First time posting on the forums. And, Augusta 70.3 will be my first HIM. Just want to say thanks much for all the info...especially to The Cube (and others) for such a detailed report of the bike route! Happy training!

Rusty Ironman - 2009-08-03 8:07 AM Its mostly my layout, with the help of Randy Duteau of Sports Council.  I cannot compete for injury reasons, am doing relay swim, but I would love to race that course. First and last 17 miles relatively flat, only thing is, might be windy on the last 17.  The middle section adds a variety of hills, up and down. Some short and steeper, but two lovely downhills.  the gray mare climb is 1.25 miles long from the dam at bottom, big ringable. The hill I find mentally toughest is the first .75 mile climb on Horse creek.  An elite triathlete from ocala road it with me (well he had to go slow) and he loved it. He and his wife thought it was very scenic, made him forget that it was a race course.

arni.

Hey Arnold! I thought that was you.  It's Janelle!  Glad to see you'll be competing on a relay!

Tri14kix - 2009-07-31 1:43 PM 134 BT'ers to race Augusta HIM so far? I want to have an after party but my neighborhood cannot support that load of cars. Maybe everyone can bike or run over...hah!

Maybe we can do a post race party downtown at Nacho Mama's??

All options are open. We would pack the place for sure.

After riding the course a few times now, I also am finding the Horse Creek hill the least fun.

I have to agree- I think that's the worst one. It's definitely the "never ending climb".

We also looking for a place to do a BIG breakfast the morning after.
Nacho mamas sounds fun to cap off the night after the awards party downstairs in the marriott.
Dinner might be room service depending on how the wifeie feels after her first 70.3.

Rusty Ironman - 2009-08-04 3:27 PMI was trying to talk the race director to switch the swim to an upstream swim, starting at Goodale Landing area, finishing at current location.  There is a big field down there which would allow easier entry to start.  Plus, swimming in a big upstream current would give me a better workout.

What do you BT'rs think

Hey you would miss the bridge abutments too !
haha... good one!The info on the bike course has been helpful. How's the river? Is it deep, shallow, clear, murky, etc...

I know who you are and I'm pretty sure I could find out where you lived if you convinced the race director into an upstream swim

That brings a good question- how is the swim going to start?  Does it start at the boat ramp near 5th Street or upstream of that?

The River isn't too bad - it is deep and not clear. The current is pretty quick too, I've only jumped in it one time about a month ago didn't really swim though it was more of a cool down after a 5k race

A BIG place for breakfast?  How about Cracker Barrell?  There's one off of 1-20 on the way to Atlanta. It would be a few exits from the downtown/Washington Road exists- not that hard to get to at all.  We do have a Sunrise Grill in N. Augusta (which would be closer since it's jsut over the river from downtown) but I don't think their food is all that great.  If I think of another places I'll let you know, or other locals could chime in here.

I think for Nacho Mama's you can actually reseve the upstairs portion.  I can look into that. I don't think they are normally open on Sunday nights but I'll have to check.  Hopefully they would take the opportunity with all hungry/celebrating athletes and be open.  What time is the awards party at the Marriot??

Check out the thread The Cube wrote regarding the bike course.  It's in the GA forum- that should give you a good idea what to expect.

I would attach the link but I don't know how   I sent you an inspire with the link.

Well, its done, its changed to an up current swim!  Hip Hip Hooray......Better buy one of those endless pools and turn the current up real high   http://www.endlesspools.com/

You're not serious are you??

I think what they need to do for the swim is do 1/2 with the current and 1/2 against it.  Not only would it "even" it out, but then you wouldn't have to worry about the course being short or adding a bunch of zig zags- which that itself will create a huge bottleneck.

They could always have us swim down the river on one side and then turn around and go upstream to the finish, or something like that.  I personally don't have an issue going against the current if at some point we swim with the current.
