I checked out the video from that news report and it just blew me away with the descriptions. And then I found these pics on Jon (wstchstrtriathlete's) blog. This is the Run and Bike Course!!! No biggie! that thing that looks like a washed out road is just a pot hole to the people who fix the roads in essex county. They'll just throw in a dump truck or two of "pot hole patch", drive over it a few times and call it good! On a serious note there is a link over on ST for those that want to donate a couple bucks to towns that got crushed by the flooding.

Extreme Veteran 828 North Shore, MA. | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Jeremy, I actually emailed a local cyclist group and heard back from them this am. They said the course IS rideable and by the beginning of Oct it will be in even better shape. I plan on going third w/e in Oct to do a loop and run - just booked my hotel room not 15 mins ago having heard the roads will be passable. What date are you planning on going up? |

Thanks for the heads up. I missed the broadcast last time and I really want to see it. Granted mainly to see if I'm in it at all. I managed to sneak my way into last years(cheering at the side of the road as the lead males went through town at the end of the first loop of the bike). |

Its going very well all things considered. Doing Physical Therapy two times a week. My therapist is pushing me pretty hard, the sessions are amazingly hard but I can feel a lot of strength returning to the knee already(and working on some other things that I need help with at the same time.) Got back into the pool last week and hoping to make it at least 3 times this week then hopefully settling into a good schedule(goal is to swim 5 times a week until I can start running again). I'm on a stationary bike during physical therapy but don't have the clear yet to use my trainer or ride a real bike, hopefully in a week or so I'll be ok enough to ride a real bike, I really want to get out a few more times while the weather is still nice. I'm hoping to be running again by Thanksgiving(3 month point) but we'll have to see. |

Extreme Veteran 567 Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Has anyone started to look at races for next year to prep them for LP? It seems like some people in the past have used Tupper Lake Tinman as there warm up. I was curious as to what others were thinking for warm up races. |

Member 206 East Syracuse, New York | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I think I'm going to do Tupper. From what everyone says its well run, the timing is about right...could also tie it into a trip to placid to ride a loop, and I like the idea that its an independent event too. Wanted to do it this year but my daughter was graduating from highschool that weekend and "The Mrs." wasnt thrilled with the idea of me not being there. |

Were you injury from overtraining – I missed why you had to go under the knife?
Since Placid I have done nothing (PT then surgeons orders). No operations required but I still have 6 more weeks rest before I can start doing anything again. They are calling it chronic tendinitis of the patella ligament and hamstring. Plus I buggered up my siatic (read psychotic) nerve. People are ramping up for the NYC marathon, I`m sitting drinking beers watching the Rugby World Cup. May go runBostonin April for charity although it is 3 months before Placid.
Regarding HIM warm ups – Rev 3 in CT. Agree with what everyone said. It is tough and at the perfect time (about 8 weeks before Placid). |

Extreme Veteran 422 Somewhere, British Columbia | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread Well for me, after discussing a lot with my coach, it is gonna be an early preparation and a late preparation. Oceanside 70.3 and Mt Tremblant 70.3. I was kind of worried about Mt Tremblant because it's gonna be close to Lake Placid but he told me that it is what he is used to be with his other athletes and, based on their results, I can trust him... So we'll see... |

Extreme Veteran 678 Rome, NY | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread I have a question to raise. What does everyone feel the importance of doing a 1/2 IM prior to Placid is for? Working Nutrition? Test fitness? Test equipment? Or get out the jitters? As I look at the 1/2 IM avaliable that are in NY prior to IM Placid. I see doing a 1/2 IM as a wasted training weekend that I could be at Placid on the course. Any Thoughts? Just trying to determine what I should do. |

Veteran 148 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread For me it is a bit of all of it.
I want to validate my training in a race environment - am I wear I think I am. I want to fiddle with setup, wetsuit, transitions and build this into 'muscle memory' so I have one less thing to worry about. Lastly, I will need to burn some nervous energy, some related to the above, some not. I think without the races ahead of time, I might overtrain. A race slows me down a bit. |

Just trying to determine what I should do. YES to all your questions. Racing creates conditions that you can't simulate in training. Of course, if you're a race veteran, then it's less important. I've done Tupper Lake a few times - definitely a good choice. Just a matter of whether it fits in your training schedule or not. |

I'll probably do Bassman in NJ but it's not a hilly course. Check out JerseyMan in Clinton around the 3rd weekend in May. It is a fairly challenging bike and run course and I thought it was a good tune up. |

Except that it being a wasted weekend. My personal view is that there is no better training than racing. Most people respond differently under race conditions and its vital to have the experience. Losing one 80-100 mile ride and doing HIM is a very good trade IMHO.
blackchr05 - 2011-09-22 9:45 AM John Were you injury from overtraining – I missed why you had to go under the knife? Last winter(12/30/10) I tore my right ACL skiing. Long story short I was going down on of the double black mogul runs at Stratton Mountain in Vermont and decided to try and show off. Ended up getting out of control and my ski bindings didn't release. Granted its my fault the bindings didn't release since I ski with them cranked up probably higher than I should. After talking with my doctor(a former top AGer triathlete himself) we decided to hold off on the surgery so I could continue to train for IMLP all summer. The injury didn't have too much of an impact in my training other than reducing the intensity/volume of the running work I was doing all summer(averaged under 20 miles/week where my plan called for 30-40ish). Even knowing now what happened to me at IMLP I'm still glad I decided to hold off on the surgery and do the race. I learned a lot about myself and my body this summer and I can't wait to get back there next year. Really the thing that gets me the most is that I ended up missing almost the entire winter season last year(which is a shame considering how much snow we had here in the north east) and it looks like I'm going to miss the majority of this one. I've been told that I might be able to get back on my skis/snowboard sometime in February. |

Regular 124 | Subject: RE: Ironman Lake Placid : Official Thread John, Sounds like you got a lucky "break" being able to avoid surgery pre IMLP 2011. Can not remember what you time was but completing with less than perfect training is awesome. You`ll destroy Rt86 in 2012. Its funny, i bought a new snowboard in Dec `09 but did not use it all last winter (2010/11) - why - cause i was paranoid tha i`d break something and not be able to do IMLP a few months ago. I promised my fiance that we would hit the slopes this year, so i may see you on the slopes of VT or NY, before i see you in Placid next year.... TriGuy - I totally agree with the feedback. Doing on HIM before the big day is important (in my opinion). I do not think you loose a big training day. I looked on Rev3 last year as a big training day. Jerseyman and Rev 3 are 8-12 weeks per IMLP so you have plenty of weekends to get big rides in. Come HIM time you will be fit and you`ll learn a lot about how fit you are under race conditions. Just trying to determine what I should do. I won't do a HIM first. Personal preference. I'd rather spend a weekend up in LP training on the course than a weekend doing a HIM. A lot of recovery time in the HIM. So don't feel like you have to! |
