The water is cold.  Last year it was 58°.  I would say to go with sleeves if you can.  Xterra has some good deals on their entry-level suits right now.  I think you can pick up a Vortex 3 for $150-200.

The hills are moderate for the first part, but there is a considerable incline (maybe 12%) around mile 30.  It's pretty steep and goes for about 3/4 of a mile.  Then there's the long grueling climb from mile 32 to 37.  There are a few more hills later on, but the worst is over by mile 45.  From there, it's pretty smooth sailing towards the coast.  I was cooked by the time I got through the hills last year and it did seem like there was a bit of a headwind coming back.  For some reason my legs didn't feel quite as fresh running out of T2 as they did running out of T1.

Not sure if you've seen this, but it's available on the official site:
http://www.ironmancalifornia.com/bike.html

There's a pretty cool link from this page to compare Oceanside with other IM bike courses.  Makes me feel better about Coeur d'Alene.

The first 28 miles are bikeable if Pendleton is open, the inland section is not open prior to the race.

That's right.  If you bring your ID, they'll let you ride the section closest to the freeway, through the Las Pulgas gate and along Stuart Mesa Rd.  I've done it on the weekends with the Tri Club.  I'm not sure exactly the hours when they'll let you on base.  I've heard it's 9-3?

There are a few upcoming events at Camp Pendleton that will give a preview to some of the sections.  The sprint duathlon is the week before the 70.3 (I'm still racing it), but the bike race is on Feb 27: http://www.camppendletonraces.com/bike.html

You still won't get to see the inland section, which is where the pointy end of the course exists, but they're fun, well organized events.  The marines do a very good job supporting their races.

spigreed - 2010-01-27 8:32 PM How much distance are we talking about in the sand?

Its about 100 yards almost 1/8 mile with loose sand and compacted at spots with a small uphill, you will run through it going out and comming in, so doing two loops you will run through sand 4 times.

Well, if it's all about the cap then maybe I'll just have to be fast NEXT year! Seriously, good for you. I'm feeling slow lately.

And, as far as riding on base, I think you can get on earlier than 9, but I can't swear to which days. I've been up there pretty early on a weekend morning.

Can't run, so idea was I'd be in good biking and swimming shape at least, and I'd be able to ride the closed course.  Turns out I am neither, so looks like I'll be taking my $75  Bummer

In other news, it's now the Rohto California 70.3   Rohto??????

Wetsuits are limited to a maximum of 5mm thickness.  This means the De Soto Water Rover is out. Just an FYI.

As of the time of this post, that rule (number 7 on page 9) has been taken out.  There is no (as of now) mm restriction

with 6 weeks to go is anyone else getting stupid thoughts in their minds when training?

This has really been eating at me .

Should i shave my head this weekend or next weekend. I can't decide if i like the way my head looks/feels after being cut with 5 weeks of growth or 6 weeks. Maybe i should just do it Wednesday night and make it 5 1/2 weeks of growth.

I just had that realization this morning after my long run...it's getting so close!  Hope everyone's training is going well.  I have a long bike planned for Monday and am hoping for nice weather like last Monday...luckily, this rain storm hasn't been as bad as predicted!

Good News!! I have it on pretty good authority that the run course for CA WILL NOT be on the sand this year!! A friend of mine did the multisport camp with race organizers. I'm so glad. Wasn't looking forward to pulled calf muscles and/or sand in the shoes!

Can't wait to get down there. Still have to ride on my trainer every session as cycling in the snow is not my idea of a good time.  I'm a little worried about the hills as I've cranked it up on my trainer for hill repeats but it's just not the same as riding for real.  I've upgraded my wheels considerably and dropped 25 lbs since my last race so hopefully I can just glide right up there.

Great news about the sand!  Hopefully it's true and we can stay on the pavement.

Anyone have any recommendations for a post-race celebratory dinner, I'll have my 8 month old with me so I need an all ages place.

Can't wait to see everyone in the fun and sun of California!

I would say the Stone Brewery in Escondido. Great kids menu, gardens to walk around and check out and great beer and food for dinner.

Great news ... this section got old last year. I know the surf has been up higher because of the storms, I wonder if this is the case this year. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if we'll see some faster run splits because of this.

My rear derailleur cable snapped during my long ride today.  I am happy it chose today to break instead of during the race.  I am also happy that I missed out on PCH flooding from the tide and surf at Bolsa Chica and Sunset Beach.  However, I am not happy about missing out on 3 hours of riding...

This is my first HIM so am pumped (and a little nervous).  I've researched as much as I can on the course (incl. race reports as well some great overviews that several posters)

For any of you who have participated in this California 70.3 before, are there any special or peculiar things that really stand out to you from the course, weather, transitions, etc.?  I'm pretty familiar with the bike course from some descriptions provided, and also know about the potential sand-run (which now sounds like will not be an issue).  But any other "heads up" items related to this race would be much appreciated!

Thanks and hope your last four weeks of training go smoothly!
