I still don't have my races decided yet (most of the ones here don't post up their dates for a bit). And since my mom is moving to California, I might switch up a race and do something out that way to go see her.

But I have some general goals for 2012:

Beat my oly time of 4:00:34 this past year

Complete a half marathon

Maintain weight of 190 or less for the first half of the year

I work for ATC endurance and we do a sprint out of Cooperstowns  Memorial Day weekend had over 140 people for our 1st year last year

I'm still super skeptical of HITS.  They have 2 races in Texas and have been running entries at really discounted rates at times.  I'm going to give it a year before I'm on board.

I really want to continue to build a base since I keep reading that with a good base comes faster times.

This is actually a fantastic point.  In my experience, consistency is the key to getting faster.  What this means is swimming, biking and running in a sustainable way day after day.  Getting faster is not about a 12 or 20 week plan or key speed sessions, its just about getting it done.

Right now I'm in the middle of 12 weeks of base (all aerobic biking and running).  At the end of February I'll start building for IMTX.  In any given year, I'll spend about 20 weeks in base, building (and re-building) the aerobic engine.  For me. doing aerobic base work is the best way to stay injury free and stay consistent.

Variability of training intensities provide the greatest adaptations over time. All year round. never use winter as an excuse to not do a harder bit of work from time to time. The notion that spending prolonged periods of time at a single specific intensity is beneficial only is true to a point. Once that point is reached, additional stimulus is required to make improvements.

Winter is not an excuse to go slow if you want to be fast.

HITS had a few issues at their first race in Palm Springs:

It'll be interesting to see how they pull things together over the next few races.

Jeremy - I'll have to check out that sprint.  Cooperstown isn't too far away from me.  I'm in the Saratoga area.

I've heard about the issues HITS had last year, and I'm curious to see how it goes this year.  Fortunately, I am NOT a front-of-the-pack racer, so I'm not too concerned with losing a minute here or there.  I just want to go out and have some fun and finish it this time around.  I plan on doing IMLP in 2013, which I KNOW is really well run, so that will be great.  The other thing that might help with the HITS IM is that it's the second year and my race is later in their series, so hopefully they will have worked out most of the kinks.  I'll be sure to report back.  But honestly, it's my first IM, so I wouldn't know any better anyway. Smile

Yeah.  I know some guys who bought the discounted entry into the half in Corpus Christi.  I'll tell you what their feedback is.

Getting Ready For IM Lake Placid Starting Fink's Iron Fit 30 week plan on Dec. 26th any thoughts?

Has anyone used it? Did you feel race ready?

What other plans have people used?

In 2000 I put together my own plan and went sub 11 at IM Florida but I don't know if I was lucky, stupid, or just young

Doing IMLP last year, I was working with a coach.  If you're interested, PM me your e-mail address and I'll send you my plan from last winter/spring before IMLP.

G'day all,

Not that I'm looking to encourage any trans hemisphere jealousy, but last night was 1000m open water swim night, as part of a local beach series run every Tuesday through the summer. It's the last one till the end of January tho, which is a bit disappointed, I still have a lot to learn  about swimming in the open water...

I've got a few goals for the year,

1. Get, and stay injury free

2. Get, and keep my weight below 90kg

3. Consistent training to build a nice big base, the first goal is 10 hours/week, aiming for 12-15 by the end of the year.

4. Finish my first HIM

5. Break 2 hours in the HM. (Both goal 4 and 5 are unfinished business from 2011)

I know many people (including myself) make training more complicated than it is but when do you know you have rached that point and you should add more intensity?  Should it be added from the start?

Here's me at the start of Levi's Gran Fondo back in October.

For 2012 my main goal is balance. I'm taking some time off from serious racing this year and want to work on my strength and lose the 15lbs I regained in the last year.

I'm planning to focus on running and swimming. I was able to go 1:25 at IMAZ on only 1-2 swims a week so I want to focus on getting faster in the pool and get that time down the next time I do an IM.

I used a coach for my IM but had I not I was planning to use one of the Be Iron Fit plans. I think they are really nicely laid out and make a lot of sense to me.

Goasl for me, 2012.

Recover from Shoulder surgery in January and stay injury free all year.

2011 was really my first year in this sport, so I have a lot of PR's to beat.

5k - Sub 20 min (best was 21:28, and that was run portion of a sprint Tri.)

Complete Olympic - Not sure on time yet.  I'd love to say 2:30, but depends on the course etc.

Swim a lot more.  I barely swam last year, and somehow survived.  not fast, but survived.  Form needs work

Complete HIM, and would really like a 5:45 or better.

Sub 1:35 at Hartford HM in October.

Was all over CT this morning with appointments.  On the way back, stopped home to grab a quick bite, which turned into going for a quick 60 minute mountain bike ride.  Love those trails this time of year.  If you can ride Pachaug State Forest, you can ride many places.  So rocky, but fun.  9 mile loop feels like 25-30 on the road.  Quick shower, and came into the office.

OK, I am just being lazy, but what does 90kg equate to?  If we are going to talk European metrics (LOL) I at least want to understand what you are saying.

OK so understand first that after trauma is over, my family has kind of a sick sense of humor ...

So my brother just about cut off the top of one of his fingers today working at home.  Traumatic for sure, and I was worried like all crazy.  Doctors suggested surgery, but he doesn't have insurance since he has been out of work for awhile (he works construction).  They sewed it up, but the bone is still broken.  So after awhile when he was able to joke again, I offered to stop by and insert this tonight to fix the broken bone and hold everything together ... (this was taken out of my knee a few years ago)

Wow, everyone has such big goals. Like Jeff (rizer), this was my first year in the sport. I think I am going to continue doing sprints and try 1-2 Oly's. Maybe a HIM in 2013??

So Kelly, regarding Fast Splits, what should I be looking for in a bike fit, and what is this going to cost me? I don't know that I'll be adding Aero Bars or not. Although I have plans for one HIM, prob each year, I am thinking for now Sprint and Olympic distance will be my thing. That is until I can get a nice Tri bike.

Haha, I think its more rest of the world, than a European system Wink, but 90kg is about 198lbs

Here is me, approaching the finish of my first tri, last summer.

I blew out my ACL playing ice hockey years ago (those Michigan woman were BRUTAL).  The put a biodegradable screw in by my IT band to hold the ACL on one side then they screwed down into the tibia on the inside of the knee the hold the other side (I had a hamstring graft).  The biodegradable screw had to be taken out 6 months later cuz it was backing itself out and literally rubbing on the IT band, so they took them both out.  I keep my hardware, LOL

NASTY looking!  AND it cost hundred ... I could've picked one up from Home Depot and sterilized.
