Master 2538 Albuquerque | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED I still don't have my races decided yet (most of the ones here don't post up their dates for a bit). And since my mom is moving to California, I might switch up a race and do something out that way to go see her. But I have some general goals for 2012: Beat my oly time of 4:00:34 this past year Complete a half marathon Maintain weight of 190 or less for the first half of the year |

This is actually a fantastic point. In my experience, consistency is the key to getting faster. What this means is swimming, biking and running in a sustainable way day after day. Getting faster is not about a 12 or 20 week plan or key speed sessions, its just about getting it done. Right now I'm in the middle of 12 weeks of base (all aerobic biking and running). At the end of February I'll start building for IMTX. In any given year, I'll spend about 20 weeks in base, building (and re-building) the aerobic engine. For me. doing aerobic base work is the best way to stay injury free and stay consistent.
Variability of training intensities provide the greatest adaptations over time. All year round. never use winter as an excuse to not do a harder bit of work from time to time. The notion that spending prolonged periods of time at a single specific intensity is beneficial only is true to a point. Once that point is reached, additional stimulus is required to make improvements. Winter is not an excuse to go slow if you want to be fast. |

Member 117 Boulder, Colorado | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Jeremy - I'll have to check out that sprint. Cooperstown isn't too far away from me. I'm in the Saratoga area. I've heard about the issues HITS had last year, and I'm curious to see how it goes this year. Fortunately, I am NOT a front-of-the-pack racer, so I'm not too concerned with losing a minute here or there. I just want to go out and have some fun and finish it this time around. I plan on doing IMLP in 2013, which I KNOW is really well run, so that will be great. The other thing that might help with the HITS IM is that it's the second year and my race is later in their series, so hopefully they will have worked out most of the kinks. I'll be sure to report back. But honestly, it's my first IM, so I wouldn't know any better anyway. |

I know some guys who bought the discounted entry into the half in Corpus Christi. I'll tell you what their feedback is. |

Regular 1777 Auckland, North Island | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED G'day all, Not that I'm looking to encourage any trans hemisphere jealousy, but last night was 1000m open water swim night, as part of a local beach series run every Tuesday through the summer. It's the last one till the end of January tho, which is a bit disappointed, I still have a lot to learn about swimming in the open water... I've got a few goals for the year, 1. Get, and stay injury free 2. Get, and keep my weight below 90kg 3. Consistent training to build a nice big base, the first goal is 10 hours/week, aiming for 12-15 by the end of the year. 4. Finish my first HIM 5. Break 2 hours in the HM. (Both goal 4 and 5 are unfinished business from 2011) |

I know many people (including myself) make training more complicated than it is but when do you know you have rached that point and you should add more intensity? Should it be added from the start? |

For 2012 my main goal is balance. I'm taking some time off from serious racing this year and want to work on my strength and lose the 15lbs I regained in the last year. I'm planning to focus on running and swimming. I was able to go 1:25 at IMAZ on only 1-2 swims a week so I want to focus on getting faster in the pool and get that time down the next time I do an IM. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Goasl for me, 2012. Recover from Shoulder surgery in January and stay injury free all year. 2011 was really my first year in this sport, so I have a lot of PR's to beat. 5k - Sub 20 min (best was 21:28, and that was run portion of a sprint Tri.) Complete Olympic - Not sure on time yet. I'd love to say 2:30, but depends on the course etc. Swim a lot more. I barely swam last year, and somehow survived. not fast, but survived. Form needs work Complete HIM, and would really like a 5:45 or better. Sub 1:35 at Hartford HM in October. |

Expert 1121 | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED Was all over CT this morning with appointments. On the way back, stopped home to grab a quick bite, which turned into going for a quick 60 minute mountain bike ride. Love those trails this time of year. If you can ride Pachaug State Forest, you can ride many places. So rocky, but fun. 9 mile loop feels like 25-30 on the road. Quick shower, and came into the office. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED OK so understand first that after trauma is over, my family has kind of a sick sense of humor ... So my brother just about cut off the top of one of his fingers today working at home. Traumatic for sure, and I was worried like all crazy. Doctors suggested surgery, but he doesn't have insurance since he has been out of work for awhile (he works construction). They sewed it up, but the bone is still broken. So after awhile when he was able to joke again, I offered to stop by and insert this tonight to fix the broken bone and hold everything together ... I don't know that I'll be adding Aero Bars or not. Although I have plans for one HIM, prob each year, I am thinking for now Sprint and Olympic distance will be my thing. That is until I can get a nice Tri bike. |

Master 1832 Elgin, IL | Subject: RE: kaburns1214 Mentor Group 2012 - CLOSED I blew out my ACL playing ice hockey years ago (those Michigan woman were BRUTAL). The put a biodegradable screw in by my IT band to hold the ACL on one side then they screwed down into the tibia on the inside of the knee the hold the other side (I had a hamstring graft). The biodegradable screw had to be taken out 6 months later cuz it was backing itself out and literally rubbing on the IT band, so they took them both out. I keep my hardware, LOL NASTY looking! AND it cost hundred ... I could've picked one up from Home Depot and sterilized. |
