Not this year but if it is half as good as last year you'll have the time of your life! I've never met nicer people or been in a more organized race.

srichards428 - 2010-12-24 2:21 AM I'am from Southern Illinois!  I live in Salem....South of Effingham and North of Mt.Vernon.  The land of the cornfields!  Makes bike rides rather interesting observing all the different cows.  lol

I'm in O'Fallon, MO (about 30 miles west of St Louis).  Are you anywhere near Carlyle Lake?  I did a sprint triathlon there last May.  It was my first OWS.  Great race, I'd love to do it again.

Well, I had plans to get up this morning and go outside for a run before the snow started.  I've been doing all my runs on a TM but since I only had an easy 3 miles scheduled for today, I figured I'd bundle up and get some fresh air.  Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate - it was already snowing when I woke up.  We're supposed to get 2-4 inches before it stops tonight.  Looks pretty and it'll be nice to have a white Christmas, but I really don't want to take a chance on slipping so it'll be the TM for me again today.  I may head to the gym though instead of running at home.  That way I can maybe try to get swim in too.  I'll have to see what the roads are like.

I am thinking my diet is total crap for my new regime.  I'm eating fairly healthy over all but have been reading that I should be adding a bit more protien to my diet especially right after a run.

I generally am not eating at all after a run, even in the morning.  I did pick up some multi grain bagels and peanut butter to eat after runs but haven't "gotten around" to actually making them after a run.

So question is ... should I be adding more protien to my diet and if so what quick, easy, food based ideas do you have.  ( I won't take supplements or eat liver but open to most anything else)

Yes, more protein is always good, but don't go overboard. A good way to get protein would be nuts & peanut butter(don't be scared off by the high fat, as its pretty much all good fat, but again, don't over do it), fish, chicken, beans, lentils. I'm actually trying to find more sources myself. With peanut butter go natural or watch out for all the sugar

You do want to get in protein within an hour or so of working out. Post workout is also a good time to get in some carbs as your glycogen stores have been depleted.

Hi Maria! That's so funny, I feel like I could hop out of this office chair right now and run 26.2 miles, no dirt off my shoulders.  But the thought of riding my bike 112 miles  (or even 50 miles)? eeeeek! LOL! I guess we all have our strengths/weaknesses!   With HIM under your belt, you'll do just fine in a marathon I'm sure!!

I'm so tempted to register for the NC warrior dash, but it's right before Rev3 CP, and my luck...I'd hurt myself again, LMAO!!!

RunFasterMommy - 2010-12-23 11:07 AM I just wonder if it's a silly thing to attempt in only my second season of triathlon.    Then again, there is never much rhyme or reason to what I do in the endurance world, haha!

Hi Heather.  Your avatar caught my eye.  I did that same race last May in GA and have a similar photo!  They've added a new location here in NC for August next year.

Your post also caught my eye.  Absolutely NOT silly!  As fit as you are running marathons?  The funny thing is that I have done two HIMs and I am apprehensive about doing my first full marathon this spring!  I may need YOU for a mentor! (seriously).

I generally run in the morning and unless I do a long run (13+ miles), I eat a normal breakfast without worrying about carbs or protein.  Anything over that and I try to drink low fat chocolate milk or skim milk.  It is the perfect post run drink.  It has the perfect (so I'm told) combination of carbs and protein.

I can't tell from your post if you do not eat breakfast at all or if you just don't eat right after a run.  If it is the former, IMO, you should eat even if it is just a bowl of whole grain cereal or oatmeal.  If it is the latter, I think eating right after (within 30 mins) really depends on how far you run and/or the intensity of the run.

Questions and comments.

McFuzz - Where in central Il?   I go to Salem to visit family several times per year.  Are you nearby?
Triathlynne - Falls City is so close to my last location in Snoqualmie.  Miss it so.  You have the coolest name on BT.

Quick question for everyone.  To get started on the bike indoors does it matter if I use a spin class bike or any cardio bike?  Also what type of cadence should I use?  Should I go with interval or just keep a steady pace getting a feel for riding.

Cool.  Does he live on campus or off?  I'm less than 2 blocks from campus.  I know a few EE students, but don't think any are Juniors.  I've been an advisor to the Alpha-Phi-Omega chapter on campus for the last 5-6 years.

You do come visit him at least once a year, right?

Peoria.  We've been through Salem once or twice and there are a couple triathlons around Springfield that I've considered doing (but haven't).  Let me know when you come visit.  Might be a nice excuse for a l-o-n-g ride.

I can't eat when I first wake up - makes me completely nauseaus. (Something to do with 3 kids later I'm sure)  On work days I usually take a sandwich baggie of whole grain cheerios with me but don't get around to eating it until 8 or 9 ish - well after the 5 am run.  I do usually have a hot chai tea right after which I make with a cup of milk so it has about 200 calories.

I haven't done spinning, but either spinning or an exercise bike should be good.  Most spin classes are intervals with a lot of really hard out-of-the-saddle pumping and a bit of recovery.  They can be entertaining, but will also kick your butt if you're not ready to keep up.  A 45 minute spin class goes a lot faster than 45 minutes of constant speed pedaling.

I'm just getting back on my bike/trainer, so have mostly done steady effort with a reasonably high cadence (85-100 rpm).

One think that I noticed when I tried to start going to the gym is that a 30 min run on a treadmill my distance was around 2.5miles, when I know that I can do a 5K (3.1miles) in less than 30 minutes.
this got me little disappointed with going to the gym.
is it normal? does everyone runs slower when using the machine or just me? if I use more speed to make 10min/mile, I cannot run the whole 30 minutes. I run out of gas much earlier.
the last couple of times I tried I started at 4,5mil/hour and increasing .5mph each 5 minutes
it was something like this

10 min warm up @ 4.0 mph
5 min @ 4.5 mph
5 min @ 5.0 mph
5 min @ 5.5 mph
5 min @ 6 mph
5 min @ 5.5 mph
5 min @ 5.0 mph
5 min cool down @ 3.5 mph

incline was @ 1.7

should I expect to be slower indoor vs real run?
is this slow increase a good way to go?

Hi Everyone, heres some info about myself. My name is Nicole  I am 45 years old, I live in Brooklyn NY with my amazing partner of 12 years and two young kids -ages 3 and 4. I am an artist and love that I get to do what I love doing for a living, I feel extremely lucky. I started training for tri 3 years ago but had a series of overuse injuries my first two years of training and accidentally fractured my ankle too, ack!  I've learned to slow down, listen to my body. I still have some problems with my knees after I run, they can ache. I have a PT who says its a tracking issue and we are working to correct it.

I did the Jersey Man long sprint as a relay and the Mighty Montauk Tri myself in October. I also did my first 10k race a few weeks ago. It was amazing, I felt like I did well (I finished in 55min) but my knees were feeling it after and it took a couple of weeks to recover)

My goals are to do an Oly and a few sprints this year and the New York 1/2 Marathon at the end of March, (that will also be a first). I'm most nervous about the 1/2mary because running longer distances the 4-5 miles right now isn't feeling great. My main goal is to work on strength this winter and stretching in the hopes of getting my knees "back on track". I'm also psyched to get riding. I have a new Cervello and a trainer wrapped up under the Christmas tree and cant wait to try it out.

I'm really glad to be part of this group and come here for motivation and to connect with some people who love this sport as much as I do, I'm just starting off and sometimes wish I had found tri years ago when my body was more forgiving ; )

Its going to be a busy Christmas around here 14 people for dinner tonight so I GTG... will check in after the holiday, have a wonderful happy merry Christmas everyone!

Hey Gmrgirl, do I remember you saying you were a smoker? Are you still smoking? If you smoke first thing in the morning it might be functioning as an appetite suppressant... Im thinking that as you begin to ramp up your training this year, you may begin to feel depleted during your workouts if your going out on an empty stomach, also not eating can effect recovery time for tougher workouts.

egg sandwich on whole grain bread after a work out is good eats, it has great carb/protein balance.

He lives in St. John's apts right across the street from campus. We're down a few times a year. Drop off in Aug, parents weekend in Oct, pick up in May.  We plan to stop by on our way back from the St. Louis marathon in April. Might have to make some surprise visits now as his girlfriend will be attending nursing school in Peoria starting in Jan. Says she's going to be living in the dorm. Yeah right.

I should have him check out Alpha-Phi-Omega. I've been pushing him to get involved in some service organizations although he's pretty busy with classes ( he says this next semester will be killer) and he is a tutor for the university as well.

I love natural peanut butter for some extra protein.  I usually make a snack with a banana sliced...then put natural peanut butter (2 tbs), half of a Boston Creme pie yogurt(Yoplait) and granola with almonds.  I have been eating this every night for the past year....cant get enough of it.
