I'm officially paid. Haven't booked a room or flights, but plan on making a nice weekend of the event.

If only i could find some hills in Tx to practice for the ride...

I plan to add some stair climbing to my workouts the month before the race to help with that big climb they have.  "The ladder", I think it's called.

It's the 'sand ladder' and your split time for it is recorded on your results.

I'm in at Edwards...  Only the flight needs to be arranged yet.

Queen with private bathroom (that's a must since I could be pretty funky after the race...)

The 11th-15th...  I hope they don't mind me parking my bike in the room...

Who else is staying there?

I'm in too and staying at Edwards 11th-15th.  I will certainly see you at happy hour

We have plenty of time to worry about it, but we need to set up a meeting time for everyone at BT for sure!!!!

Does anyone know how I can volunteer for this?  I want to try and get in through the lottery next year and just want to experience it first as a volunteer.

Just found out I got in on the 2nd lottery pull on 1 Feb. Really, really, really hoping I can convince the wife to go along with this, maybe even work our Griswold family vacation around San Fransico that weekend. I am thinking of renting a bike instead of shipping mine out from SC to CA and back. I won't be a contender for anything. Anyone have bike rental recommendations or thoughts? In addition, I have a sleeveless wetsuit, will that work, or is a full sleeve a must?

Thanks!

I'm thinking the water is going to be too cold for a sleeveless.

I sat in my pool after a long run (46 degrees).  That was painfully cold.  I'm hoping that 58-60 degrees feels better.  I will have to remind myself to jump in the pool when it warms up to that temp to see how it feels.

I think the water is going to be closer to 50-55 degrees.  Either way, its going to be really cold!

I'm in through the lottery. Now I have a few weeks to convince hubby that Alcatraz and an Ironman in the same year are affordable. At least they're a few months apart.
Plane tickets from to SF are really low right now.

I trying not to freak out over the swim. Guess I'll be practicing jumping off the deep end of the pool and swimming for the next few months.

Have your husband don a shark suit and swim around in the pool while you prepare to jump in.............Laughing

Make no mistake about it. Jumping into 50-55 degree water will be a shock to the system. The one positive is we will swim with a current which will move us along quickly. I did the Boise 70.3 last year and the water was just as cold. The absolute best thing I did was get in the water for the practice swim the day before. It allowed me to have some comfort level with the water before the race. There will be a sponsored practice swim available to us.

I wore a hood and booties (diver booties) and put some vaseline on my face which helped tremendously. There were several who did not make it 100 yards before calling it quits.

To the person (Catwoman) considering Escape and Ironman in the same year. You might as well go for it. You got a slot and have already paid for Ironman.

I think my dad and I might make a road trip out of it from TX to SF.  We both have several nights of hilton points saved up, so the hotel should be cheap (if not free).  Driving should help with the cost as well, since I won't have to ship my bike or rent a car in SF.

I'm not too worried about the water, especially if I can get in the day before or at least get into a lake around here while it is still cold.

I'm almost ready to take the "plunge" and sign up for Alcatraz! We went ahead and made a reservation at the Edwards. We decided to go with the shared bathroom option to save money. When is everyone else arriving in SF?

Check out the Alcatraz triathlon store on the main website. Everything is half off. I picked up a mouse pad and a hat.

Which neoprene cap would you recommend? The Waterworks website recommends Mack's Earplugs. Does anyone know which ones are the best?

Has anyone worn booties? My main concern about the race is the water temperature. I have Raynaud's.

So, I have thrown in a couple sessions of stairmaster to get a feel for the sand ladder!  (that, and I have a stair climb race this weekend...)

Hey, gang.  Looks like the Edwards II is under new management....

I got an e-mail from them saying they were under new management and that they don't take Discover anymore and since I made my reservation with a Discover card they would need a new credit card number.

Um, this obviously sounds like a phishing scam so I went through google to their webpage.  No mention on the webpage but all the contact information matches.  So I am going to try to call the front desk later and verify.

But looks like all the early race morning amenities from last year might be out.

I got a call from Edwards yesterday.  They said they didn't have my card on file and needed it.  It sounded Phishy to me too, so I was going to check their website and make sure the numbers matched up before calling.

I M doing the same thing - Alcatarz and IMWI - will be fun

and here in Wisconsin, cold is Zero.  I have been running outside in blowing snow storms - not too bad if bundled right - thus i definitely will have the long sleeve action for the water

Seemed ligit to me, so I gave it to them...

They never mentioned that to me...  Just the upgrading the reservation system.

I think it's ok, but do you have anything else to report?

I never thought about it, but I had some recent ID theft.   I wonder if it could have come with all this transition?  I doubt it though...

And if they were only asking for my e-mail I wouldn't even be hesitating!  But they want a credit card!

I'm gun-shy...I just had a card stolen a few weeks ago.

I had a crazy dream that I went to what I thought was a pre race swim for Alcatraz, to find out it was the actual start of the race!  I didn't have my bike or running gear and was devistated I couldn't race (especially after droping 400 smackers).

I figured I would do the swim, but didn't have my swim cap, so they DQed me.

I woke up in a panic, but soon realized I would NEVER let that happen!
