It looks like the summer in Dallas is going to be more brutal than normal, so I should be plenty prepared for the Cozumel heat/humidity by the time it rolls around.

Is anybody going to ship their bike to the race? The airline baggage charges are ridiculous.

I'd be interested in what you find out about shipping.  I would think that shipping would cost more and customs fees/paperwork could be a pain.  I think the plane is still the best option.  Maybe some of the people that did it last year will add some input.

Houston is miserable right now, I was running on the track at 7:30 last night and we were saying it was good training for Cozumel.

Didn't do it last year but we have a decent sized group going from Houston. So far from what we've been finding the plane seems cheapest. We're still looking, I'll let y'all know if we find anything better.

I'm a little worried about my bike getting there since I fly into Houston then to Cozumel.  I'm sure there were numerous people last year that had connecting flights and didn't have issues.

We ship gobs of boxes everyday at my company so we get some ok rates on shipping. When I ran what a bike would cost from Houston to Cozumel, it was over $400. I checked the continental website and they had some size stipulations, but if you can pack light enough and in a smaller bike box, it is closer to about $120 each way if I remember right. I will have to revisit the site and report back. Hope this helps.

In case anyone's curious, snorkels are not allowed at this race.  Mexico's version of the USAT differs on that point.

On a lark, I went hunting for an elevation profile for this ride.  I found last year's course(looks the same as this year).  The elevation change for all 3 loops combined is the same as the Redman HALF, which is a very flat race unto itself.  This amuses me.

See that little hill on the right?  That's the highest spot on the island (Coconuts).  And you don't go near that high

Any idea when this might sell out? I may have to withdraw from IMFL and will need to get permission from my command to travel to Mexico. If anyone is familiar with paperwork in the military, who knows how long that can take.

Hi,

My understanding is that last year (inagural yr) it did not sell out until beginning of Novemeber. However, I am now hearing lots of people who are signed up for IMFL thinking of changing it to Cozumel so I suspect this yr it may sell out much earlier.

Good Luck with the paper work....BP SUCKS!!! sorry...it just came out...

Happy training...

Not quite San Diego, but my roommate and I are in Orange County (Huntington Beach) and are both doing IM Coz.  I love Cozumel and absolutely can't wait to return.

Good luck with your training.

Thinking of signing up on a semi-whim after my husband swiched from IM FL to COZ.  I'm hoping my base from IM Lou lastwill make up for the lackluster training over the past few months.  I'm still undecided if I'm nuts or not...

I'm a little worried about my bike getting there since I fly into Houston then to Cozumel.  I'm sure there were numerous people last year that had connecting flights and didn't have issues.

US Airways now offfers a direct flight from Charlotte to Cozumel.  We did a direct flight from Charlotte to Cancun- I felt better not having to worry about my bike switching planes.  Also pay attention to the type of aircraft you will be on.  If any of your flights are on an "express jet" the airline does not have to take your bike on the same flight as you- it all depends if they have space or not.  They cannot gaurantee it will arrive with you- I spoke to a lady from Continental asking about bike transport and she brought this up and warned me.  So with that said, booking the earliest flight possible is a good idea.  Just in case your bike doesn't arrive with you on an express jet it would arrive on a later flight that same day

My husband and I didn't have any issues with flying with our bikes in either direction which really surprised us because we were expecting something to go wrong due to the horro stories we've heard before.  We used soft cases (Pika packworks) and avoided the overweight fee- which was AWESOME.  My bike is a 48 cm tri bike and it weighed in at  35lbs at check in- that was with all the padding, bubble wrap and packing paper I added in the case to protect it.  My husbands bike is larger and aluminum and still weighed under 50lbs when he checked his in.  Soft cases are the way to go- plus they are easier to carry and load up into taxis and such.

At the time Us Airways was a sponsor of IM and we were able to book our flights directly through the IM website and received a voucher to fly with our bikes for free.  They are no longer offer that discount anymore which is a bummer because it was a huge money saver for us traveling with TWO bikes.

Last year the IM Cozumel website highly recommended that you don't ship your bike.  I don't know of a place in Couzmel that would accept them??  Also, customs could hold up the delivery of the bike and it's delivery date can cary- I wouldn't recommend shipping it at all.

Thanks RunnerGirl for the info. I am going to travel with my bike as I already have enough nightmares regarding things going wrong at the race itself..lol!!! I have also been wondering about cases, soft or hard and it seems like you and the hubby had good luck with your softcase. I will look into these cases.

Thanks again and I hope you are recovered from your recent IM which by the way you did awesome!!!!
