Silver_wlf - 2009-06-06 10:21 PM So how are we doing on training?

Not nearly as good as I'd hoped.  Ended up getting sick at one point and then had to do some business travel.  Ended up pretty much just scrapping the plan and working on my weakness, which is the swim.  We just got back from a family vacation to Grand Haven and I did a couple of swims - it was beautiful.  Only hope that the water conditions are that good in August!

Training is going OK.  Just returned from a family vacation in San Diego, got in some good bike rides, even one mountain ride, one swim in the bay, and some runs along sunset cliffs.  Looks like about three weeks to train hard and then start the taper.  Wish I had some more base time in prior to the event, but I am looking forward to the race.

Was going along pretty good, then I got beat up at Johan's a little bit. slower than expected bike and run scared me a bit. Now I have to double those distances? Holy S. I'd better get going. Swim is going very well though.

33 days to go, we can make it!

I've been sticking pretty close to my training plan (with the occasional missed workout) although the last two weeks have been awful.  I raced a week ago and then this past week was the last week of school and it was just nuts.

I'm off for my long run today (I built a fence yesterday) and my bikes have been going well.  I am going to get in the water more often now that I'm out - but the swim at Leamington went really well.  I'm just hoping that it stays wetsuit-legal - I'm really enjoying the benefits of the suit!

I was doing pretty well.  Looks like we may come up and spectate/volunteer as I won't be racing this year   I broke my collarbone doing IMCDA a week ago.

I haven't been logging because of laziness but i'm hitting these next couple weeks hard then it's taper time!

Wifey got me a 305 for my birthday, now it's time to learn how to use it.

I have a week off work and I'll be staying at Lake Michigan about 30 miles north of Benton Harbor.  I'm thinking of riding the course if I get a chance.  I'm keeping up with my training plan but I'm still apprehensive about the run.  This week was my recovery week but the previous week I did a 13 mile run one day and a 52 mile bike ride another day.  It got me thinking how the heck am I going to do both in one day plus a 1.2 mile swim.  I'm counting on the taper before the race to work miracles.

That's a real bummer about your collarbone.  Same thing happened to my brother a couple years ago when he was riding on wet pavement.

I agree and I am hoping for some Taper week bonus strength, that and some added adrenaline from the race.  The swim and bike are not concerning me as much as the run after.

Is anyone shooting for a any specific time goals, or is survival the goal?  For me survival but I would like to finish inside of 6:30.

I'm going to finish.  That's it.  I can't put too much pressure on myself - I have no idea how it's going to feel.  However, I have really enjoyed the training and I will definitely be doing another HIM!

Subject: Aid Stations on Bike Course?
So how often are there aid stations on the bike course.  I'm trying to organize my nutrition plan - and I think I'm settled on carrying a concentrate bottle and mixing in my aero bottle with water from the aid stations.  I'm just trying to figure out how many there are and at what points?

I haven't been able to get the Gatorade Endurance Formula but Dave has graciously offered me some to train with - but I really like the way Accelerade works for me ... so I'm kind of nervous about making a switch now.

Also - will there be gels on the course or only GEF and water?  Will there be other stuff on the run course?  I've read through all the info on line - but I'm still not clear.  Also - is the "Special Needs" only for a full IM?  Do I have to worry about that too?

What about salt tabs?  I'm not a heavy sweater and I haven't ever trained with them.

Sorry - I'm just trying to get everything organized and planned so that I can stop worrying about everything...

Bike aid stations are at approximately 15, 30, and 45 miles. They usually have bottles of lemon-lime GEF, water, gels, and bananas. Slow down for the bike aid stations and stay wide if you are carrying your own hydration to avoid the congestion and the occasional dropped bottle. The same items on the run except they switch to orange GEF and the drinks are in paper cups. No sign of coke (whic would have been a life saver for me last year), chicken broth, pretzels, etc. No Special Needs for a 70.3, also no changing tent in transition.

Salt tabs are pretty controversial on BT. If you are not a heavy sweater and have not tried them then I would not mess with them, although Steelhead does tend to be hot for us northerners. GEF has about double the sodium and potassium so that helps.

Thanks Dave!!  What brand of gels will be out there?  I'm going to start using them on my runs so I don't have to carry my beans.  (I'll have those for the bike...

What brand of gels will be out there?

They use PowerBar gels. Lots of random flavors, some of which I don't like, so I usually stuff my trisuit pockets with some chocolate gels before the race just in case I end up with something fruity at the aid station like strawberry-kiwi.

If I can cross the finish line then it will be a successful day for me.  Even if i finish in last place.

Ok, so here's maybe a really stupid set of questions, but having never done this before I'm gonna ask anyway.....to get to the swim start, does everyone just walk along the beach barefoot?  Do most people wait to put their wet suit on till they get to the start or do most people do it in the transition area before heading out?  Also, I plan on racking my bike Friday night, but was thinking that I'd take my gear to the transition area that morning - how do you all plan on doing that?  Is it better to just put it in plastic bags and leave it overnight?  I figure I'll learn all this on the fly when I get there, but it'd be nice to have some idea of what's going to happen before then.

Coop, a lot will depend on where the swim is being started from and temps.  Last year the swim was going to start from the north and with the cold front and high winds plenty of folks had part of there wetsuit on for the walk and most seemed to walk down the beach.  Personally I'd get way to warm and would carry.

When the swim was canceled I walked back on a road as I didn't feel like walking on the beach again, so it was a mix of folks walking back on the beach or road.  If the swim start is at the south starting point (which is the normal start point), I'm not familiar with the roads in the area, but would assume walking down the beach would be fine.  It's a nice sandy beach.

I wouldn't leave my stuff laying around in transition area there are just to many people walking around and even though the area is watched your bag of stuff could easily be moved or missing in the morning and that would pretty much screw your first HIM race, take it with you on the shuttle from the parking area on Saturday morning.  I use a small transition bag and carry, my shoes, helmet, gels, bars etc.

Three years ago they had shuttle buses to the swim start, but I assume that this, unfortunately, won't happen again. It's a nice sandy beach to walk to either swim start, although soft and tiring on the legs. I would walk along the edge of the water where the beach is firmer, and I'd carry the wetsuit. Also I would not leave anything at transition overnight except for your bike, however....

One idea to get a little more sleep, skip the stress of shuttles and transition, and skip the beach walk, would be to set up your entire transition area on Friday and have someone drive you straight to the swim start. I'm not brave enough to do this as I'd be stressed about getting a flat over night, but I can't think of any reason why you have to go to transition in the morning.

Thanks for the tips Steve and Dave.  I can't imagine getting a whole lot of sleep that night anyway so I'll probably just take my gear there in the morning and then follow the herd.

I have not decided if I am going to rack my bike the night before.  Bikes can be racked the morning of the event.  I will need to inflate the tires on the morning of the event as they will bleed down overnight.  I guess I can always take my pump to transition.  I will not leave my transition bag overnight.  I would be a little worried about it, plus I will normally check it about 10 times before I leave the house/hotel to ensure i have everything for the day.

With regard to the swim, I will not put my wetsuit on until I am at the swim start location.  I would also overheat by having it on and walking over a mile.  I will have some family members along who can take my shoes or whatever I happen to have along with me from the start of the swim.

On the website they don't mention having gels available at the bike or run aide stations, they only mention Gatorade Endurance drinks.  I was planning on bringing along my own nutrition (gels).  I don't want to leave it to chance.
