For our preview workout, we can park in the large lot near the harbor - the one with the entrance through the tunnel under the railroad tracks.

It will be interesting to see how they will handle the separate transition areas.  Honu was like that.  T1 should basically be the same, although I heard we'll have unique spots instead of having to rack within a range of bib numbers.  We'll just have to figure out how they're going to handle T2 and run gear.  At Honu, they had bike catchers that racked bikes for us.  We just had to run to the rows of gear bags (IM style) to pick up our run stuff.  At Honu, they bring the swim gear back and drop it off near the finish.  If this is the case, we'll probably have to stuff our swim gear back in our bike gear bag in T1 to be sure we get it all back.

Gonna be a PITA, no wetsuits in Honu.  I did the stuff the wettie in the bag drill for LA Tri once, but they let us bring our own bags.   They'd have to give us pretty big bags to put the wetsuit in.  Also have to deal with morning clothes, etc.  Might just be easier to walk/bike back to T1 (i am staying close to T1).

How is check-in on Friday, really busy, PITA, etc?  I was thinking about Thursday if Friday was too busy?

It can be busy first thing in the morning on Friday.  After the early rush, it's really not that bad.  I would expect it's worse in the evenings, but I've always gone during the day on Fri.  It's much easier if you're an annual USAT member and don't have to deal with the one-day license line.  Once you get inside, it moves pretty fast.  It will be interesting to see how they handle the course "talk".  IIRC, the last 3 years it has been the same repeating video with Huddle & Frey explaining the course.

How is training coming for everyone?  Looks like rain in So Cal tomorrow, so it's either trainer or ride on Sunday.  Maybe swim/run tomorrow......

I'm starting to get a little excited about this race. Pretty set on where I am with the run and the swim - - I need to get some more miles (and hills) going on the bike.

Hmmm, sounds like on race morning we have to go first to T2 to drop off run gear THEN go back to T1.  Forcing 2K people to ride in the dark along Oceanside streets and/or on the strand with their swim/bike gear?   Not  very good setup unless they offer Friday run gear drop off........

I was thinking the same thing. I guess there is a reason that transition is going to open at 4:30. Interested to see if we can use our own bags or if we have to stuff swim gear in a plastic bag provided by the race.

Training has been pretty nonexistent lately.  Was doing well with run-focused training, but then holidays and two weeks with bronchitis set me back a little bit.  Carlsbad Marathon Sunday.  Ugh.  Hoping the rain blows through Saturday - although it might be fun to run in the rain?  Will get back to swimming and biking after this weekend.  The Oside (and St. George) Real Course Video for the CT arrived today!

re: Race day logistics: I didn't see where the parking would be this year, but I've parked near the new T2 every year.  If that's still an option, then the only change (for me) would be dropping off bags before riding over to the Harbor.  But, yeah...if you're staying over by the harbor then you have to go out of your way to drop off run bags - I could see how that would be a PITA.  And if they're using some or most of the lots at Cleveland for T2, that will minimize parking, so I don't know what the best option would be.  Oh well, I guess all we can do is train and worry about the race morning issues once we get some direction at the expo.

Training is going pretty well for me.  I've started kicking into the longer stuff.  Only problem is I've been stuck inside for most of the time.  We just got dumped on with another 7 inches of snow last night and this morning (lower back is getting strong from the shoveling).  Looking forward to getting out to the west coast and some warm weather for the race.

My preparedness sounds like a mirror to this.  It is running season and so my legs are set for pounding the pavement, and I am right where I should be in the pool (having just finished IM AZ - endurance is fine!).  Just got back on the bike today after a few weeks of spin-bike only.  Having 10 weeks to go to get some hill training in before the race is a blessing in disguise!

ChrisM

How is training coming for everyone?

Going ok for me, need to work a little harder.  The wind out here has been a killer over the last week.

Here is a pic from my ride this morning, I live a few miles away from Joshua Tree National Park.

Beautiful, brings back memories, some of them painful.  One of our big IMAZ training days was a February ride from Joshua Tree into the park, down to the south end and back.

Maybe I'm over thinking this, but does anyone else think it's going to be really crowded at the North end of The Strand?

Looks like from Breakwater Way to Surfrider we will have Bike (one direction) and Run (two directions) traffic, along with two aid stations.  I've only done the race once, but I can't imagine them squeezing bike traffic in there with the runners.

Yeah that is going to be crowded. And that left onto the strand is going to be tight. Btw confirmed that it's race day morning run bag dropout only. That sucks

It feels like I'm spending more time training indoors this year as well.  It hasn't really been cold, but I don't feel like dealing with the dark mornings.  Riding indoors gives me a little extra time to sleep anyway.  10 hours on the rollers so far this month.

I think last year this time I had already put in a handful of open water swims.  I hope to start that back up in February.  I'm feeling a bit like a water temp weenie and know that the harbor is going to be cold.  My pool sessions are going great though.  I want a 30 minute swim and may be on track as long as I hold a good line during the race.

My run is solid.  Just working to make it faster and faster off the bike.

I'm getting excited.  Trainings going ok.  Broken toe is 3 weeks in and I think one more to go and I can run again!  I needed to up my swimming which I have done.  Lots of drills on the bike trainer but I really need to get those long rides in and hills or I am big trouble!

Hope all is well for everyone's training!

Any thoughts as to a course preview ride day, and to check out the new run course?  March 3? 10?

Wow, time is flying by.  I am sick and tired of the wind out here.

I am in for a course ride on the 3rd if there are any other takers.
