Master 2287 Calgary, Alberta | Subject: RE: TEAM CANADA! jeubank - 2005-11-29 9:01 PM YAHOO!! This is as good as being adopted by a Canadian!! Do you think I could apply for a passport now? The Liberals, Conservatives, and NDP would probably expedite your passport if you promised them a vote! Note I didn't include the Bloc as why would they want to help someone become a Canadian. |

Expert 640 Montreal | Subject: RE: TEAM CANADA! Clarification required. Your total get thrown out? Last time the high and low were tossed. For example if you swam 50% more that your plege your percent was 150%. I am under the impression that your max is now 100% even if you swim more. But were is the incentive for you to meet or surpass your goal if 100% gets tossed |

Extreme Veteran 371 Montreal | Subject: RE: TEAM CANADA! I guess the point is that we don't want people setting a low goal that they KNOW they will reach, and therefore meeting the objective. This new approach forces people to be careful when setting the goal. Although its odd that you have to stop once you reach your goal, its the best way to prevent from setting objectives too low. |

Master 1320 Chilliwack, BC | Subject: RE: TEAM CANADA! December Swim Challenges Rules & Terms If your 2006 Calendar includes a Spring triathlon, now is the time to resume and/or kickstart your swim fitness training. Rules/Guidelines This is a challenge to promote the attainment of a specific swim distance goal. Any distance over goal (over 100%) will be tossed out for the purposes of calculating the winning team. Align yourself with a team. We are lining up regional teams for this challenge but if you find yourself a Challenge Orphan, PM a team captain and ask to join their team or just declare your allegiance. We're not formal about joining a team. Please publicly announce so that you are put on the roster. Team members calculate and pledge their swim distance goal for the month of December. Races and open water swimming applies toward the count. "Swimming distance" includes distance from kick board, paddles and/or fin drills. Open water swims must be measured by a GPS type of device, objective measuring system, or by a sponsoring swim race. Team members need to report their goal to their Team Captain by November 30. Team Captain must report their goals to Renee (playing dual role of (Winning) Team Florida Force Captain and Challenge Administrator) by end of day November 30. Each team will pick a Captain (or you may self-declare) and the Captain is responsible for collecting the weekly swim distance totals from their team members, and reporting said distances to Renee. Final numbers will be independently audited and verified by Pricewaterhousecoopers or, in the event of their slacking, by me. Participants must blog their swim training. If it's not blogged, it didn't happen for the purposes of this Challenge. Reporting week begins Monday and ends Sunday. Captains, please report weekly numbers by Monday morning to Renee. Please use my email account [email protected] to report your team weekly totals (PM fills up too quickly). Determining Winning Team(s) Calculations for determining winning team will be done a little different than in the past. It will be a combination of % of team members who reached their goal + final percentage of aggregrate team goal attainment. In this way, both individual goal attainment and team effort both carry weight. It also levels the playing field (for teams with fewer team members). It will work like this: Calculate the percentage of team members who reached their goal. Calculate the aggregrate team goal attainment average (throwing out anything over 100%). Average these 2 numbers. The team with the highest average of these two numbers wins. Terms for Losing Teams As much as I enjoyed all the spanky-butt avatars after the girls whooped the boys in the Original Swim Challenge, this non-gender-specific challenge does not offer the same kind of enticements. Besides, we’ve already done that, we need to do something more clever, original, humiliating, witty. So, the terms are still somewhat open but the gist of the terms are: Losing team members must change their avatar from January 1 to January 31 to an avatar that must be agreed upon by all captains before this challenge commences on December 1. Losing team members must include an homage to the winning team in their signature line, precise working to be agreed upon by all captains before this challenge commences on December 1. Feel free to contribute your ideas on the avatar and signature line homage. Other Legally Binding Stuff: Smack talking is not mandatory but certainly makes things a little more interesting. Please don't take the smack talking personal. If you find yourself feeling like you've been slighted, have a cookie then post a zippy comeback or just say something like "You're a booger head!" You'll get cheers for being a good sport. As with all challenges, this is an honor system, self-reporting challenge. The ultimate goal is for you to meet your goal. That’s what it’s all about. That, and a little smack talking. Have a cookie? |

For me, I know I want to make 1500 Meters a week. Hence the 5000meters knowing that I will hit the pool 8 times this month. 4-500 meter work outs and 4-1000 meter workouts.. Lethbridge, Alberta | Subject: RE: TEAM CANADA! We may want to check on that rule. The way I read it was that only the distance over 100% would be thrown out, not that the entire effort by that person wouldn't be counted. The point, as I understood it, was simply to prevent any scoring benifit from going over a low goal, not to impose a penalty for it. I may have misunderstood, but we should check. BTW: I do think your interpretation is interesting and might be a good way to do it but I don't think that was what Renee intended. Edited by Micawber 2005-11-30 11:00 AM |

At the very least, I'll go 100k, and be around 70%. Chris: 45k is awesome! And it should put you ahead of the pack off the swim. For me, that isn't good enough - 8th and 9th place might be decided by 0.02s. so I have to do 130k to ensure I'm 0.02s faster. peace |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: TEAM CANADA! Rules clarification: No one's goal % will be entirely thrown out. Anything OVER 100% will not be counted for the purposes of averaging the team's goal attainment. If an individual's % of goal attainment is 110%, only 100% will be used to calculate team average. |

Lethbridge, Alberta | Subject: RE: TEAM CANADA! Just a note for any of you tracking our progress: I hope to reach my goal by the 22nd since I'm not counting on access to a pool after that. I intend to go twice a week until then, that's 7 times, and plan to average close to 1500m per visit. I could do longer swims, or go more often, but I really want to spend the energy on my running instead right now. I think getting out that regularly, especially this coming month, will be the challenge for me, so please feel free to poke me if it's not happening. Thanks in advance for any abuse (or inspiration). Edit: cross-posted with Renee. I'll be in a heated pool. No polar bear club for me! Edited by Micawber 2005-11-30 4:11 PM |

Lethbridge, Alberta | Subject: RE: TEAM CANADA! Borrowed from: 8 Helpful Hints For Swimmers, by J.R. Jarosh on the Jacksonport Polar Bear Club website at http://www.doorbell.net/pbc/ Protective footwear * Wear something on your feet, i.e., old tennis shoes or "aqua socks," etc. to prevent cuts on your feet from the ice and to prevent your feet from sticking to the snow and ice on shore. Warm boots after swim * Have warm/dry boots or shoes to put on once you get out of the lake. This is an important point — once your feet get cold, your entire body will want to go on strike. Not good for a long walk back to your car. Blanket to sit on * Bring an old blanket or towel to put down on the icy shoreline to sit down on and change before/after the swim. I learned this the hard way after my swimming suit froze to the ground with me in it! ... |
