I feel like a swimming machine because of it! sesh - 2008-04-30 11:12 PM Oh yeah, and everyone please post your goals for the month. Swim - 28,800 yards Did 2150 yds this morning. Felt good to work on bi-lateral breathing...had to cut the workout short, though...carpool... That's awesome! Quick question: In a race, do you now bi-lateral breathe, or revert back to one side? I've heard a lot of people say they start out with bi-lateral, then go into one-sided... I feel much more comfortable taking a breath every other stroke (right side)... |

I feel much more comfortable taking a breath every other stroke (right side)... I don't really think about it in a race. The more you work on it, the more second nature it becomes, and then you just don't even realize you are doing it. Toward the ends of the swim I'm typically breathing every other stroke. Whether that's right or left just sorta depends on how I end up. I feel comfortable either way. That's the key, though. Comfort. It's great to have bilateral breathing in your arsenal, but if the thought of doing it is occupying your thoughts in a race, you should probably scrap it and stick to your comfort side. Don't let it clutter up the brain. It'll slow you down. |

I feel much more comfortable taking a breath every other stroke (right side)... It honestly depends...how big of a washing machine is the start and what's the chop like... I'm more apt to start breathing every other stroke (or every 2 stroke sets) to the same side. But once things space out and calm down I try to go back to bilateral. It's really a comfort thing...and how much I'm panicking, too. |

Master 1289 Franklin, TN | Subject: RE: May "President's Cup" challenge - US Central Team Hey Team - I'm Terry from just south of Nashville, TN. 45, married w/2 kiddos. I played a lot of local tennis for 6 years then got into mtn. bike racing. Have done that for the past 3 years. Last year, a teammate asked me to do an XTERRA with him. I freaked on the swim (racing heartrate), did okay on the bike since it was offroad, but locked up with leg cramps 100 yards into the run. I swore I'd never do anything that stupid again. Until a month later a voice in my head said, "What if you tried it again next year and kicked its a$$?" So I signed onto BT, got my scription to Triathlete mag and have been training like a banshee since. I did another off road tri (no swim, canoe) in late Sept last year and did well. In Feb I started the BT Olympic 2x plan religiously and it'll culminate with that XTERRA (redeaux!) on July 6th when I kick its royal hinee! I want to do a few Olys later in Aug and Sept. Sprinkle in some mtn bike races and it is a full year. I've been in the last 2 challenges, am an admitted challenge-addict, and haven't had any trouble meeting my training goals. My training plan calls for (goals this month) : I have a 12 hour (4-man) team mtn. bike race on Saturday (www.DirtSweatandGears.com) and I'm sitting here at the office with a fever and a sinus infection. I'm off to the doc in 30 minutes then home to bed. I'll only miss a short run today and I can pick that up next week on a rest day. I have another mtn bike race on the 18th and a sprint tri on the 26th. In the sprint tri there are 11 of us BT'ers doing it, so it'll be great to meet some local BT'ers! I've put together some decent oly bricks, so I feel confident with the sprint. Love swimming 2x week in the mornings! Didn't mean to talk too much - looking forward to this month's challenge! |

Expert 1226 Chicago | Subject: RE: May "President's Cup" challenge - US Central Team And since everyone else is doing formal introductions... Yo. I'm Barb. I'm built for distance and not for speed. I'll take a long, slow 10 mile run over cranking out a fast 5k time any day of the week. My first tri of the season is this month (Galena on the 17th), so be prepared to hear me whine and cry about the hills. Then remind me that it's my own damn fault for not having gone riding outside (yes, I've been chained to the trainer, thanks mother nature...stupid wench). I hail from Chicago, Illinois and love all things about endurance sports and my Kansas Jayhawks (ROCK CHALK, BABY!). I come from a running background (marathons and ultras...albeit slow ones, as previously established) and my weakest discipline is by and far the bike. Any extra motivation there is appreciated. Yeah Sesh...I know...I love to bike, I love to bike, I love to bike. I really suck at updating my training log here at BT since I have to track everything for my coach over at WorkoutLog.com. But have no fears, I'm pretty anal about updating the spreadsheet. I hate letting people down. My hubby Mike (outofshapeguy on here) is training for Louisville IM...we're both doing the Kansas 70.3 in June...and assuming I live to share my experiences with that race, I imagine I'll probably sign up for Coeur d'Alene 09. ...like I said...I like going long. Oh...I'm a blogger, too. So feel free to pop over and check out my latest shenanigans in the world of swimming, biking and running. Aside from that...I have a black pug (Phog) and an orange tabby cat (Wrigley)...and I pretty much have no social life anymore thanks to my rigorous training schedule. :D Except for you guys...I'll socialize with you any day. , Texas | Subject: RE: May "President's Cup" challenge - US Central Team I've just been added to this group, so here is my intro. My name is Chris and I'm from Wylie (N Dallas) Texas. I started triathlons in '05 as a get-in-shape program after being a couch potato for 10 years in the "real world". I've completed nothing but Sprint races, but not for a lack of trying other distances. My big race in '06 was an Oly, but weather forced the Oly to be reduced to the Sprint distances for the s/b. Thankfully, they let us still run the 10k. Then, last year I was in for the Longhorn HIM and ruptured a disk in my lumbar about 2 weeks before the race. I ended up swimming the 1.2 and turned in my chip; probably not the smartest decision I made. Dec I was back at swim training, on the bike in Jan, and finally running mid February. My real focus to this point has been the swim since it was the safest for my back, so I joined a local masters swim team. I had my first race (sprint) of the year this past Sunday and while I did great on the swim and was ecstatic over the run, I wasn't too happy on the bike. So, here I am. My goal is: Swim: 30,000 yards I really don't care about the run, but 30 mi should be fine (I was going with the 30 theme). To be sure I start off on the wrong foot, I'm feeling a bit sick and am taking today off, but I should be fine. My races for this year will be a few sprints and (hopefully) 2 HIM Aquabikes. |
