Steph, in answer to your question regarding food allergies...yes, I have been seeing an allergist. I've had skin testing done, both the kind where you get pricked and the patch testing.  I've had to keep a food log etc.  I have intolerances to some foods, and allergy to others.  It has been an education figuring out what I can and can't eat, but it's coming along .  And, I've gotten very good at figuring out substitutions for things.

Went for a nice run today.  I've been battling some tendonitis in my ankle for awhile. Took some time off running and am now back up to 5 miles.  Felt great to be outside running with my friends, but bummed that the ankle is a bit sore now. I sometimes feel as though my body must always have some part of it hurt or it's not happy. Hip, knee, ankle....always something.  The chiropractor I'm seeing currently is great and I am making progress, but I tend to be very impatient with injuries.

Happy New Year to Everyone! Smile

Susie

Subject: Spinning!

stephsprint - 2011-12-29 5:37 PM   Nice work...you're on the right track! Rather than a stationary bike, see if you can get into a spin class. A spin bike allows you to stand and get a feeling of climbing etc. If you can't than the stationary bike is OK. I'm so excited to see how you do! You have good running shoes and good running form? Technique is pretty important to gals 'our age' as we injur and wear pretty easily. Cheers!

What is it with you in shape people trying to get me to do spinning.( I have a g/f that loves it, but she is also about 60 lbs lighter than me.)  Do you want to kill me?  LOL  Did you miss the part where I said I was old, fat and out of shape?

But really.. The first time I went on the treadmill I got a blister on both heals.  I went out and bought "running shoes" with the help of the sales persons,  it's much better now.   I have no idea if I have good technique.  Who would even tell me that?   My number one concern is making sure I have a good bra, don't want "the girls" getting hurt.

I'm trying to increase the intensity on the bike and try to increase my miles / per min ratio as time goes on. But I'm just starting. It will probably take a while.  I found the increase of intensity button the the "rolling hills" program on the treadmill. I thought it was the speed button until it started and then I was getting 7% inclines vs the 3% I was getting before. Boy did my calfs and glutes feel that one.  So I did 20 in rolling hills and then 20 min flat where I ran 2 min/ walked 3, then a cool down.  It's going to be slow, but I have till June.   Once the weather warms up I can do this stuff outside.

Cool! When you spin, ignore the lunatic in the front and make sure you are doing YOUR RIDE. You can just spin for the first couple of months, you don't have to do all the nutty stuff. Go to You-Tube and search Chi-Running, teaches you to land mid-foot and relax. I was a clod-hopper for months until I took a chi-clinic. The POSE method is also good. Good bra is KEY... nice work!

It all takes time, and you have the right attitude. Can't wait until 6 months or so pass, to see how well you do!

::sigh:: it is always something isn't it? I have considered trying to find out what my deal is with certain foods. I seem to be happier without wheat or milk. I wish I could find something to put in my coffee that's creamy. Almond milk, creamora and the like, and others are just nasty.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!!

I dont have any resolutions planned for this year.  Two goals I have are to train more consistently and shooting to break the sub 22min 5k.

I will hit the gym tomorrow to get some cycling in and will run on Sunday assuming I am able to function.

Have a happy new years everyone.

Good luck with your running goal. I really need to hit the gym 2 to 3 times a week. Happy New Year!

Wet and drippy out in Washington state also!

It is supposed to be drier tomorrow.  Hope so because I plan on doing my own little 5k tomorrow since I won't be doing the Year to Year 5k.

Anyone planning to do a New Year's run?

Hi there,

Yup...I'm doing the Lowell First Run 5K in Lowell, MA on Sunday. Thank goodness the start isn't until 11:00am! Good luck to all running races this weekend, and happy New Year!

Aside from doing at least one tri and continuing to do at least on 5K race each month (my one successful resolution from 2011), my other resolution is to learn to play the guitar. I also need to learn Danish as I will be moving to Denmark in November 2012....yikes! Gotta get my sprint tri in before the big move....looking at July and September.

Kim

Cool! Denmark! What will you do there?

So this morning was the 8 miler for the ING Marathon training. Left hip pain and right foot pain blah blah blah! This coming weekend we are going to Disney for the marathon weekend. I decided to run the full as we have a long run scheduled that weekend anyway. I'm going to attempt to run 20 and walk the last 6. Not the way I wanted to do my first marathon but we play the hand we're dealt. Many friends are going also, my husband is doing the Goofy Challenge. He'll run the half on saturday and the full on sunday. You get an extra medal for that and he's a bit of a 'bling hoer ' as we say at our house. (I hope I've not offended anyone).

We did our 8 miles, hung out in the parking lot with a few dozen others and had mimosas, bagels, home made yummy bread etc. Then we headed home for a hot tub and a swim. NICE!!

Now it's all about football!!!!!

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Wow! That is a big move.  Have fun with your 5K's this year.

Uau!! That IS a Big Move!! Good Luck, I also liked your idea of running one 5k a month. Sounds fun and keeps you also motivated to do better.

Good Luck

Good Luck at Disney, I always liked that race (never done) but I do have one Pin that someone gave me once. Maybe if I train enough I can do that next year.

Husband is in pretty good shape, one 1/2 and one full in 2 days, that is great.

Good luck for both

Happy New year to all,

not many resolutions, start to run and do some strength train more consistently, buy a new bike (sold mine a few months ago to buy a sidecar for my motorcycle) ad the distance from 5k to 15k.

loose the last 20lbs that are very hard to shave off

I did a 90 min. moderate bike and a moderate 4 mile run today.  Also practiced with the kettle bells a little so I wouldn't forget the form stuff the PT taught me yesterday.  They are awesome strength workouts and quick.  Very intense.Trying for weight loss with more lean muscle.  Want to shave off the 20 pounds I put on for Ironman.

I'm cutting carbs down starting tomorrow...same calorie target, just more protein, veggies and fruit. Back to no white potatoes, bread or rice. My carbs will be more targeted around workouts.   I may try some day fasts too.  Lots of experimenting in the nutrition area.  I also have to up the electrolytes. Trying to avoid those pesky cramps.Hopefully the kettle bells will help strengthen the glutes too which should help with the cramps.

Isn't this fun?  Always something new to learn and to try.

Happy new year!

Really, it's the best part. I love to fiddle with stuff. Fueling workouts while trying to lose weight...tough, but that's my goal too. I'm losing 15 to 20 by my 4/1 Nautica.

Happy 2012 everyone.  The year of the Zombie Apocolypse!  Let's get ourselves fit and in shape and outrun all of the zombies!!!!!!

Seriously though - We have a new year before us with so many possibilities.  Let last year go with any failures you may have had.  Today is the day to start fresh - we can do this.  YOU can do this!  So much of what we do is all about attitude.

For those of you new to BT and mentor groups in general some things I learned from last year's mentor group.  Log, log, log.  Log everything you do running, walking, biking, basketball.  Everything.  You will be amazed when you think you are making no progress to look back a week or a month and see that you are making progress. It really helped me when I was feeling discouraged to see how far I had come.

Look at each other's logs.  Inspire those in your group.  You never know when what you have to say will help someone else through a difficult day. (If your logs are still set to private or friends only you will need to add the mentor group to your friends list or we won't be able to say nice things to you)

Post your questions and concerns here.  There are several in the group who have been doing this for awhile and can at least point you in the direction you need.  If you don't ask they can't answer.

Last - This is a hobby and a lifestyle change.  Enjoy it!!!!!!!!!

Hi Steph et.al.

Thanks for letting me know about your group.  I'd love to hang out with you and make some new friends along the way.  Here's a quick bio

Name:  Enrique

Story:  42 yo, husband, father of 3 young boys (5,7,9).  Live near San Francisco.  Got into triathlons after starting to run consistently in 2007.  I overcame some life-long chronic pain problems when I was 37 years old and decided to regain my health and fitness.  Running led to biking and that led to triathlons.  In 2010 I got the tri bug and did 6 sprint tris. Then in 2011, I did some Oly's plus my first Ironman.  2012 is a "rest" year for me.  I will not do another IM until 2013.  "Rest" though isn't really true as I'll be training very hard (see below).

2012 Races:  My A races are the Folsom Long Course in August which is a Half Iron distance race and the California International Marathon (CIM) in December.  This CIM will be my second attempt at it.  I wasn't able to finish it this last month so I am attempting it again in 2012.  There will be some other smaller events along the way to keep me motivated, but those are my main events.

Other Goals:  Get FAST.  I want to run a 5K in 20:30 (a full minute improvement from today).  And I am going to focus on improving bike speed.  I bought a power meter last month and will be training with it to really maximize my potential on the bike.  I will be doing ZERO swimming until May. Fortunately, my swim speed is "good enough" so I'm not going to focus on that much this year.

Those are the highlights!

Enrique

I started the year with a nice, easy 4 mile.  Am thinking about trying to squeeze in a round of p90x2 later today.  Gotta start the year off on a positive note, right?

Hi All,

Started out 2012 with the stair master and swimming.  My husband and I spent New Year's Eve with our good friends and didn't get to sleep until 2:30 am.  So, very late night plus workout....I think I hear a couch and a warm dog calling me.  Ahhh..nap time here I come.

I hope everyone had a great new years.

What a gorgeous day today. Hard to believe it is January first and nearly 60 out.  It was great day for an outdoor run. Laughing

Patricia,

I know what you mean about spin class... I too have shy'd away as I find it more scary with the crazy person in the front leading the pack. Hooting and hollering like a maniac..you can always hear the leader anywhere in the gym I go to..   No thank you.. but .. maybe .. just maybe .. this year I will give it a go..
