Thanks Charles, that is super helpful! I will have to take a look at the custom stuff. This is definitely a huge motivator already. I love being aware of what I am putting in my body. It makes me so much more careful about what I am eating!

We do have a lot of sickies!

Thor, I like your new Friday tradition, but I am not drinking tonight so cannot join in (I took the week off of drinking ).

I had a relatively nice swim last night. I felt pretty good until I swam a little breaststroke and remembered how I strained my groin muscle last weekend. The rest of the swim was even slower, I just used a pull buoy to rest my leg. Then I got home and it was so cold outside that I attempted to run to my door, but stepped in a hole and rolled my ankle, while simultaneously re-straining my groin. I wish someone would've been there to see me. I probably looked like I got shot, and then I limped/crawled into my house. All is fine now, it was not a serious roll luckily (I roll my ankles all the time b/c I've sprained them before, but it usually only hurts for a minute).

HAPPY FRIDAY!

Hey! Congrats to everyone on all of the work! Especially welcome back to running Sandi!

Sorry I went dark- I was traveling for work and had some technical difficulties.

I did get to do a few really cool workouts- did a 5k run through the monuments in Washington DC and some strength workouts.

I am definitely a little off track- but feeling energized again- I was getting really tired two weeks ago- so ready to start knocking out workouts again!

what is the my fitness pal and how do you use it vs. the logs here?

My fitness pal is (at least for me) more about weight loss. I still stick to the BT training log!

that looks pretty good for most of what you need for wine and beer. You will still need a few things but for that price I would grab that up. What size are the carboys? also the "joy of homebrew" book is great. I still have mine from college

First things first - Gretchen - a tri before work! What do you do for an encore?

To everyone who's sick - get well soon and make sure you keep your fluids up less your performance once you start working out again stink blah blah...no I'm not your mom. Sorry

Training - was supposed to have an hour of kickboxing last night but my partner bailed. We were having 'Thirsty Thursday' at work. When shopping for it, we found 2013 Bigfoot barleywine. Aged for us already! I had to have one, even if it was before the gym. You can see where this is going - beer plus no partner for my class... Well I bucked up and went to the gym instead of having a 2nd beer. Got all the way to the gym to discover I left my workout bag at my desk. Turned around and went back for it to discover the building was locked. Luckily I had one co-worker still at work and he let me in. After all this the old, pre-BDAS me would have gone home for another beer, as clearly the universe was telling me today was not the day. Instead, I went BACK to the gym. Wanted to get my 2nd of 3 bike workouts in for the challenge but some kids were on the two Expresso bikes. Universe still fighting me here... SO - got on the treadmill, banged out 2 miles after a warm up, by the time I was done the kids were done screwing around and I got a 6.9 mile hill ride in, grabbed 2nd place on the leaderboard, stretched, and went home.

So 3 and 4 of ? are in the books, including 2/3 bike workouts.

From here it's up to Mother Nature. We're getting ANOTHER blizzard this weekend, I'm in the zone for another foot of snow. Stuff for Sunday is already getting cancelled or rescheduled including the hockey game I have tickets for. If it snows enough before Sunday morning and the Y is closed AGAIN (would be the second time this workout week including Monday from the last storm), I won't have spin and won't finish my challenge. Can't do it tonight as I'm doing the family swim then swim workout. Tomorrow I have an hour with the personal trainer AND 1:15 of hot yoga. Fingers crossed... Any one of you warm weather folks want to let me crash in your guest room for a few weeks?

Check-In

4/? after 3.5 miles on the treadmill. The plan was to do more, but a false fire alarm at the YMCA ended the workout early. Today was a bonus workout anyway since I usually don't work out on Fridays. The worst part was getting out to the car quickly while still "damp" and having the 15 degree air hit me.

I hope everyone gets feeling better real soon.

I may not be working out but I can answer your question.

Here is what your kit comes with:

5 glass carboys
wine corks and caps
spoon and brushes
airlock stoppers
hydrometer
wine and beer cappers

It's a good deal for what your getting. The glass carboys reg. go for 20-30 each. However - I think you would still need the following items to really do it right and make it easy on yourself.

- siphon
bottle capper
thermometer

Before I write more - tell me if you are 1) going to brew from extract or all grain 2) bottle or keg?

Man - you've really got to be tired to pull the fire alarm to get out of doing a workout

Nice job on getting the extra workout in!

I'm stupid tired (i.e. so tired I'm stupid--likely evidenced in my class!). Anyway, this morning I went for my normal Thursday Spin class and was planning a brick run afterwards (which I got in, so this week's challenge is complete). On my way back to the locker room I noticed the pool was completely empty--16 glorious lanes all to myself! Let's ignore the fact that I can only use one lane at a time... Jumped in for a quick 1200yds. It wasn't until I was on my way into work that I realized I did a triathlon today...before work. (55/400)

Gretchen - That is outstanding! You have been killing it and I'm blown away by how focused you are! Be proud of what you are accomplishing - I would pay to steal a little of your fire right now!

Hey y'all! I'm coming in a bit late, but I'm really excited there's a group of folks who train AND indulge in hops!

NAME: Mel, 25

STORY: Overweight since I can remember, due to poor diet, mostly. Very athletic in my childhood and early teen years, and swam competitively for 8 years. A knee injury my sophomore year of HS stopped all exercise flat for a long time, and I steadily gained weight until 2013. Lost about 50 lbs with diet and exercise, and plateaued in grad school as academics took over. I started swimming back in early January as a fun, low impact way to get some exercise, and realized very quickly that smoking was making it impossible to swim with good form/endurance. I quit smoking about two weeks ago, and as a goal and motivator I decided to train for a sprint.

I have no experience road biking and can't currently run more than half a mile. I can swim about 2700 yds (1.5 miles), but I don't have the endurance to go more than a few hundred yards without pausing for breath. I'm very focused on nutrition, endurance, building strength, and getting to the finish line, any weight loss along the way is just icing on the cake.

FAMILY STATUS: Single

CURRENT TRAINING: The 22 week sprint tri training plan, which I officially start next week. Been following the workouts this week though, and it's been great!

2014 RACES: None, bring on 2015!

RACES PLANNED FOR 15: Other than meets during my time as a competitive swimmer, I've never done a race before! I will soon be signing up for an Iron Girl in Columbia, MD on August 16.

BEER PREFERENCE: I'm a porter girl through and through. I also love IPAs and red ales, and I'm looking forward to the summer so I can knock back a few Hell or High Watermelons.

WEIGHT LOSS: In 2013 I lost about 50 lbs, and I've gained 15 lbs or so back through grad school. Trying to stay focused on fitness and endurance improvements rather than weight loss this time around.

Welcome to the party Mel! Congrats on losing the weight and quitting smoking. That's an amazing accomplishment and I'm proud of you knowing first hand how hard it can be! Please let us know how we can support you and help you get to that finish line! And you will!

Hi All - Welcome to the weekend!

Some BDAS business. Where do we stand with the design for the bike shirt?

I propose that we take the next week to narrow down the contenders in a 3 stage process. Stage 1 - Everyone can post a design they liked - either one that has already been posted or one that they create on their own. Stage 2 - Then - starting on Monday-Wed we have a first run off where each of us votes 2x and we narrow it down to 3 finalists . Stage 3 - Then from Thursday - Sunday, we vote a second time - 1 vote each - to pick the winner. Once we have a winner - we can tweak it a bit and then we will chose a company to make the shirts and go from there. How does that sound.

Secord order of business - I'm going to make a BDAS mix on my iphone this weekend. Maybe it will be the kick in my a55 I need to get going. Question - is there an app out there that we could use to create a BDAS mix that everyone could listen to? I was thinking I could do this on Spotify. Thoughts?

I think I would prefer to go from grain as my past experience many moons ago was not good with the can of extract. bottle or keg..probably bottle for now just to keep the cost down.

Cheers

Yess!! Superhappy for you! Amazing how small steps forward can make our day and inspire our future.
Been traveling this week so no workouts at all, willing to get home soon, but I can´t complain, Rio de Janeiro with family and friends at 40C (too anyway to do any workout) - beer here is freezing cold pilsner, can´t drink any other stuff with this heat and humidity
Love the music topic: will post mine as soon as I am back.
