TSimone - 2012-04-03 1:51 PM 60 minute run cut short by an unexpected thunderstorm.  Well, at least unexpected to me.  Embarassed  So far in the 2 years I have been running I have found that dogs and lightening can get me under 7:00/mile pretty quickly.

that made me laugh!!!  Thanks!!!

Wow...this group moves at lightning speed!!!

I was up to about 172 pounds after the holidays, lost a few pounds through January and February down to about 165, but have since taken my weight more seriously as race season approaches.  Down to 157.4 yesterday...which is about what I raced at last year.  Still looking to drop another 5 pounds by June, and 10+ by August though.

This thread does display in mostly white when viewing from IE 7...but displays fine when using IE 9.

Finished up a 1 hour run this morning which I had to force myself to do...really didn't want to get out of bed.  Hard group ride after work.

Wow that's an impressive weight loss. What was the key to your success?

Well...I went from about 159 to 172 in a matter of a month...so it's not like my body was stable at 172.  My body was still familiar at about 160...so getting back there wasn't as hard as someone who's been 170 for 3 years.

For me, even at 157, I'm not ultra lean.  Still about 15% body fat...so it's just about not eating like there's a black hole in my stomach...which I can do at times.  I try to snack more often and keep my main meals smaller, keep the beer intake to a minumum, and just ramp up training in general.

So no secrets or magical keys to success.  Eat less, burn more...try to be reasonable so that your metabolism doesn't go out of whack.

But now that I'm back to my "normal" weight...I'm going to have to work twice as hard to lose any additional weight.

Went for a nice hike this morning.  Moving the body did a lot of good.  I had a short hike the day before as well and the legs are feeling pretty good post race.  traps are a bit sore though.  Bike is all packed up and ready for it's exciting plane ride back to Tucson.  I realized yesterday that I have no idea where I parked in the parking lot.  That will be fun with my luggage and bike.  normally I'd have written it down....

Glad to hear you are feeling good post race.  I was very sore when I woke up this morning, but it seems to be getting better and I will work the legs tonight umpiring.  I hope that works some of the soreness out instead of making it worse.  Tif has a bit of a fever right now so I am making her stay home in bed tonight.

Have a safe trip home and good luck finding the car...do you have an alarm you can make go off and find it that way?

Hey everyone! Sorry that all my info will be a mass paragraph, but I am away from home for the week and only brought along my iPhone! Name: Melissa STORY:  Currently finishing up my 3rd year of medicine at the UofAlberta in Edmonton, AB. Just finished upy general surgery rotation and am now enjoying a week of vacation before starting up 8 weeks of internal med. I am a former competitive swimmer (200back/400IM) and when I stopped swimming I gained a bunch of weight and decided I need to make a change. I started training for triathlon in Jan 2008. I've done a bunch of tris/running races over the past few years. FAMILY STATUS: single. Still living at home with my parents (oh yeahhh) (Figure my debt is high enough through school and triathlon as is! Haha) CURRENT TRAINING: Surgery killed my training over the past 3 weeks, but before that I was around 6/7hrs weekly. I'm working with one of the BT coaches to develop a training schedule that will be sustainable through the next few months- I have 1/4 call for the next little while. Right now the plan is an alternating long bike/long run per week. 2011 RACES:  Pigman Sprint Iowa (2nd AG), IMLP 14:02:24, Subaru Banff Olympic (2nd AG). 2012 RACES: Hollywood Half Marathon (this weekend!), Boulder 70.3. I will do a few more races but I won't be able to register for them until I get my call schedule for medicine/pediatrics. Thinking of doing 2 olys before Boulder and a HM for Canadian Thanksgiving. Ultimately working back up the IM ladder to IM France Nice in June 2013 as a graduation trip/event for myself! WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:  I'm fairly active in this forum and I log my workouts daily. I am quite determined to make this 70.3 happen this summer even with my school schedule and think I will fit in well with the rest of the group. I am excited to contribute to the group and learn more about this sport and the people involved in it! I always have the occasional random question to add in the mix as well!

Ya...that swim at IMLP was something else.... I can't imagine what it probably felt like for people who were already nervous about the swim if they were weaker swimmers. I was a bit panicky being swam over by all the wetsuit people! Lol.

I wasn't able to watch the coverage, but if I had the chance, I likely would have watched as much as possible.

The times that were put up by the pros were just crazy fast.  Multiple guys throwing down sub 2:10 bike splits and following them up with sub 1:15 runs in the heat...that's just crazy.

As far as Lance...I think this race is just a lessoned learned.  I thought he executed his race plan perfectly in Panama (come out of the water with the lead pack, sit on Lieto on the bike, save it for the run and run to his best ability), and to expect him to perform better at Texas was a little unfair.  It's not to say Lance can't improve off his Panama performance...but we all know that we can't have A+ performances all the time.  I also think he will need a tougher bike course to create a bigger gap on the bike.

Fred D - 2012-04-03 6:57 PMThanks.Anyone have any opinions about the pro race at IM 70.3 Texas?I was glued to the coverage and was impressed with the winner.Thought Lance didn't have his best race, or his worst either.Thoughts?
It was a great race with a loaded field. I expected Raelert would win and TO would finish second. Ran past Raelert on our easy run Saturday and he looked solid...would have never known he was fighting illness. So no surprise to hear TO won it. He's been very good on that course the last couple of years, so it was probably only a matter of time. I knew Lance had no prayer when I saw them on the bike course and he didn't have much of a lead at all. Also found it interesting that he was relegated to walking some on the run and that TO wasn't 100% on the run either. I can also say the Lance factor raised the level of spectator involvement...and I was impressed that a large contingency of spectators even hung around for us slow folks to finish.

Sorry a little late to the thread, I appreciate being part of the group!  I was in Fred's group in 2010 and it was a great help leading up to IMFL that year.

NAME: kenj/ Ken Johnson

STORY:I am 47 years old and live in upstate NY in the Finger Lakes region, near Rochester.  In early 2006 I decided I had enough of being overweight.  At the time I weighed about 285 at 5' 8" tall so I was in rough shape.  I played men's league hockey once a week and was struggling to keep up with guys that when I was younger and in better shape I had no problem staying with.  So I decided to do something about the weight and started Nutri-system.  Part of the program included 30 minutes of working out per day.  Didn't matter if it was walking, weights, or whatever got me moving.  For the most part I walked on the treadmill.  By early spring I had lost about 50 pounds so when I was able to move outside I started running some.  By the end of the summer I was down almost 90 pounds, but was struggling with achilles issues running every day so I picked up a bike and started riding some.  Found BT and connected with some local members and started doing some 5k's and thought about tri's.  The wildcard was the swim, but I joined the local masters group  I learned to swim, sort of.

I did my first tri in June of 2007, another in July and decided watching IMLP that year on the net to sign up for 2008.  Probably not the recommended way of getting to that distance, but I downloaded a plan from BT and finished with a respectable time.  Since then I have done several halfs, many more sprints and oly's and another Ironman, IMFL in 2010.

FAMILY STATUS: I am married to Connie, who is not only a great wife, but my biggest cheerleader!  She never questions any of the crazy ideas I come up with and is always there to support me!  I also have two adult children.

CURRENT TRAINING: Currently, due to travel for work and now on vacation, I am on a run focused program for the past few weeks.  I do try and strength train some when I have access to a fitness room and hit the bike hard when I am home.  I did do a lot of Jorge's bike program over the winter and did see some great results in raising my CP.  Unfortunately about 3 weeks ago I did something to my shoulder. The ortho diagnosed it as an impinged bursa and aggravated rotator cuff.  Currently trying to PT it and ice it as much as possible although some days it seems it is really easy to aggravate it.

The lack of swimming is frustrating as I took a series of lessons last summer and hooked up with a group at the Y that focused more on instruction than intervals.  I was making progress and planning on taking some more one on one lessons over April and May.  Hopefully I can get this feeling better and get back in the pool soon!

THIS YEAR'S RACES: In 2011 I focused more on sprints, with the only exception being Musselman half iron distance.  It is a local race that is really well run.  I was planning to run a marathon in October, but some IT band and hamstring issues derailed that.

2012 RACES:  I am planning on 5 or 6 local sprints over the course of the summer, Musselman (doing the double Mussel! Mini Mussel sprint on Saturday and Musselman HIM on Sunday) again in July and the "A" race will be Ironman Florida in November.  During the winter and early spring I will also do some road races from 5k up to a half marathon in April.

WEIGHT LOSS:  I will push to get to a lower race weight in 2012 than I have been in the past.  I think it will help with the bike and run and make my goals more attainable.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:  I am a sponge for knowledge when it comes to this sport.  Love talking about it and learning from people that are faster and more experienced.  I also have a lot of respect for what I have learned in the forums and Fred, plus many of the rest of you have contributed to that.  Additionally, having led my own mentor group for the past few years, I think the concept is great and I think the camaraderie it builds is what has kept many people active in the sport!
