Since I will be living off the course can anyone tell me what flavor(s) HEED and which brand of energy bars were served? I lived off the course and I believe it was subtle melon and then they had a mix of Powerbars and Hammer bars as I recall...I trained using both and had NO problem living off the course and would highly recommend it unless you have special nutritional needs---one important point is that the first aid station is about 25-30 miles in (approximately) and for most (except the super speedy) that's MORE then one hour into the bike so plan accordingly---I know one guy I passed was complaining thinking he had missed it and was struggling for nutrition!! I started with a couple of scoops of Heed in my aerobottle and a throw away bottle of water in my cage and a powerbar (from the goody bag) in my pocket----the rest came from the course! Someone asked about toe covers on the bike---I DID use them---I wear Specialized trivent shoes and they let it LOTS of air and I don't wear socks---I picked up the Perfomance brand neoprene toe covers that just cover the front of you shoes (maybe $15) and used those and was great for the whole ride----I agree that you don't need too much clothing for the bike!!! |

Expert 1394 Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread shellabree - 2010-05-29 1:11 PM The tips in this thread are terrific! Thank you! All of my training will be done in South FL and we can still get into the 90s during the month of October, so trying to figure out hydration/nutrition/what to wear for what I would consider to be a 'cold weather' race is going to be extra tough; hence, I really appreciate all of the suggestions. I'm actually most concerned about what to wear on the bike. I don't think I've ever biked in conditions colder than 65F (and 65F is a rarity), so I'm clueless here. I noticed that someone mentioned using a windbreaker. Maybe arm warmers as well? Toe covers? Gosh, I'm really nervous about how to dress for the bike. Would love to hear some more suggestions on what folks typically wear while cycling during this time of the year/these type of temperatures. I will be maling a return trip to Wilmington this coming November to have another bash at a HIM. I just signed up this morning. Last year I did the HIM as my 1st HIM to end my 1st season at tri's. Shellabree: Remember you will be starting 90-100 min after the Full so temps will have increased at that point. Air temp was a little chilly waiting for the HIM start, but I was standing in my full wetsuit and felt fine. I had a 1 piece trisuit under my wetsuit and once the wetsuit came off the only other thing I put on was my cycling shoes (trivents like someone mentioned earlier) and then once I got those off my feet I put running shoes on and temp wise I was good to go. Figuring out what to wear is a pain and you should take options, just keep in mind that it will be warmer getting on the bike than what Skippy and some others mention just because of the later HIM start. |

Expert 1706 NoVA | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Great point grkid!!!! The full starts at 7am and I had a sub-45' swim so I was on the bike about 40' before the HIM swim even started! By 8:30am (HIM start time) I was thinking about taking the thin gloves I had on off---so just a trisuit or shorts/shirt would be fine for the HIM---you'll also be racing at a faster pace/higher effort then I was for a full. I never gave this any thought since I really didn't consider/think about the HIM but this is about an ideal HIM weather wise---by 8:30 it's warm enough and yet even during the run it won't be too hot! |

Champion 7595 Columbia, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread grkid: Sort of, I guess, though I'm pretty happy with my long run pacing by and large. I was just thinking about it and thought I'd see what others do. It never hurts to compare. (But -- and here's the slightly crazy part of this whole deal -- I am only just able to start a very little running right now due to a fractured hip earlier this year. I have been doing a lot of pool running, though, and fortunately my run tends to be fairly strong.) Porfirio: No -- I got in under the wire before the price increase. I had been wavering before then but the price increase was enough to make me pull the trigger. |

New user 1 | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread I am doing the full this year. It will be my first Iron distance. I have heard great things about the race overall, so I am excited about it. Question, and maybe there is already a thread about it, what different training plans are other using? Are you following a plan from BT, or something different? Just wondering. Stefany |

Champion 7595 Columbia, South Carolina | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread I used the BT Silver level IM plan for my first IM. (I couldn't do the swim volume early on, but worked up to it, and otherwise pretty much followed the plan.) I felt that it definitely met my needs. This time I'm rolling my own. |

Extreme Veteran 546 Oakland, Florida | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread I am using the silver IM BT Plan. I sart June 27 26 week countdown. It would be great here since we don't have a lot of people if we all posted of our weekly volume when everyone begins the training. Any thoughts? I did a 3 hr rolling 58 mile ride this morning and worked out with weights. This afternoon I am going to the y to swim 45 mins. Just trying to keep my fitness up from the HIM I did a couple of weeks ago. I still have about 3 weeks til I start the 26 week countdown if my math is correct. |

Sounds great, but ... isn't it 23 weeks (from now) until B2B? And most of the BT IM plans are 20 weeks, so yes, you'd have 3 weeks to one of those ... but it's definitely not 26 weeks from June 27 to November 13. I'm doing 3 weeks of Don Fink's Be Iron Fit (a 30-week plan, wish I'd been able to start from the beginning and do this one), then easing into one of the BT 20-week IM plans. Oh, yes, by the way, I am in for B2B full!!!!! It will be my first IM. |

Pro 4360 Baton Rouge area | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Iron Distance : Official Thread Similar story here. Starting the 20 week BT IM plan on June 26th. Actually have been taking it easy since my HIM and have done one sprint since April. I am starting week 7 of Jorges bike program and will continue with it probably into July. I am doing the swim and bike legs of a relay team. Trying to ramp back up my swimming for the start of the plan. |

We flew into Myrtle Beach and drove to Wilmington. It's about 75 miles and an easy drive. Another guy from Michigan flew from a smaller airport in mid Michigan into Wilmington, but had at least 3 stops, sounded like a headache compared to my non stop on Spirit out of Detroit. Myrtle's airport is nice, small and easy to get in and out of, and has plenty of rental cars. Edited by rottieguy 2010-06-06 4:47 PM |

I finished a more or less base training period last week, and started more or less IM training this week. I'm doing 3 build phases of 4 weeks each, followed by 3 weeks peak, taper, then race week for my 'A' race (the Myrtle Beach Halfmax Championships). Then I'll figure out how to get from there to B2B. (This might sound a bit odd, but the B2B IM is not really my 'A' race this year. I still plan to be in pretty good shape for it though.) |
