Alrighty add a 2100 yard swim tonight.  I am now beat.  Why is it that a nice lite workout during IM training totally drains you after an itty bitty month off with no workouts.  The mean thing about the swimspa is that it doesn't let you slack on that last 500 yards of the workout.  It patiently keeps you at the programmed pace for the alloted time, no mercy.

I set my monthly goals to finish off my annual goals, if I don' t make the monthly goals I also miss the annual goals.  Last year I swam 100,000 yards and I am shooting for 250,000 this year.  Getting the run to 1300 miles was/is  tougher though.

Oh well, day off tomorrow before the mean weekend runs.

Anyone have any races coming up in the next couple months?

Saturday... PCT 17k trail run.  Looking like it might be in the rain.

Hey Tim, I'm doing the PCT 50k on Saturday! I'm in Bend, OR tonight... slowly making my way down to Redwood City. Hope I see you there, so I can say "Hi" in person! Thanks for being our fearless leader!

Sounds like everyone is doing great! Nice job Frosties! I'll have a bit of a slow start this month due to the 50k this weekend, but I have every intention of meeting my goals by the end of the month. I LOVE challenges because there's nothing more motivating than not wanting to let down my team!

Good morning Frosty Force!  I'm all caught up on my post reading here.  Seems to be an awesome team we have.  I see familiar names and new ones...I just love the challenges.  They really keep me going.

I'm training for my first full mary in March, so running is my main goal.  I'm not big on biking in the cold weather, so I put swimming as goal #2.  Any running advice is very much appreciated...I'm slow and still learning.

Bio:  32, married with a 5yo boy, 2 dogs (weims) and a cat.  This was my 2nd year of tris and I love them!  Main goal for all of the maddness is weight loss (not doing well with that part yet).

Happy DU-ing.

That is some impressive running Roni with 26 and 28 mile runs in back to back weeks .. in practice!  You really make it hard to whine about a cold 17 mile run on a weekend in comparison.  Let us know how the 50k compares to a marathon in case we ever get that um ambitious... crazy... one of those words 8).

Crews, looking over your logs it looks like the main thing to increase your speed is just to keep getting in the good miles you have been getting in recently.  From the couch I saw some gains in my own training running after about 1000 miles (in 10 months) and then additional gains after another 1000 to 1500 miles running consistently 20 to 40 miles per week.  I am starting my 3rd year of triathlon and added speed work once a week for my run after a year and a half of base work.  It would be cool if you hit the (calculate pace) button on your workouts so it will show your pace each run in your logs.  I am too lazy to calculate them to look for trends of improvement 8).  Welcome to the team.

Hey gang,
I've updated the spreadsheet with my goals. Should be pretty doable I think. Tonight's another swim session. My next swim/strength session is Saturday...and we're getting some flurries today. Ugh. Time for me to get winter running gear and start doing parkour.

Thanks Bao!  I'm going to keep going...and hope to see gains eventually!  I actually do hit the calc button to see my pace, but then I erase it b/c I'm a little embarrassed about it.  It usually averages 15 min/mi.  I started with a walk 1 min./run 1 min. ratio and now I'm up to running 5 or 6 and walking 1 depending on the mileage.

I was pretty close to that 2 years ago, is all good.  Hopefully no one is judging you on your current pace.  It is all just about consistently working at it and then seeing that improvement.  Triathlon is a wierd sport where folks are encouraging to others no matter what their pace or ability.  I passed a guy in the last 2 miles of the IM run in my age group and he said, finish it strong bro.  A lady passed me in the last 1 mile of a 30k trail run and encouraged me to keep hammering it.  I like to look at the paces for run over the 4 weeks that show on the screen so I can compare my last 4 long runs or whatever to see how the pace is.  It makes it easier for me to notice things like my pace getting slower on my long run indicating that I am overdoing it during the week and need to let my body recover more.

It gets discouraging that it takes 3 years of consistent work to see really big changse in bike and run.  Swim... well we shall see about swim, it is a different sort of beast.

Hi team! I'm here and excited!

Just registered for my first IM and am definitely on a post-registration high. The swim is already intimidating me so I'm going to focus on that in the off-season. What else?

I'm April. Live in balmy Austin TX where we are expecting UP TO AN INCH of snow tomorrow and people are getting worried. We might even get to skip work. Seriously.... No worries, I plan on being at the pool bright and early before the "snow" even has a chance to start.

Roni keep an eye out for me.  50k will start earlier than the 17k, but I plan on getting there early to check things out.  I'll be sporting white FMRC visor and bib#272.  Looks like your #428.  Hopefully, we can chat.

Also, be ready.  Steve (baowolf) found out that PCTs elevation profile is quite erroneous.  I took his advice and pre-ran the 17k coarse and discovered at least an extra 1,000 ft of climbing.  Not to mention, they had to make some changes due to trail closures.

See ya there!

Welcome April.  Wow, IM Arizona.  Congats, you made the commitment, now the fun (pain) begins.  The swim leg of the IM is what keeps me in check.  As much as I want to the distance, I need way more time in the pool and open water to pull off the 2.4.

Hey there! I had a nice 2 hour bike ride in the morning followed by a 1 hour swim tonight. Swimming isn't part of my challenge this month though. I just started swim training tonight with a local tri group it meets 2X a week.

Welcome April.  I did my first IM this year after learning freestyle like from scratch 14 months before.  25 yards was painful with as much water as air coming into my lungs.  For the swim you don't have to be that fast, just be able to comfortably do the distance without using up too much energy.  You will be amazed what you can do if you put in the training.

Roni, totally add 2000-3000 feet to your expected elevation gain on that 50k and pace accordingly.  Also memorize the trail as they poorly mark the trails and make sure you have lots of fluids with you and refresh it at aid stations, for my 30k they only had 2 water stops and temps were mid 80's.  Everyone I talked to missed at least one turn for 1/4 to 2 miles of  extra mileage.

Nice bike/swim combo, you are going to sleep well tonight.

If  you are in Bend now, you will be driving probably within 13 miles of my house on your way south.  I am near Alturas, just east of where 139 meets up with 299 where you will be going west.  My main bike route is along 139 towards Klamath.

Good morning Team Force!

I'll be out and about in a bit. Just waiting for the tea and oatmeal to settle and then it's out into the cold. About 38F right now, with snow forecast for later. Yea snow, in southern Mississippi. Yikes, I better get going.

morning swims are amusing... you never know what you're going to throw into your duffel bag at 4:30 in the morning. on one of our probably coldest days of the year, i ended up with many extra pairs of underwear and no jacket. *shiver* guess that's an ok combo on a normal day though.

The distance doesn't bother me. It'll definitely be a challenge, but the real concern is the bashing. Swimming over and under and into people is a terrifying idea. How did you conquer that? Especially with such a short swim history?

Got in my run 4.7 miles with hills. Cold morning, but I felt strong and was happy to run. I feel like my recovery from the half is going well, another shortish run on Sunday and next week I am back into it with a 14 miler for my long run.

Way to go, Jen.  I find it a challenge to get out the door when it's in the 30's, but once you get started it's quite comfortable.  Hope you don't get any snow - does MS even keep any salt or sand around to treat the roads?

ATTENTION ALL DU-DECEMBER CHALLENGE PARTICIPANTS:

Make sure that you have your training data updated in your team spreadsheet by 10:00 PM US Central time (11 East, 9 Mtn, 8 Pacific - other parts of the world - you have to do the math...) on Sunday nights.  That would be Dec 6, 13, 20, and 27.  Each Sunday night I will publish a quick run down of the team standings!

If your team has injuries or illness, we can pro-rate the goals for days missed - however, please let me know before changing the goals.

Keep up the training!  Good luck to everyone!
