ponderingfox - 2013-02-18 10:06 AM Oh man, after playing close to two hours of indoor soccer last night, my calves are KILLING me.  Now off to do my six mile long run (first time ever)!  It's going to be an endurance event, fo sho.

Funny how those short sprints wreck your calves!  I can run and run, swim for hours, even ride on the trainer for long periods.  One Step class and I'm crippled!

Good luck with your 6 miler!  Report back....I so don't wanna do any work today!

Well, I did it.  The first three were tough, and a mental battle.  I promised myself after mile three I'd take a water break (forgot water bottle), and after that the last three were easier (though not easy).  Forging into unchartered territory is great.

As for being an Adventist (a Christian denomination for those not wanting to take the time to look it up), we have a strong emphasis on healthy living. Our body being "a temple of the Holy Spirit", and all that.  There are a lot of Adventists that are vegetarians in pursuit of healthy living.  It's great, I like it.

Well done on the six-mile training PR, Foxy!

Ah HA! I caught another one of you. That's another coupon for me to Souplantation

I lived in Loma Linda for seven years. 'Nuff said ... actually I was involved with two SDA churches (one we started, y'know with real music 'n' all, and we started an additional service at the other church that had contemporary worship music), tutored students at Loma Linda Allied Health, did rounds, volunteering, ER work, you name it I did it at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

The fellow I got a legal separation from is SDA--his dad was a preacher/missionary based in Lebanon but went all over the Muslim world and was a scholar of Islam. His mom was a nurse and nurse manager forever.

So we ate vegetarian. Sometimes he and I, the black sheep carnivores, would eat meat if we went out for a special meal. I do remember I drew the line when we were watching a cooking show where the lady was making cashew cheese and the stuff that was going into it was worse than regular cheese!

I remain at heart a Seventh-day Adventist, but really, mah soul belongs to the Lawd and that's just that. (but it always seems to me Saturday is the Sabbath, which makes me very popular with Jewish boys).

I have nothing but good things to say about the Adventists. Sure, there's weird people and bad apples in every kind of community, including religious ones, but man ... I was *loved* and taught how to *love* by example. Also, as far as Adventist missions go, it's evangelism by providing healing and teaching (health/medicine and education, very very very strong points), which is pretty much how I figure Jesus did it.

Also, y'all ordain women .

Okay, I'll get off the pulpit now. It's just a part of my being and past, and of many dear friends for life, that I cherish.

So what's your story?

oh wow. The SDA world is shockingly small. Lol
Not such a small world just a world filled with wonderful generous gracious people, ok and our share of fundamentalists too, but every group on the planet has them (even triathlon).

Ah hahahaha Laughing love it

Sorry but that made me snort tea out of my nose. You'll be right Jo you have the swim and the run nailed, and you can do the bike thing, you know you can. You've already done a HIM so you can ride for some reason your brain has let your fear of it block out the memory of you actually doing that.

The Adventist world IS small. I'm kinda thrilled that Yanti and I have a connection now.  I did put enough out there that people could do the math.  But you weren't the first to figure it out Yanti.

I took some time off in college to go to a small semester-long Bible school in Portland, and then spent about a couple years total working for churches in different parts of the country.  Really, the best years of my life.  Then I finished undergrad and grad business degrees, doing lots of campus ministry along the way (two of the students I worked with just got engaged, I'm so pumped!).  Now I work for Kettering Health Network, another Adventist hospital system, doing business-y stuff.

I'm sorry to hear that's the relationship that didn't work out.  Glad to hear that the mom and dog liked you better.

The Team Revolution in my sig is an Adventist tri/endurance club.  As we race, we get people to sponsor us to support different projects.  It helps keep training/racing in perspective, and also a good motivator.  And I'm sure on some level we have all learned spiritual lessons from endurance sports.

Anyhow, we're going to have to do a race together someday Yanti!

Hey Jo just had an idea that might kind of help (or maybe not cause my psyc degree came from the weet-bix box).

Get a photo of you on your bike from your HIM, even pay Marathon photos $50 for it if you have to, and make multiple copies of it, I'm talking a dozen or so. Then sick them up everywhere, on your fridge, on your toilet door on your bathroom mirror, at your desk at work, in your car, everywhere. Every time you see the photo say out loud(like you mean it) "I can ride a bike, no sweat!"

the theory behind this sort of thing is that the constant exposure and positive comment helps to re-enforce the sub conscience and over ride the fear.

Our body being "a temple of the Holy Spirit", and all that.  There are a lot of Adventists that are vegetarians in pursuit of healthy living.  It's great, I like it.

The mental battles are the hardes - file it away in your suffer files, to be used when you're out suffering again!

Yeah, I'm learning not to believe what my body is telling me over the first half of a workout.  Unless, of course, there's an injury type of pain, but in the absence of that, I'm learning to push through it.  It's funny, there's one swim workout I did back in October that stands out in my mind.  I think I did 200y before quitting, lol!  That one gets chalked up as a life lesson.

First 2km of any run of any distance - I loathe.  Swim squad, 1km warm up or however long it is - i think of bailing all the way through that.  Then boom it's over and we're onto the main set and I'm loving life!  It's once the endorphins are pumping I'm fine.

Jo have you tried that your bike?  On the trainer until you are warmed up then out on the road?

Ive tried everything except riding the thing Laughing

Snerk!!! Ah Jo, you will get there. You will.

I hear you on warming up, though. I'm a superstar the first 100 in the water, then I'm dying until about 1K as well. One reason I do long warmups! (I think they're long, but I goggle at the length of some of the warmups in stock swim workouts--and understandable if you're doing sprints or a really, really hard main set, but 800 WU for a total 2500m workout?!)

Okay while I'm on the subject, and henceforth 'til IMNZ I plead taper madness for all the inappropriate stuff I say (I'll find a new excuse after post-IM depression, etc.) ...

I really can't believe Don Fink includes 800 worth of drills in his swim workouts, regardless of the workout! So yes, a 2500yd workout, with a 300 WU/CD AND 800 of drills?! I can see that as ONE workout in a swim-focused, really-needing-to-improve swimming training cycle, but honestly I think it's folly to recommend everybody, from the Just Finish to Competitive folks, do 800 of drills per workout.

Then again, he also really recommends that you just go to Masters.

And he has a ton of other good stuff in there, and I've used Be Iron Fit plans as the framework for every IM training I've done (which, so far, is six ... )

I was thinking about the 800 of drills today in the pool. I usually follow his plans but last week instead of his 3000 I did the Sara McLarty session and enjoyed it because it didn't have so much time in drills. That said, I do like doing some drills to reinforce my pull/high elbow/ roll.

I totally use don's program - i'm just Srtarting training for IM#4 and I follow his swims to a T (when I do them - sometimes a cut out a swim a week...)  I warm up 500m, drill 400, main set, drill 400, then  300cd.... Oh, Yant of excessive experience - have any words of wisdom for me??  I"m all ears, baby and willing to try out a different approach as long as i get my yardage in for the workout, ya know??

I'm kind of a Fink follower though it all fell over when I went to the UK at Christmas now I'm just cramming.

Swimming I go to masters or squad.  We mix it up but there are drills quite often - the whole warm up set could be 1000m of drills.

I suppose if you do these drills enough they become habit forming and you will unconsciously include them in your stroke.

I love when we do a fist set, or one arm drills then go back to freestyle - the difference is amazing.

Ok Podmates, need some help.

I just sprung for the Gold package so I could customize a training plan.

I have been running a lot this winter... Was up to 35 miles per week.  The last 2 weeks I have done almost no running.  I'm comfortable running 25 mpw with my long being 8-9 miles to start back up.

The issue I have right now is that I have approximately 27 weeks until my IM.  I put 26 weeks into the custom plan creator (figured I would start this Sunday) and the plan starts me out with way to much biking and way to little running for my current fitness level.

Should I just do the stock "Winter Maintenance - 8 Weeks RUN FOCUS" plan (starting in week 2) and then transition into the stock "Intermediate Full Ironman - 20 Week" that I can modify a bit...? Or should I just do a 26 week plan and do the distances it says?  It builds pretty good..and I can probably last the duration on the trainer for my biking right now.

Sorry if this sounds confusing...thanks in advance for your help.

Seems daft to do the 8 week run focus followed by the stock 20 week IM plan if you've sprung for the gold package?

Could you do the 26 week and add in extra running in exchange for or in addition to the bike.

Question! Registration for the Chicago marathon opens up tomorrow.  Do you think a two month ramp-up period is enough once I finish my summer tris (or can I still do tris while training for a mary)?  If I maintain 13-15 mile long runs through the summer after my April HM, will that work?

It just hit me that I might be able to make this work financially...

This is why I posed the question...because clearly I wasn't thinking straight.  Thank you...  I will upload the training plan to my logs... I'M SOOOOOO EXCITED... will be nice to get back to a schedule with a goal in mind.

KansasMom - 2013-02-18 5:59 PM Did a last minute race this evening. 3rd woman. Don't be too impressed, it was not a strong field. But still.

Way to go.... Manatee's frickin' rule!

You asked for it

DO EEEEEEEEEET!

X2... I'm guessing you already knew the answer to your question before you hit "submit"
