Originally posted by CyborgQueen Wow!! Lots of racers this weekend!! Best of luck to everyone! Question: Anyone have a recommendation of a fan to use for trainer rides? Lately I've been doing more and more trainer rides, and I notice that my HR gets a little higher the last 30 minutes or so than the start, even though it's the same intensity, same type of intervals, and I feel like I'm working harder, and I start to fall apart a little bit. It wasn't until today's ride that I realize that it's because I'm sweating a LOT, and I'm getting more heated as the ride goes on. So I need to get a fan to cool me down as I ride. I had to stop a couple times today...funny because it was "Meh...it was okay." ride, however, my cadence avg increased by 4 rpm, but still keeping in the same power zone. So I'm happy about that take-away. :D I don't want to spend crazy amount of money, but would like a good one. Thanks and BEST of luck again!! I wanna see those RR's!

I have a couple cheap fans from Lowes, one on the floor pointing up and a stand fan in my face sort of.  Brian mentioned one over the winter though that was nice.  Hopefully he sees this.

Ali and I swam in the lake and road 70 miles of the IMWI bike course. The course is in the shape of a lollipop with two loops. So we experienced all the terrain but didn't do the second loop. Overall it went well. The humidity is what is going to do me in if it is a hot day.

You never know what you will get in WI in Sept.  But at least you know what to expect from the course!! Glad you had a good ride!

Great picture!! You guys look like you are way too happy to be done!!

First race of the weekend done, mostly pleased with the results.  But I saw something today I hope to never see again in a race.  A racer during the bike segment came over a hill and there was an SUV stopped on the shoulder that had ran out of gas.  Apparently the rider ran into the back of the car and wrecked hard.  It was just about in front of a fire station.  A State Trooper passed us just as we were coming up the hill.  The fire trucks were already out there and when I went by they were doing CPR on him.  A couple of other riders were holding a tarp and the lady in front of me saw the bike and just started screaming.  I don't know if the bike was the down rider or one of those offering assistance.

I heard from one of the volunteers after the race that he didn't make it, which was later confirmed in the news.  My prayers are with his family.

It will be difficult to pass that spot tomorrow.

Well, I just spent the day actually watching my first triathlon. My youngest brother did his first sprint today at the mini mussel sprint. I just checked my bike in to transition tonight and I'm pretty much a mix of excited and nervous for tomorrow. Well, we'll just have to see how it goes.

ken - my bib number is 1799. I'm going in wave 4.

Ken,
That is horrible! I am so sorry for the family. That had to be very difficult to see.

Well, I was about to get on here and whine, but I'm not going to now. Ken, I hope you're doing
OK after witnessing such a horrible accident.

I had a total fail at my Oly race today, the one that had become my A race after my A race 3 weeks
ago got changed to a duathlon. I had a good swim, came out of the water
in good position, and got a corneal abrasion during the first mile of the bike. I tried to
ride through it but ultimately could not keep either eye open well enough to see. it is such
A minor injury and i still can't believe how much it hurts.

It was really cool, though, how many people stopped to be sure I was ok, even while I was
waving them on assuring them I just needed a sag wagon. And how the volunteers helped
me find my stuff and get to the ER We have lots of great people in our sport.
I am so sorry to hear we lost one today.

Jeez, sorry to hear that Ken.

Glad you're okay Jaime. sucks to blow a race, but a minor injury at the wrong time can result in so much worse.

Be safe everyone, and enjoy your racing/training.

My tri buddy is coming over shortly and we are going to plan our attack for our first 70.3 in Austin in October, so that is helping me feel less sorry for myself. My eye feels way better today but I had to call in the back up person for my shift today which I haven't done in about 3 years. Can't wait to see everyone else's race reports. Becky, you seem to be nailing your workouts so consistently...you are really an inspiration!

Um, sorry for all the posts, but I might be a little bored surfing the web like a one-eyed pirate today. What specialized skills can you think of that one needs to master before the first HIM? My friend and I have only done sprints and Olys, and while I am confident we can build up to the S/B/R distances required I am trying to make a list of the *other* skills we might need. So far I have come up with
1. nutrition
2. picking up water bottles at the aid stations without crashing
3. mass swim start (not freaking out)

Any others we should put on our list? What did you wish you had practiced before your first long course event?

Hi all,

How was the racing and training this weekend? I just have a second to check in and will go back and catch up tomorrow. My tri on Saturday turned into a du when the swim was replaced with a 2 mile run. It was rather fun to do something different! I will try to get a race report done tomorrow.
I do have a question. I was talking to my niece this morning. She started running earlier in the year and is very excited about it and sounds like she is really enjoying it. She is even signed up to do the run leg of a triathlon in September. Anyway, she was asked me about nutrition. I shared with her some of what I do, but was wondering if anyone had any articles or books they have relied on that I could recommend to her. I think she would be interested in general information and information specific to nutrition during events. Any suggestions??

This is a good start. Especially the nutrition piece. I have been using the EFS products so I dont have to use the aid stations for a half. 2 bottles of of EFS drink and a 5oz flask of EFS gel and a bottle of water. Seems to be working and I can avoid the bottle exchange. I know of people that do this with infinit or basically any other product.. Most halfs that I have done did not do the mass start, but you would want to check yours. Honestly, the worse ones for me have been in wave starts. Glad your eye is feeling better.

Glad you enjoyed the DU Karen!! I look forward to hearing more about it.For your niece, is she looking for race nutrition and for how long of a race? I see a lot of people that take on more than they need for the distance. Great though that she is interested in running!!

Race didn't go as well as I had hoped. I pulled a no brainer and forgot my wetsuit so I did the swim without. It went well but a little slow. Then the heat kicked in. I will give you the rest when I have a bit more time.

I don't know, I guess nutrition is important, just work it into your training. I take in water every 10-15 min and calories every 30-45 min even on short workouts. Not only does is help getting used to it, but S/B/R is usually just the start of the day, so I hate to start the day with too much of a deficit. As for 2 and 3, I think they are overrated as concerns (Just do it!). To me, going longer means pacing, pacing, pacing. And I guess consistent training helps, but I talk more than I train...

I hear you Ken. Some days you're the windshield, some days you're the bug... If Curly from the 3 Stooges did tri's, it would have looked like my sprint today. I added 8 minutes to my time from last year. I not only swam slowly, I swam in the wrong direction. Not a little wide, I started clockwise, when the course was counterclockwise. None of this is rocket science and I need to get better at this stuff. I'll be back next year to retake those 8 minutes, and maybe some more.

I had a good weekend of training. 3.5 hours on the road on Saturday and 1.5 on the trainer last night. Vacation next week and then I am 12 weeks away from race day... I will follow a more strict training plan at that point...

Jamie - don't get too caught up in the details - find the training program that best suits you and then everything else will fall into place. I was terrified of the bottle handoff at my first HIM as it turned out - I didn't need it - 2 water bottles and my aerodrink were plenty. I just started using EFS (on Ken's recommendation...thank you!) and it's been working really well for me. I really like the 5oz gel flasks.

Did a century ride on Saturday in the rain...good practice and for the first time in a long while I was actually a bit chilly for parts of it....that ended quickly early Sunday morning when I faded on my long run ...was able to get 11.5 miles in before I had to call it quits....just wasn't feeling right. Oppressive humidity just drained me. And now another heat wave has settled in!

bike is in the shop for a checkup so it's all swimming and running till Wednesday.

I did a 10K last year and someone doing the 5K had cardiac arrest out on the course - I heard about after the race. It left me with a knot in my stomach for a few days. I don't think he made it either.....
