan has me sticking to 3 Hr long rides for another 2 weeks, do you think I should follow it or start adding volume?? (plan is 13 weeks to sub13 HR IM by Gale Bernhardt).

Stick to the plan.  You chose it for a reason!  What is your longest distance thus far?  when does it have you hitting 5+ hours? will that get you to roughly 100m?

Why in the world are you barefoot running given your injury history?  Does the plan call for it?  If not, I would revisit, seriously.

Sending you good race vibes for your duathlon.  We are running that same duathlon (distance-wise) in April...at a winery!!  Woo Hoo!!  So, good luck and have a great time.  Let us know how it goes, and also let us newbies know if you have any good advice afterwards. Laughing

Ok I apologize for this long post but this is one of my favorite quotes, and seemed like a perfect spot for it. The guys can wince and the ladies can swoon Smile

“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

Have you looked at the plans here on BT?  How many times a week will you be able to do each sport.  There is a solid 16 week Olympic plan here on BT that has you doing each sport 3X a week.  You would have to start on week 4 (I think), so you would need to look it over carefully and see if you feel like you could handle that volume without making too big of jumps too soon.  You can always scale back a little if necessary.  There are also plans that help you focus on one particular sport if it's a weakness for you.

From your logs, I would say consistency is something you need to focus on, especially with your running.

Keep the questions coming.

Had a look at the Triradar 12 week plan, looks good. I think as long as you train regularly and get your distances up to above the race distances - I like 1.4 x race distance i.e. 14km run and 56km bike - then you'll have a good race.

My longest recent distance was probably one of the days in the mountains in Spain, 95km with 2000 metres climbing. Since then it's all been 3 hour trainer rides done with TrainerRoad at a pretty good effort level and no breaks.

The weekend rides from here on are (hours): 3 tomorrow,3,2,4.5,5,3,5.5,6,2,4.5,2,race!

A little bit of barefoot running has always helped me in the past, I promise it will stick at a couple of 15 min very easy jogs a week

I got out for a short run in the snow late this afternoon.  There was about 2 inches of nice dry powdery snow on the ground - perfect for a soft run and much, much better than the icy conditions I was struggling with about a week ago.
