Lol.  I had to muscle my way through 50m when I started swimming.

So the other 2050 were smooth sailing then, rockstar? ;-)  You're my hero!  I'm trying to get psyched up for a 5:30 Spin class...

arny - 2009-01-06 1:54 PM Hi Samantha I think everyone who does not have a swim background has had to "muscle through" initially. A good coach will take the muscle out(over time)and put the smoothness in. I watch my kids and they make it look effortless, BUT they have had hundreds of hours of consistent coaching and group workouts. A good coach really makes a huge difference... Glad to hear the new place is gonna work for you...good way to start the New Year. You are providing motivation for me at a time when I am struggling, so I thank you. Ann

Yay Ann go!!  I didn't do drills today, let's use Michael for inspiration instead!

Well, I meant when I first was learning how to swim (about a year ago)!  The first time I got inthe pool, I couldn't make it from one end to the other (25yd).  That was pretty humbling for someone who had run several marathons by that point.

And, frankly, swimming is still very humbling.  If I'm your hero, then the 12 year old girls who cruise by me in the pool as if I were standing still are dieties to you (and me!).

Right now, every time I swim, I just think something like your signature line.  The 'dolor' part is forefront in my mind, though. ;-)

You are kidding, that's an amazing improvement!  Just shows what hard work can achieve!  The funny thing about Tri-life is there are so many humbling things, but we all just keep coming back for more punishment, haha :-)   That brings to mind the 60 Minutes when Anderson Cooper did a piece on Michael Phelps and actually got in the pool with him and got smooooked.

On another note, I picked these up in the TAN, and thought I'd share in case people are looking for discount equipment:

steepandcheap.com - closeouts on outdoor equipment and clothes.

chainlove.com - same but for bike stuff.

Hi everyone! Well the holiday's are over and it's time to finally get my butt in gear. I got on the treadmill this morning for the first time since before Thanksgiving. 3.5 miles/37 minutes; no heart attacks to report. :-) Getting into the pool tomorrow for the first time since WAAAAAY before Thanksgiving. Let's hope the YMCA doesn't have any HARPOONS! Diet has been so-far-so-good since 1/1/09. Goodbye pumpkin pie and stuffing... hello Quaker Oatmeal with bananas! Good bye beer & martinis... hello protein shakes (I think I have the shakes!). My first Olympic tri is only 6 months away. No turning back now!!!

Swimming is still my very weak point. Unfortunatly, both my daughters are extremely strong swimmers, which means that I get a lot of... um... laughter when I mention my splits.

I do get the job done though.

I think we all owe Samantha three cheers for starting one of the longest threads of the off season.  Laughing  (Next time, add some comments about forefoot striking and weight training, and the thread will last forever)

Oh, and yes, they are jerks.

Hi Bill.  You're definitely not alone!  (I haven't lost my holiday weight yet, but I'm hoping it happens soon -- the workouts have been ramped up, and I'm just waiting for the screaming metabolism to kick in...)

Go get it in the pool.  My motto about swimming (and you're welcome to borrow it) is:  if you're not drowning, you're swimming.

So... what's everyone got on the plate for this weekend?

If I don't wimp out, I'll do a 30-40 mile bike ride north of San Francisco and then a medium run on Sunday. I need to start getting back in the habbit of working out, and to start getting my daughter ready for high school swimming season and for her first Ironman.

It's just that 50 degrees feels so cold these days. I used to bike in 30 degree weather in college, but those days are LONG behind me.

Michael - OMG it jsut will NOT die... I didn't mean to stir up a ruckus!  Though, looks like the Pearl Izumi marketing brainiacs really earned their money on that one!

Bill - LMAO @ hoping the Y doesn't have harpoons

Brian - As far as my weekend workouts, I have a 7:30 AM spin class with my friend Sue on Saturday and then my Sunday session with my BFF/Run Coach Jon.  he's brutal but the workouts are awesome.  Endurance and speedplay internixed with core training and stretches. Kind of demented that I am looking forward to it, haha...

For tonight, everyone's favorite: SWIM DRILLS! lol  I have found that my base plan that I started with isn't really working with my gym schedule (e.g my spin classes are available M,W,F,S but my bike workouts are scheduled for Tues/Thurs). So, I am using them as a guide for volume/types of activity for the week instead of day to day.  Guess that's the issue with template workouts - but I think as long as I stay focused this will not be an issue!

This weekend i have a swim saturday morning, ride 40 miles or so in 30 or below temp lol.  Sunday do a little longer run (which is still very short to me) and do some major core work since i just signed up for a 12 hour adventure race.  Maybe go for a mountain bike ride if i have time.

It's called the "Bonk Hard Chill".  It's in the Lake of the Ozarks state park in Arkansas.  Very beautiful area, but VERY hilly too.  Me and 3 other guys that are doing IMLouisville this year decided it would be a pretty fun and challenging way to kick off the training season.  Here is the website for the race.  http://www.bonkhardchill.com/bhc06/

I'm in the middle of buying some new gear for the race, so thats always fun.

Oh, that does look like fun, if it wasn't in the middle of the Midwest's winter. I shiver everytime I think about the two or three weeks in the winter when people just didn't go outside in central Illinois.

bhoover10001 - 2009-01-08 7:44 AM So... what's everyone got on the plate for this weekend?

Weekend for me:  'long' run (5 miles -- that's my 'long' run right now) and a time trial (by myself, not competition) on the bike to assess where I'm at.  I've never done a truly all-out effort on the bike before, so that should be interesting.  I just hope that the weather cooperates.

Biking north of SF, eh?  Sounds nice.  I mostly bike on an army base, which, as you might imagine, is not a gold mine of beautiful scenery, but it's a good, safe, place to bike.

My weekend? Hmmmm. I have 3 young daughters, so weekend workouts are not easy to come by. Probably just a 30-45 minute treadmill run on Saturday (snow is on its way starting tonight and I hate running in the cold. Then Sunday, I'm going to park my butt in front of the TV and watch my Eagles CRUSH the NY Giants . All-in-all, I am very pleased with my first full week of training in '09 ... 6 hours of cardio. Have a great weekend everyone!

I lied, lake of the ozarks is in Missouri not arkansas lol!  The temp will probably be a low of around 25 and a high in the upper 30's.  Really not that cold especially will all the crap you are required to carry with you at all times.  It would be a little cold if i fell in the water from the canoe lol.

OK, here's a random comment.  My pool was so cold this evening that I left with 1000m to go because my lips were BLUE and I couldn't feel my fingers.  Anybody else have this problem?  (I swim at two different pools.  The other one is too warm.  Why can't they get the temp exactly as I want it? Wink )

Random question:
How do YOU(anyone) beat the mental challenge of keeping the butt in the saddle when using the bike trainer? It is so hard to be disciplined to complete 1:15...does anyone have any brilliant suggestions?

I have spinervals dvds, music, Mr Bean dvds etc...but I am really finding it a challenge this year. I thought maybe heating the room would help, as the trainer is in the unheated(but finished and insulated) rec room??....

Any input for distractions?
Ann
