Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED tdl1972 - 2011-01-10 6:37 PM Great, great stuff so far! After reading through this entire thread I am rethinking some of my goals with an eye toward what is truly behind the initial goals I set for this year. For one, getting back into shape and losing weight has got to be my number one motivator. Yes I want to swim faster, yes I want to be able to finish a 5K again and ultimately complete a triathlon, but behind all of that is my desire to get and be healthy again. I'm gonna put some more thought into this tonight and will let you know what I come up with. Looking forward to your thoughts, David. For me, that's what it's all about: happy, healthy lifestyle. Races just add structure to my training, and HECK - Races are fun!! But I train for all the physical and mental benefits it provides. Racing is a good motivator and the icing on the cake. |

Subject: RE: Dream Chaser's 'Set a Goal and Capture it!' Mentor Group - CLOSED January Assignment Okay everyone. Here is this month's assignment. Many of you may have completed this already, or have half of it done, but I am strong suggesting we ALL have this accomplished by the end of this MONTH! So we have plenty of time between now and January 31st. A.) Book a Destination. Sign up for a Spring/Summer race. Sprint tri, 5k road race, Olympic ... no matter the race or distance you must "Pay" for it in full and add it to your BT Calendar. If you need help picking a race, or adding it to your BT blog, just ask. Also, if you need help picking a Blog Title, think of something that includes that Race title!!! This way you will see it everyday and it will help to keep that destination/goal in front of you constantly. Like they say, Keey your eye on the prize. B.) Get a Road Map to the Destination. In other words, pick and commit to a plan. If you don't have a plan, ask for help. I will help you find/devise one. If your race isn't until late summer, myself and other group members will help you devise a "base bulding plan" to get you to the start date of your plan. That's it. Simple. Book the race: by making the financial commitment it will help motivate you. Picking a plan is a visual road map that will effectively and efficiently have you arriving at your destination in the easiest most prepared manner. |

And 2 now should I just be randomly running biking swimming? Or is there a more organized pre training training? I think it depends on what you hope to accomplish. I tend to go with a longer plan because I want to feel prepared. I also like the detailed workouts so I know what to do in each workout. I don't train with power or a HRM and so try to find plans that are RPE based. And lastly - I chose based on the time investment. I made the mistake one year of choosing a plan that required too many hours and felt really defeated when I couldn't hit the targets of the planned training. You need to be realistic about how much time you'll have to train. With two small kids - that might be a challenge. Also - my goal for my first oly was to finish but there are plans that are based on where you are at in your training (beginner, intermediate etc) and so you may select one based on your time goals. Have fun with the planning! x2 Take into consideration your time commitments first, then look for a plan that fits that. I have a fairly aggressive 10-12 hour per week training plan that I know for sure I'm not going to always meet, but I'm ready for that. Many of the free training plans on BT don't have detailed workouts, which is OK but I'd rather have the detail (which is one of the reasons I'm a Silver member). It's also OK to take one and modify it to your needs. I also like the longer plans because they really prepare you and if life intervenes for a few days you don't lose 10% of your race prep. Once you decide on a training plan, focus on what you need to do to be ready to start that plan. Unless you're doing a "Couch to" program, the plan is going to assume a certain level of fitness. My plan assumes I could complete an Olympic distance race to start, so I've been using the off-season to prepare for that level of training. Unfortunately the last 5-6 weeks have been a mess for me workout-wise so I'm a bit behind where I want to me. Off-season workouts are often used for:
My Nov - Feb plan was to do 3, 4, and 5, then start my official BT plan mid-Feb. Another thing to consider when choosing a plan is how structured you'd like the training to be. Some plans follow the same schedule week after week (i.e. long run Monday, swim/bike brick Tuesday, etc.) while some (including mine) don't have any particular pattern. Let us know what you decide and make sure you log your workouts! Some real good advice from Mike and Marcia for determining a plan. Up until now, I've just sorta winged it with pretty inconsistent results. I'm currently through 2 weeks of a 12 week plan so the sample is real small, but.....What I've found so far is that having a structure laid out keeps me honest. I went away last week and was unable to complete a couple of the runs. Now in the past, i would have just skipped them but having them sitting there staring at me, I made sure I worked them back in. Like Kimmax I don't train w/power or HRM so I focus on RPE. I'm not really concerned with great detail but with a basic roadmap to get me where i'm trying to go, you know for me, i try and KISS. I know this doesn't really answer your question but I guess what I'm trying to say is what I'm finding is that a plan is pretty important and I wish I had committed to one sooner. |

Also - my goal for my first oly was to finish but there are plans that are based on where you are at in your training (beginner, intermediate etc) and so you may select one based on your time goals. Have fun with the planning! This is good advice. You need to be honest with yourself and determine where you are at physically and mentally (and where you want to be). Then, look at several plans and determine which plan fits best for you. It then becomes a game of trial and error. I think another important aspect is to keep things flexible. For example, I follow the beIRONfit 30 week competitive plan. I will NOT be chasing down the pros in Lake Placid! I am not a front of the pack racer in larger competitive events, however, I like to keep in mind what I could/should be doing if I want to experience a quantum leap in my racing/training. I set up my weekly plan based on my overall schedule for any particular week, but I go in knowing that I will not likely complete the schedule, and I am okay with this. Sometimes I finish my plan, but if I do not, I try to highlight what I believe to be the key training sessions in any given week. For me, balance is key. If I run into conflicts between family time, family events and my training, my training will often get pinched. I use to beat myself up for not finishing every weekly training plan. It took me a while to realize that I do not have 25 hours a week to train. Things are too busy. Therefore, you need to stay flexible. Maybe you have to skip a ride or move it to another day. Maybe you can only run for 45 minutes and not the 90 that your plan calls for. I am sure that others are much more rigid in their training than I am. I tend to shoot from the hip and get done what I can when I can, and that often means staying flexible and creative. I would start with the plans on BT and if you do not find something that works for you, modify it to fit your lifestyle/racing goals. Just my $0.02. |

I would still train even if I was not racing, but having a race, paid for and on the calendar, raises the bar a bit. It can certainly add a bit of stress, but this is good stress. It causes you to plan, focus and execute. The training is the journey and that is a lot of fun! The race is just the culmination of that journey. |

Picking a plan is a visual road map that will effectively and efficiently have you arriving at your destination in the easiest most prepared manner. BAAAAAHHH! Here we go - pushing me outside my comfort boundaries! I'm really funny about this stuff. Mentally I commit but I am too afraid to say it out loud - even to hubby - so here goes! Goal #1: I WILL ride a century ride on June 13th if not sooner. There are two options and it will completely depend on how I feel about option #1. There is a cycling network here in Toronto that has a ride to Tottenham on June 5th and I've joined the network but have never ridden with this group. In spring I will try it out - riding with a pack etc - and if good - I WILL ride the Tottenham Trailblazer 100 mile ride. If I feel completely uncomfortable with this group I will do a more organized ride called the 'Tour de Grande'. Unfortunately neither are listed here on BT. To prepare I have uploaded the bike plan for a beginner iron plan. Training starts Jan 22. I figure if I put in the time prescribed it should get me there but I may actually follow Jorge's cycling plan re: actual training details to improve my cycling ability. Confusing? Absolutely. So for example if the iron plan calls for a 1 hr easy spin in the small ring - I might substitute this for a workout in Jorge's plan re: intervals. I confess I have no clue what I'm doing but figure if my body accepts the punishment all should be good. I'm thinking it all comes down to my T.I.T.S. (I just learned this acronym "time in the saddle" and try to squeeze it in whenever I can!). Goal #2: I will RACE the Cobourg Olympic triathlon on August 13th. I did this triathlon last year but the goal was to just complete it. I find I never really 'race' anything but rather am a smiling participant. I will race it this year - give it everything I have in the engine. I'm hoping all the cycling I do will prepare me for the challenging Northumberland Hills! To prepare for this I have decided to follow a HIM plan vs. the olympic plan I did last year. The goal being to keep my cycling distance up and I think I won't squeek by with this plan but rather should be well prepared for it. There are a couple of other things I'm tossing around but these two are definitely my "A" goals. Right now I'm focussed on trying to get in to a good cycling and weight routine. It will all go downhill when I join hubby in Germany for a couple of weeks but I will get back to all three sports when I get back. Can't wait! Looking forward to reading everyone else's plans!! Mentor Group - CLOSED Havajava - 2011-01-11 3:43 PM A NYC triathlon aug 7.B I need some major help choosing a plan for now!! Help guys! That's an Olympic distance triathlon. What are your overall goals for that race (i.e. to finish, MOP, podium) and what is your current fitness level? Do you have any specific limiters you would like to address (it sounded like running is the problem right now)? August 7th is roughly 30ish weeks away, which gives you plenty of time. You might want to look at a 12-week basic Sprint program, do a smaller race of some sort (there are generally lots of "tri it out" type races in the spring), and then hit a 16-week basic Olympic plan. It's tough to maintain a 30-week plan without any intermediate goals (we'll help you, though!!). Since running is tough for you right now, maybe look into a run/walk routine or something. |

I was looking through the sprint workouts on this site and in some books I have and is it ok to combine two prog? Bc the one on this site just gives u mins and no real direction? Sure. It is okay to modify any plan so that it works for you. Some folks are okay with just knowing that you need to run for 30 minutes at a RPE of 6. Others need to know that they are suppose to run 3.5 miles at Z2 throughout. It really comes down to what you think might work for you. I am an analytical guy and race with a HR monitor. Therefore, I like things to be a bit more specific. However, if you look at my logs, you will note that I am not going crazy with the details. You do not see me uploading my garmin to show what my time is by mile. I say have at it and use multiple plans, if necessary, to come up with what works for you. |

The basic plans on the site don't have anything but minutes, but the "pay for" plans have much more detailed workouts. You get the plans for "free" by becoming a Silver member, which I did because 1) I wanted to support the site that has given me invaluable information, and 2) I liked the detailed plans and being able to import them into my planned log. I kind of make up my training plan last year where I would do 2x/week for each discipline, one short and one long, and about once or twice a month I'd throw in some intervals and some strength training. I almost always did bricks because of my schedule. It worked for me, but this year I'm going to be much more focused and detail-oriented with my training and see the difference in results (I hope!). |
